George has been researching Native American Indian burial grounds for the past several years. He acquired a large amount of information pointing to the Native American Indian mounds in the Lake Minnetonka area. At some point, I realized that I had enough bits of information to understand fully where some of George Buehl with burial mound model these mounds might be located, and I had the software tools I needed to put it all together. 3 October continued from page 2 With this museum exhibit, George saw a valuable need to inform and educate the public of these sacred historical sites and he selflessly devoted years studying and compiling research, said Doug Stuyvenberg, George s supervisor. In August 2014, George visited the Westonka Historical Society Museum where he asked one of the tour guides, Vern Brandenburg, if anyone there had an interest in Mound s burial mounds. I got very lucky, George said. The tour guide grew up within the 21HE64 burial mounds boundaries. As we were discussing these mounds, Vern shared with me that when he was 14 years old, in the summer of 1947, there was an excavation of one of the mounds by the State of Minnesota. He went there daily to witness the excavation. I then shared with him an excavation report I had previously found in the publication Burial Mounds of Central Minnesota. We determined that it was indeed Mound No. 59 that was excavated in Vern s presence. Vern then took George to the place where the mound once was, and showed him the actual location of Mound No. 59. I now had enough information to create this exhibit, George said. The resulting exhibit shows the 69 Halstead Bay Mounds (also known as the Malmsten Mounds - 21He64). Check out the exhibit at the Westonka History Museum, which is open on Saturdays, 10am - 2pm, and by appointment. A booklet has been created by George, to accompany the 3D - printed model exhibit. This booklet contains historical background information on the mound group, various maps with the burial mounds super - imposed, newspaper articles of the past, and mound excavation reports.
