3 KEYNOTE SPEAKER SPEAKER KEYNOTE KATRINA S. ROGERS, PHD Katrina is president of Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, CA. She has served the international non-governmental and educational sectors in many roles, including executive, board member, and teacher. Katrina led the European campus for Thunderbird School of Global Management in Geneva, Switzerland, for a decade, working with international organizations such as the Red Cross, World Trade Organization, United Nations Development Program, and the European Union. She has doctorates in political science and history. In addition to many articles and books focused on organizational leadership in sustainability, Katrina serves on the boards of the Toda Institute for Global Policy & Peace Research and the Public Dialogue Consortium. She received a presidential postdoctoral fellowship from the Humboldt Foundation and was a Fulbright scholar to Germany, where she taught environmental politics and history. 3
4 LEADERSHIP PANELISTS RON MCKINNON A long-time political blogger and regular campaign volunteer, Ron was elected to the House of Commons to represent Coquitlam Port Coquitlam, British Colombia, in Passionate about promoting and protecting human rights both at home and abroad, Ron is an ardent advocate of electoral reform and has been an active member in the local chapter of Amnesty International for many years. Ron served as director and vice president of the Evergreen Cultural Centre Society, and is a member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights. His Private Member s Bill, Bill C-224, The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act, has received widespread support from other MPs, politicians at all levels, and members of the public. As a successful business owner and computer systems analyst, Ron provided document management systems consulting and development services to major firms in Canada, the US, and overseas. Ron has a bachelor of science from the University of Alberta, and an honours diploma in computer technology from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. 4
5 VALERIE NISHI, MBA, PHD Valerie strives to cultivate more conscious, courageous, and creative leadership to solve business and social challenges. Her PhD research explored the impact of aesthetic factors (co-creation of objects and performances) on leadership development and developed a new framework for aesthetic learning design. Valerie integrates over 20 years of experience in the telecommunications, energy, professional services, and social enterprise sectors. As co-founder of the Women s Leadership Foundation, Valerie and the WLF team delivered four leadership forums engaging over 3,000 leaders across Canada. She also served as past director and special advisor to Youth in Motion and the Top 20, Under 20 program. JEAN-PIERRE ISBOUTS, DLITT Jean-Pierre is a humanities scholar and bestselling National Geographic author with a particular interest in ancient cultures and biblical history. In addition, he is a filmmaker who has been involved with digital media from its very inception in the 1980s. He was president of an international multimedia company, Authoring Systems, and served as managing director of Philips Interactive Media Europe, a joint venture of Philips and Polygram. He then founded Pantheon, which in its 22- year history has worked with many international publishers and Hollywood studios in the development of digital media and programming. Together with Fred Steier, he serves as lead faculty of the Media, Technology and Innovation (MTI) concentration at Fielding. 5
6 ALICE MACGILLIVRAY, PHD Alice brings long-term interests in leadership and complexity that inform her work and education in biology, ecology and complex systems. Her PhD is in human and organizational systems with MAs in leadership and human development. Her interest in leadership was triggered while working for BC Parks, when a conversation with her deputy minister catalyzed her interest in new models of leadership, several of which mirrored principles from the natural world. Much of Alice s research and consulting is about the interplay between leadership, knowledge, and complexity. Her focus today will be the mismatch between the nature of complex problems and the language we problem solvers have adopted to deal with them. CRAIG VANDERMEER, MA Craig, originally from the Ottawa area, spends most of his time between Vancouver, BC, Kampala, Uganda and Quito, Ecuador. In 2011, he graduated from Simon Fraser University with an MA in International Studies. He has conducted research on oil discoveries in Uganda, founded a nonprofit focusing on the inclusion of vocational/ skills-based training in the Ugandan education system, and founded Insight Global Education, a social enterprise devoted to changing the way the West perceives the developing world. He has a particular passion for educational leadership, with emphasis on social justice and global gender equality. Craig s interests range from domestic policies on the environment to the role our country plays in both the development and suppression of emerging nations. 6
7 SCHOLAR-PRACTITIONER SCHOLAR PRACTITIONER SHOWCASE SHOWCASE JOHN INMAN, EDD - ELC John s practice is based on the belief that leaders hold the key to transforming employees performance and lives. He is dedicated to helping leaders deliver outstanding performance through developing respectful conversations that foster cultures of engagement and innovation where each team member can build on their gifts and realize their potential. He has invested over 30 years of learning to create cultures where team members engage and thrive, and has a deep understanding of how people learn, grow, and excel, both individually and as part of teams. MARI SWINGLE, PHD - PSY Mari is the author of i-minds: How Cell Phones, Computers, Gaming, and Social Media Are Changing our Brains, Our Behavior, and the Evolution of Our Species (New Society Press, 2016). She is an active practitioner and researcher at the Swingle Clinic in Vancouver, Canada, and winner of a 2015 Federation of Associations of Behavioral and Brain Sciences (FABBS) Foundation Early Career Impact Award for her research on the effects of screen-based technologies, or i-tech, on brain function. Dr. Mari, as she is known at her clinic, presents her research and speaks regularly on the topic of i-media on neurophysiology and the effects of technologies on socio-emotional and cognitive development of children and adults. BRETT CLAY, PHD - HOD Brett is president of Change Leadership Group, a management consulting and leadership development company. He is the author of Selling Change: 101+ Secrets for Growing Sales by Leading Change the winner of 10 awards and published in five languages, which builds on his first book, Forceful Selling: How You Can Achieve Explosive Growth by Harnessing the Forces of Change On behalf of Fielding Graduate University and the Office of Alumni Relations, we would like to extend special thanks to Dawne Bringeland for all of her work organizing this event. 7
