4 LETTERS FROM THE EDITOR S DESK Richard Abowitz Honest reporting in a small town This is an odd editorial, I admit, to place in our Best Of issue. But I had my first meeting with someone irate over JH Weekly. As we were putting together the issue this weekend, a man came into the office. He was dressed casually, clearly kept in good shape and, in general, had a friendly look about him. Turns out he d been mentioned by name in an item in the Mar. 7 Props and Disses, the opinion and commentary column by Jake Nichols. The item was a Diss. There was also an unflattering reader comment on the issue printed. Unsurprisingly, he wasn t pleased. Except for the occasional outraged response to a column by Aaron Wallis, no part of the paper generates as much feedback as Props and Disses. And, this man was not the first person upset at being singled out in Props and Disses. And, some of what he said was a challenge to the role of our newspaper in this community. Before I get to that, I want to note the purpose of Props and Disses. The visitor complained and, this I hear a lot on Props and Disses that Nichols did not contact him before writing the item. While JH Weekly does original reporting throughout the paper, Props and Disses isn t that. The column is popular because people enjoy the humor, No one likes to be criticized in the media, and that is true even in the big city. attitude and originality of Nichols brief opinions on local stories based on reporting already done in our pages and elsewhere. Nichols cites where he got the information for his items. Though Nichols is offering opinions, the facts he brings in support of those opinions must be accurate as must be the details of the story. Online the column forges a community conversation generating numerous comments (some we print) to which Nichols often replies. The visitor then made the point that I am still thinking about. He noted in a community Send your comments to the size of Jackson Hole there is no need for a column that often knocks locals by name. But I don t think size matters; no one likes to be criticized in the media, and that is true even in the big city where, yes, there are more residents but also proportionally more people to read the upsetting item. In the end, the visitor felt I truly did not grasp the essential fact of community journalism by which he meant JH Weekly should offer only praise and a booster s opinions. And, while there are newspapers that do that, I have never wanted to be a part of one of those. In all goodwill I believe a real newspaper is necessary when a community is big enough to be tied together with common issues. That is certainly true in Jackson Hole. Like our reporting, our editorial opinions hope to bring an informed voice to the issues in our town. We also print the strong opinions and comments sent to us by local readers as well so that everyone can be heard in our pages. To me this role is the essential job of a community newspaper. More History from Pink Garter There is a gaping hole in Aaron Davis s review of the history of the Pink Garter Theater ( The Rose blooms, March 7). Davis overlooked the entire run of theatrical productions that took place when the theater was known as the Mainstage Theater, from the late 90s until the Center for the Arts was built in the middle of the next decade, during the tenure of the Performing Arts Company of Jackson Hole. The theater was anything but dormant during this time. I performed in my first local theatrical production, Our Town, at the Mainstage in By the next year, the Performing Arts Company had formed, with the Mainstage as its home. I was fortunate to appear in PAC/JH productions of Bus Stop and The Dining Room that year, Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 in 2000, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum in 2001, and several other plays in the following years. If my offthecuff memory is right (it isn t always), Petticoat Rules debuted at the Mainstage and ran there for a summer. There were other summer shows, and many more productions beyond those in which I was lucky enough to perform. It s more than just an oversight to neglect PAC/JH s history in the Pink Garter. That company was the predecessor of the Off Square Theater Company, which carried the banner of Jackson s foremost theatrical company from the Mainstage to the Center for the Arts, where it continues today. John Byrne Cooke Smell the coffee Women: Are you aware that the legislature in Texas is trying to (or have enacted a law) that requires doctors to lie to their female patients on the physical condition of their fetus if it has health problems. Many states around the country are passing laws the violate the privacy between a woman and her doctor by