Fair Trade and Social Justice Jerry Li Danielle Hoey Kenny Cheng Kaori Murata

What is Fair Trade? Fair Trade: Social movement that improves production in developing countries to provide equality in international trading systems. Focuses on fair international and domestic trade with essential commodity foods, such as coffee, cocoa, fresh fruits, grains, and sugar.

What is Social Justice? Social Justice: Fair practices in distributing equal wealth and providing equal advancement opportunities to workers. Emphasis on workers rights, including fair distribution of fair trade profits, ensuring that working conditions are safe and acceptable, and providing an ideal environment for worker productivity.

Strategies employed 1. Price Premiums Example: Bananas from foreign countries are typically used as Fair Trade product. These bananas will usually be higher priced in order to give back to the producer so their working conditions can improve.

Strategies employed 2. Certification and Labelling Example: Labels on Fair Trade products can say Fair Trade Certified in the United States. In Europe, there are labels such as Max Havelaar, TransFair, Fairtrade Mark and Rättvisemärkt. The European labelling is organized by FLO (Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International.

Strategies employed 3. Microcredit Example: Deploying very small loan (microloans) to poor producers so they get a financial establishment going and can continue provide for their families as well as produce products essential to us. These can be used by the producers to get started on fair trade projects.

Strategies Employed 4. Technical Support Example: FTOs giving business support, trade information, advices on quality standard and training in agricultural techniques.

Strategies Employed 5. Advocacy Example: Relates to branding and marketing of Fair Trade. This can appeal to very niche consumers in supermarkets who are willing to pay more for products that are fair trade.

Pros of Strategies Producers get better wages. Better prices for farmers sometimes do not increase consumer cost, because FTOs can take out intermediaries. Consumers can learn that they are being considerate to the third-world farmers. Higher wages for export contribute to potential technological advancements in farming and agricultural practices.

Cons of Strategies Market Share is too small to make an impact on poor living conditions Producing these low priced commodities doesn t really do much for their development when it s in an oversupplied market. Lots of different criteria, it is hard for the consumers to know what exactly is FAIR.

FLO: Fair Trade Labeling Organization Small farmer s organization: standards include requirements for decision making, ensuring that producers have a say in how the fair trade premiums are invested. They also include requirements for capacity building and economic strengthening of the organization. Hired Labour Situation: Ensuring that that workers are receiving decent and fair wages, making sure that there no forced child labor practices, and health/safety standards are being met.

University of California Strategies

UC Davis: Coffee in resident dining commons Starbucks Bananas in dining commons on Friday Guayaki yerba matte tea Bottled Honest Tea and Honest Ade

UC Santa Cruz: Coffee: The Community of Agroecology Network (CAN) Fair Trade Direct fair trade direct provides better returns to the farmers than traditional fair trade and much better than conventional coffee, nearly 200% more return to the grower than Fair Trade -UC Santa Cruz Sustainable Foodservice Goals & Annual Reports 2013

UC Santa Barbara: Numi Tea (Organic and fair trade) Fair Trade Organic Coffee

UC Irvine: Eco Grounds and/or Fair Trade coffee: 3 residential dining locations 9 retail dining locations Starbucks Cyber A Cafe 3 convenience stores

UC San Diego: UC San Diego Fair Trade University Policy: Clear labels on product Signage displayed by main entrance of cashier Fair Trade Advisory Committee Meets twice a quarter Chocolate bars bulk Ice Cream Pints multiple flavors, only certified fair trade

UC System Sustainable Foodservice Policy: Campus and Medical Centers food operations must give students the choice of either self-operating (Dining Commons) and Contract-operating (Starbucks, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut).

Sustainable Foods & Beverages in Operations Foods and beverages provided by the operations must be one or more of the criteria. This is reviewed annually by the UC Sustainable Foodservices Working Group under the UC Sustainability Steering Committee. Locally Grown * Grass-finished/100% Locally Raised, Handled, and Dist. Certified Humane Fair Trade Certified ** Animal welfare Domestic Fair Trade Certified Global animal partnership Bird Friendly Coffee Cage-free Rainforest Alliance Certified * Def. distances shall not exceed 500 Food Alliance Certified miles. USDA Organic ** Products must be 3rd party certified AGA Grass Fed by IMO, FLO, or Fair Trade USA

More on the Policy & Goals Exercising Social Justice: the food service must have profit sharing with all employees, prevailing wages, transportation and or housing support, and health care benefits. Achieve 20% sustainable food purchases by the year Operations track and report annually the % of total annual food budget spent on sus. foods. Campuses and Medical Centers are encouraged to implement training programs for all foodservice staff on sustainable foodservice operations so that staff can effectively communicate with the customers about sustainable food options. Campuses and Medical Centers are encouraged to participate in national programs to raise awareness on dietary health, wellness and sustainability (e.g the MyPlate.gov Corportate Challenge and the Real Food Challenge).

Discussion! First and foremost, any questions? What is your favorite fair trade food commodity? Would anyone like to share an experience of social injustice at their work of employment? Has anyone been a part of an organization that has participated in Free Trade? Elaboration?
