2 Your employer Mackay Hospital and Health Service The Mackay region has been firmly fixed in a long-term cycle of positive growth and is the largest regional economy in Queensland. The region boasts steady population growth and the third largest gross regional product in Queensland, behind Brisbane and the Gold Coast. The region covers Sarina in the south, Clermont in the west, and Bowen and the Whitsunday Islands in the northeast. It services approximately 182,000 people in an area of approximately 90,000km 2. Mackay Hospital and Health Service has eight hospitals, two Multi-Purpose Health Services and two additional community health services that employ more than 2000 staff. The Mackay Base Hospital is the referral hospital for smaller facilities at Bowen, Dysart, Clermont, Collinsville, Moranbah and Sarina. In addition, Proserpine Hospital, (located in the Whitsundays) is a 33 bed facility offering acute, maternity and surgical services. Our staff are passionate about community engagement and delivering outstanding healthcare services to the communities in the MHHS region. To reflect the growing demand for health care in the region, the Mackay Base Hospital has been redeveloped, at a cost of $408 million, which will increase the bed capacity from the current 180 beds to 318 beds. The redeveloped hospital is equipped with leading edge technology to assist staff to provide the highest level of care and comfort to our patients. The hospital provides specialist services in obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, psychiatry, urology and oncology and many other specialty areas. New services implemented in late 2013 include a Cardiac Catheter Laboratory and an MRI scanner. Your opportunity The primary purpose of this position is to provide an entry level position to clinical coding gaining a thorough working knowledge of the Clinical Coding role through work experience as well as formal completion of ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS Coding Course which will then enable the Trainee to gain the skills required to become a Clinical Coder. Your role Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in accordance with QPS and HHS values as outlined above. Understand your broad responsibility for safety and quality in healthcare, actively participate in continuous quality and safety improvement activities within the workplace and notify a relevant clinical or non-clinical responsible officer when concerns exist about workplace or patient safety. The provision of a Healthy and Safe environment within Mackay Hospital and Health Service is everyone s responsibility. Carry out work in accordance with prescribed practices and procedures and in a manner that will not create health and safety hazards for yourself or others in the workplace. Develop a thorough working knowledge of clinical coding under the direction of the Clinical Coder Manager/Auditor and Senior Clinical Coders with the aim of meeting coder competency standards. To work towards coding all medical records to achieve 90% accuracy using the latest classification system in accordance with national standards and state coding guidelines as issued by Queensland Health.

3 To ensure coding targets are met by prioritising work and accepting responsibility for complete, accurate and timely coding with the focus of sustaining continuous quality improvement initiatives. Actively participate in ongoing education and self promotion to ensure up-to-date, sound clinical and coding knowledge is regularly sustained and to participate in approved courses as sponsored by Mackay Hospital and Health Service (MHHS). Contribute to clean data holdings by ensuring key data monitoring activities are undertaken as directed and participate in quality assurance activities. Promote the recording of comprehensive diagnoses and procedures for coding by identifying insufficient documentation and referring this to clinical coders for investigation. Assist clinical coders with the submission of morbidity, cancer and other data to the relevant registries. Promote the coder/clinician relationship and accurate data collection by participating in meetings with multi-disciplinary staff. Promote team work within the Clinical Coding Unit by discussing coding issues with peers and ensure that coding queries/outcomes are accurately appraised and determined. Respond to any other reasonable requests from the Coding Manager/Auditor or the Senior Health Information Manager and Manager Health Information Unit. Mandatory qualifications/professional registration/other requirements There are no mandatory requirements/qualifications for this position, however possession of or working towards Health Information Management Association of Australia (HIMAA) Medical Terminology Course, Introductory Clinical Coding and/or Intermediate Clinical Coding would be highly desirable. Candidates must provide certified copies of requested proof of identify documents for the purposes of general Criminal history and National Police Certificate checks. Licence to Operate Vehicle: This position requires the incumbent to operate a class C motor vehicle and an appropriate licence endorsement to operate this vehicle is required. Proof of this endorsement must be provided prior to the commencement of duty. Hepatitis B Vaccination: Health Care Workers in Queensland Health whose occupation poses a potential risk of exposure to blood or body fluids must be immunised against Hepatitis B according to the National Health and Medical Research Council Australian Immunisation Handbook and the Queensland Health Infection Control Guidelines. Within the context of the responsibilities described above under Your role, the ideal applicant will be someone who can demonstrate the following: Possession of sound/very good knowledge of medical terminology. Demonstrated ability to learn new tasks, undertake tasks requiring high attention to detail while working to strict deadlines within a data management framework. Ability to undertake and successfully complete approved clinical coding courses as sponsored by MHHS. 4 Possession of a high standard of general administrative skills and sound computer skills for data input applications for use with Hospital Based Corporate Information Systems (HBCIS).