requiring the doctor to perform procedures such as ultra sound and invasive vaginal exams even though the doctor doesn t believe it s necessary. The Wyoming legislature is about to produce an anticontraception law in an attempt to challenge the Affordable Care Act. Women are 51% of voters yet it s the male population in state governments that believe women aren t intelligent enough to make health decisions for themselves. What we have here folks is a religious fascist battle plan imitates the views of the Taliban in which our soldiers are fighting. It s my opinion that religious organizations should be taxed, property, assets, and donations and the religious tax should be used by all states to fund homeless shelters, health clinics, food banks, and Planned Parenthood. Laws are trying to be enacted that would describe a fertilized egg as a person and afforded all constitutional rights, this while stripping constitutional rights for more than half our citizens.the Personhood law will create womb police that will keep track of pregnancies making sure that any miscarriage was not self induced. Let s put an end to this madness by voting out all conservative lawmakers, and this threat to your freedoms will be protected. Butch Krichmar Send your letters to 4 March 14 20, 2012 l JH Weekly l updated daily SnowReport Sponsored by New Belgium Brewing Wrath of the dragon On Wednesday, Mar. 7, 2012, two loved friends and talented skiers were taken by the white dragon. While undertaking an impressive oneday ascent in the Tetons, Chris Onufer and Steve Romeo unknowingly triggered a massive avalanche, and were swept away for their final moment. And so it has happened again that the mountains have claimed the lives of our friends. This life of Live to ski, (Romeo s mantra), cherish and seize the moment, and the desire to be free in the mountains, can be so precious and so dangerous. Mountain people mourn their lost friends and curse the hills, but our love endures for the souls lost and nature that took them. Currently the snowpack is complicated. Extreme temperatures cause rapid metamorphism within the snowpack causing a slope s stability to change drastically during the day. Meltfreeze crusts ski nice when softened. But when frozen, skiers are pushed onto high north faces, where weak layers persist. So try to control the uncontrollable and know the dragon has woken and we are in the turbulence of the dragon s wake. Lisa Van Sciver

5 Last week both Richard Abowitz and furious letter writer Butch Krichmar condemned another of Wyoming legislature s critically important ideas, this one requiring drug tests for welfare recipients. According to Abowitz, Senator Kit Jennings, one of Wyoming s finest, that is if you don t count the other 550,000 of us, claimed his constituents ask him why they have to get tested at their work and welfare recipients do not. Maybe someone should inform Jennings that many people in his area work in dangerous energy jobs; drug and alcohol testing is a safety requirement. Abowitz supposes Jennings lacks the imagination to know the difference between a job and welfare or that bill sponsors want to humiliate welfare recipients. I think it goes deeper than that. The sponsors of this bill could give a hoot if welfare recipients, all 117 of them according to Abowitz, were smoking crack, pot or alfalfa. They are merely pandering to a GOP ideology that is no longer conservative, but purses strict adherence to PUBLIC EDITOR Mike Bressler It s boutique, ya see what a few party chiefs, leaders of voter blocks and media talking heads are enraged about on any particular day. They believe in freedom for everyone who thinks like they do; they re like Democrats on steroids. It s tragic really; the Wyoming GOP used to have a streak of populism, of individualism and generally did not give a damn about what the national party thought. The fact that Wyoming Republicans gave Ron Paul, the independent minded Libertarian, 21 percent of the recent caucus vote makes it clear regular Republicans think for themselves, but elected officials seem unable to pick their nose without wondering which finger makes them appear more conservative to voters. At least elected Wyoming Democrats, both of them, don t suck up to the national party, if for no other reason than their survival in a Republican state, and they go their own way on issues like gun control. A town like Jackson, a sporting town, should take bets on the bar and grill liquor license that is being perused by five Send your questions, comments, grievances and ideas to the public editor, restaurants, ( Last call for alcohol, The Buzz, Mar. 7). As there are five applicants, the payoff should be four to one to the winner. However, I will take all comers that Thai