Distinguished Scholar, Georgetown University, Washington DC Adjunct Professor, USUHS, Bethesda, MD ******* Dr. Virginia K. Saba has had a career that focused on the uses of the emerging technologies for the nursing profession. She is recognized as a pioneer in the integration of computer technology [now Nursing Informatics (NI)] in the nursing profession. For over 40 years she spearheaded the nursing informatics movement nationally and internationally and initiated its acceptance through unique and new innovative programs. Through her efforts, NI was professionally recognized as a new nursing specialty which required its own standards, academic programs, and educational materials which she helped initiate. She also promoted distant learning technologies and developed computer-based information systems for clinical nursing practice including the research and development of the Clinical Care Classification (CCC) System. She is an Informatics specialist and consultant, who currently supports and implements the CCC System primarily in hospitals or other healthcare facilities around the world. She also serves on the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) S & I Framework-subcommittees: longitudinal Coordination of Care (LCC), and Transitions of Care. Further, she serves as an Adjunct Faculty member at several universities teaching online courses that focus on nursing terminologies, database design, and clinical nursing practice documentation in NI and HIT systems. Dr. Saba s accomplishments in the nursing informatics movement are impressive. As early as 1981, she initiated the 1 st National NI Conference at National Institutes of Health. Also during that year she organized its first NI sessions and NI working group at the then leading healthcare conference Annual Symposium on Computer Applications in Medical Care (SCAMC). She continued to initiate computer technology nursing sessions at local, state, national, and international conferences endorsed by professional nursing organizations such as the ANA, National league for Nursing (NLN), and the International Council of Nurses (ICN) etc. She also served as a consultant to the Nightingale Project, a European Union funded project, on nursing telematics. She was instrumental in initiated the formation of the ANA Council for Computer Applications in Nursing (CCAN) where she not only served on the board, but also chaired for several years. This committee was the driving force that promoted NI as a new nursing specialty. It created its own Scope and Standards of Nursing Informatics Practice, certification program, criteria for NI classification systems, and represented professional nursing in the emerging technology initiatives. During her 20 year tenure, she served at Georgetown University School of Nursing as a Distinguished Scholar where she taught and integrated computer technology in the academic programs. She developed and educated faculty and student on the uses of the computer in newly for laboratories, and served as liaison to campus-wide computer committees. She is credited as having developed and taught one of the first Nursing Informatics (NI) academic courses there. She also served as an Adjunct Professor at the Uniformed Services University (USU) where she taught and integrated computer technology in the Graduate School of Nursing Research Program. She developed a research database for the military services in CINAHL. At USU she also designed and coordinated a Distance 12

13 Learning Project (DL) between the Department of Defense (DoD) and Veterans Administration (VA). The DL Project was a prototype program using interactive video with ten participating VA Medical Centers culminating in its first virtual graduation. Prior to academia, she was a Commissioned Nurse Officer and consultant in the US Public Health Service (PHS), Dr. Saba provided national leadership to improve the quality of nursing education and practice. She conducted national surveys, developed, and tested computer-based information systems in State and local health agencies. In her position, she promoted the use of computer-based technology to solve problems in administration, education, research, and clinical nursing practice. As a national and international recognized NI expert, she has served on numerous committees, conducted workshops, lectured, presented scientific papers at national and international conference, and published numerous articles. Dr. Saba has authored several books, book chapters, and articles including two editions of the CCC Manual: A Users Guide to Nursing Documentation, ( ), five editions of Essentials of Nursing (Computers) Informatics ( 1986, 1996, 2001, 2006, 20112, and served as one of the first editors for the Computers in Nursing (CIN) Journal (now called CIN: Computers, Informatics, Nursing).. She is a Fellow of American Academy of Nursing (FAAN), American College of Medical Informatics (FACMI), member of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Honor Society, and Academy of Medicine of Washington, DC. Served on the Board of the Friends of the National Library of Medicine (FNLM). She was instrumental in the formation of the Expert Panel on Nursing Informatics for the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) and chaired. She was also the Past Chair of Nursing Informatics Special Interest Group (NI- SIG) of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA). She has received numerous awards including: (a) 2006 First AMIA-Virginia Saba Award for Nursing Informatics, (b) American Academy of Nursing Living Legend Award (2002), (c) AMIA Nursing Informatics Working Group Appreciation Award for her seminal work in nursing informatics and for professional leadership in promoting the development of the field, (d) USUHS Award for spearheading DoD/VA Distance Learning Project; (e) Georgetown University School of Nursing (GU-SON) Faculty Distinguished Service Award for her dedication to the GU- SON; (f) first Sigma Theta Tau International Information Resources Information Award for her dedication and commitment to the advancement of nursing through information systems and computer technology; (g) Excellence in Nursing Informatics Awards from the ANA and Rutgers College of Nursing, and (h) PHS Commendation Medal for her contribution in manpower and management information system studies. Dr. Saba is the CEO and President of SabaCare Inc. that provides the nationally recognized nursing terminology: Clinical Care Classification (CCC) System to support the electronic capture of discrete patient care data for documenting the essence of care for nursing and measuring the relationship of nursing care to patient outcomes. Virginia K. Saba EdD, RN, Honorary PhD, DS, FAAN, FACMI, LL (AAN) is a graduate of Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY with a Bachelors of Nursing Science, a Masters of Nursing Arts, Teachers College, Columbia University, NY, NT, a Masters of Science in Computer Technology of Management, & Doctorate of Education in Educational Administration and Scientific & Technical Information Science from American University, Washington, DC, and has Honorary Doctorates from University of Athens, Greece (6 / 2000), Excelsior College.