Me Up and Bubba s don t receive the license and I will even take money instead of 2 to 3. First there was a cover story on Von Salad and Café Ponza, followed by stories on loan defaults and assorted lawsuits, now a cover story on The Rose. Does the JH Weekly receive kickbacks from the Pink Garter? If so, can someone tell me how to get in on the action? When describing the new bar, JH Weekly reporter Aaron Davis ( The Rose blooms, Mar. 7) took a page from restaurant critic Dina Mishev. He waxed poetic on the contemporary early 1900s décor, whatever that is. He used words like intimate, cozy, precise, timeless, visionary, artdecostyle; posh he used twice. Its drinks are boutique, vintage, classic and contemporary. For the uninformed, a shot of Jose Cuervo is classic, with a lime it s vintage, with salt it s contemporary, with both it s boutique. 6 B Woontanara Aid provides hope By Jake Nichols When Daria moved from Winnipeg, Canada to Jackson Hole in 1988, she couldn t have known the trip would be but a short journey on her way to a developing nation in Africa. After devoting the next decade of her life to Dancers Workshop, Daria, who uses no last name, discovered drumming and the djembe called her to Guinea. The drumming opened the door to Africa, Daria said. I didn t go there the first time thinking, I am going to help them. What Daria saw she could not ignore. Poverty and corruption in Guinea are the rule. She began a nonprofit called Woontanara Aid in 2006 with the mission statement: to sustainably improve the lives of people in need in West Africa by providing educational opportunities, vocational training, food and medical support for women, orphaned children and people with disabilities. Woontanara means Here we are, all together, in the native tongue of Susu. By Jake Nichols Builders work to erect a roof on a Guinea school before May s rain arrives. I can t even tell you how many times I ve been back to Guinea. I ve lost count, Daria said of the threeday, 6,100mile journey from her home in Driggs. Supported in the U.S. by Reed Sullivan, also from Driggs, and Kelly Hopkins, from Salem, Ore., Daria and Woontanara have small plans for the disadvantaged in Conakry, Guinea. To the locals, those plans are as big as life and death. Woontanara teaches underprivileged children in Guinea, providing fullride scholarships to kids who can t pay. Two teachers are on staff for Woontanara in Conakry. Many of the students parents were beggars, or close to it, with no means of supporting themselves or their family. Daria launched an outreach program called Program Aide Handicapees (PAH) a sewing school where the handicapped make clothes for their family or for resale to earn a living. PAH began with one teacher, one sewing machine, and five students, Daria said. We now have two fulltime teachers, four sewing machines, and 15 students. On my latest trip to Guinea we began construction on our own building for the sewing school. After much government paperwork, we made it happen. Daria ran out of money and time to finish the building, and time is against her. The rainy season will begin in May. By June, torrential downpours will threaten the building s integrity. It still has no roof. So I am back in the States to fundraise, Daria said. Once the roof is on, I can finish it over time. Daria communicates with local Guinea staffers via weekly. Money transfers are set up with a system of checks and balances. At least two people are always required to give an account of where the money goes. All communication is in French with the occasional Susu thrown in. Daria will plan another trip to Guinea soon, with the hopes of bringing the people there good news or at least a roof over their heads. To volunteer or donate, visit: or call Daria at Wyoming s raucous caucus: drawn out and complicated If it s difficult to make any sense of the presidential primary results grabbing daily headlines, imagine trying to sort out Wyoming s plan of attack when it comes to choosing the next GOP candidate for President. The process begins with a pointless straw poll in early February and ends with a midapril state convention. It s a whole lot to do for a state largely ignored by Presidential candidates even though we will send a whopping 29 delegates to the national convention in Florida. In Wyoming, precinct caucuses decided which delegates would attend county conventions held March 6 through 10. Teton County held its convention in the Snow King ballroom on Tuesday, March 6. Diana Vaughan was selected to represent the county as our national delegate. She remained uncommitted as to which GOP candidate she would endorse. Vaughan s 25 votes beat out Bob Grady (16 votes), who said he would back Mitt Romney and Georgia Ligori s three votes. It won t matter much, anyway. Counties are paired so that in alternating terms, one sends the delegate, one sends the alternate. Vaughan will go as Teton County s alternate to Sublette. State of confusion The county conventions net 12 delegates and 12 alternates headed to Cheyenne for the state shindig on April 14. At the statewide Republican convention another 14 atlarge delegates get selected, and it is only then that COURTESY WOONTANARA AID Romney will know for sure if he has Wyoming s nod of approval. Until then, it is only speculation. So far, Romney has easily outpaced his rivals and won seven of the 12 delegates at stake. Santorum won three, Paul one. One delegate went uncommitted. In a world of instant gratification brought about by the electronic communication, why does Wyoming hold its Super Tuesday over a period of twoandahalf months? A big reason the process is spread out is so Wyoming ranchers can tend to their stock during calving season, believe it or not. Most good Republicans are standing by with a calf puller during busy spring weeks in case of breech births. Cattlemen, after all, are almost never Democrats. Props&Disses By Jake Nichols Days of horses on Puzzleface. DAVE KORNBLUM Abermination at Puzzleface Ranch Ever since Fintan Ryan bought Puzzleface Ranch in August 2010 the clock has been ticking on just how long horse owners could enjoy boarding there, fowls could enjoy bathing there, and the public could enjoy the visual sprawl relief from nearby Skyline development. The wait is over. Cue the bulldozers. Time to stroke another ego with a trophy home. At least some nailbangers will be kept busy for a season. Ryan informed the County in January 2011 that he would be erecting his amourpropre monument and would need to alter the earth in order to shield himself from the riffraff along Highway 22 by building 18foot high berms. The County sternly warned Ryan the house was not to exceed a total of 10,000 square feet and they weren t sure whether the berms were permissible. Given the County s track record on establishing and enforcing LDRs and stuff, and given most multimillionaire s notions of selfworth, expect the worst. Remember Thomas and CarolAnne Crow? They overbuilt their home in Owl Creek west of the airport to 13,000 square feet, adding an unauthorized bedroom and three bathrooms. They simply paid a fine. Them 1, County 0. At the South Park gravel pit, the County barked at SeherrThoss about ceasing gravel crushing and SeherrThoss barked back. Them 2, County 0. Developer Jamie Mackay moved triplewide trailers onto his campground, seemingly in defiance of LDRs, believing his lawyer Dave Defazio could handle the flak. Mackay was allowed to keep the trailers and paid a pittance of a fine. Them 3, County 0. A pattern has been established. The County is a pushover. So when Jeff Daugherty says things like, We re worried that the berms will obscure the natural form of the hillside behind it, and if they do what they proposed, expect Ryan has tacit permission to blot out the sun. The Nature Conservancy isn t exactly riding herd on the Nevada developer either. They manage the easement on the property which stipulates it must be kept as a working ranch yet signed off on redevelopment there. Chamber of Commerce nabs fourstar rating The Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce snagged a fourstar accreditation by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The rating system goes to a fivestar max. No one has ever scored lower than three, except maybe Rock Springs or Newark. The award puts the JH COC in the top two percentile across the country and establishes the organization as part of an elite group of 152 chambers of commerce nationwide that have been validated by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Accreditation Program as having solid programs, demonstrating clear organizational procedures, and as being a catalyst for positive action in the community. JH COC improved upon its 2006 rating of three stars. Chamber executive director Tim O Donoghue said his organization has worked hard since then to improve member services. I also believe our accreditation is a reflection of the excellence present in our business and overall community, O Donoghue added. The Chamber s current campaign is Great until 8: Open Late, an initiative aimed at convincing retailers to remain open later. Locals are encouraged to shop between 6 and 8 p.m. for a chance at winning up to $250 in Chamber bucks. Scoop the Mutt Mitt Let s quit kidding ourselves. Mutt Mitts aren t helping things. It might have been a wellintentioned idea but storing your dog s feces in a plastic bag alongside the trail is ludicrous. A study needs to be done but a rough estimate would probably find about 85 percent of dogwalkers scoop the poop real good it s the tossing of the bulging Mutt Mitt into a proper receptacle that seems to miff most. And the only thing worse than a fresh steamer in the ski track is a steamer in a bag. Sure, the Mutt Mitts are degradable. They begin breaking down in as little as 90 days, according to the manufacturer. Some people might consider that close to three months. If left exposed to Wyoming sun and air and rain and snow, unbagged poop mines would disintegrate in about 48 hours. Isn t this valley all about organic? What s more natural than doggy doo making stuff grow? Highconcentration areas like Emily s Pond and Cache Creek are going to stink to high heaven but that may keep out the aggressive skate skiers, Butch Krichmar, and other nondog types whose idea of eliminating dog waste is eliminating the dog from whence it came. All the money PAWS of Jackson Hole spends on stocking the Mutt Mitt stations and emptying the cans could be spent once a year, in the spring, toward a good oldfashioned corral scrape of the aforementioned areas. 6 March 14 20, 2012 l JH Weekly l updated daily

7 By Jake Nichols Wyoming filmmaker scores Daniel Junge Like so many in the entertainment profession, Daniel Junge paid his dues. After graduating from film school he moved to Los Angeles and New York, taking whatever job presented itself on independent productions. He tried South America briefly, then London working for BBC. All the while, Junge pitched idea after idea only to have studios say no. With nowhere else left to turn, Junge came home. He set out to make a documentary about a Wyoming Indian High School basketball team he remembered from his days growing up in Cheyenne. Chiefs premiered at the inaugural Tribeca Film Festival in 2002, where it won Best Documentary and finally opened doors that had been closed to Junge for a decade. He learned a cherished lesson. My advice is: Don t wait for yes because, invariably, they won t ever say yes, Junge says. With the tools available now, anyone can be a documentary filmmaker. Just get a camera, even a cheap one, and start shooting. It is all about the story. That s how I started with Chiefs. I finally said, to hell with it, and did it myself. Film Maker Magazine called Junge one of the 25 new faces in film in After several wellreceived projects, Junge scored an Oscar nomination in 2009 for his documentary short film The Last Campaign of Governor Booth Gardner. Not bad for a 1988 Cheyenne East graduate who took extra credit at Thunderbird TV to learn the craft. Last month, Junge s biggest career moment came when he made his way to the stage at the 84th annual Academy Awards, accepting an Oscar for Saving Face. The 40minute documentary which began airing on HBO this month tells the story of the many women in Pakistan who are attacked with acid and one cosmetic surgeon who has returned to his homeland to help restore their faces and their dignity. Junge shares director credit with Pakistani Sharmeen ObaidChinoy, who helped him navigate about in a foreign world with customs unfamiliar to a Wyoming native. This is a movie about women who are disempowered in Pakistan or anywhere in developing countries with social injustice, Junge says. All documentaries are hard: the logistics of working in a foreign country, the emotional toll of seeing these women. But Sharmeen was a great partner and the women themselves made it easier. Their courage empowered us as filmmakers. Of course, I now fear for their safety but hopefully we have made authorities on the ground there aware of the cause. These women have absolutely taken great risk by coming forward and we certainly applaud them for that. Junge says his recent success has already translated into a bloated day planner. He just inked a twopicture deal with Lions Gate Entertainment, the most commercially successful independent film distribution company in North America. Next up for Junge is Fight Church, a feature documentary on the confluence of Christianity and mixed martial arts, including ministries which train fighters; and Alpha Boys, a film about a Jamaican school for disadvantaged boys considered to be the birthplace of reggae. Wherever Hollywood takes Junge, he ll always be a little bit Wyoming. I was born in Sheridan and raised in Cheyenne. My folks are still in Wyoming, Junge says. It is probably intangible but I think there is a lot of Wyoming in my films. The rugged individuality that has always been cherished by the people of Wyoming is what I also find in many of my subjects, and it comes from my upbringing in Wyoming. I will come back to make a movie there someday. DEXIGNER PAUL KELLY Associate Broker, GRI IAN SINCLAIR Sales Associate, GRI Located in the Village Center.
