New Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries SCHOLARSHIPS/AWARDS/PRIZES On behalf of the Board of Governors, the Property and Finance Committee has approved the following terms of reference for new scholarships, awards, bursaries and prizes. Richard A. Harshman Memorial Scholarship (School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, Psychology and Philosophy) Awarded to a PhD student (part-time or full-time) based on academic achievement (minimum 78% average). To be eligible, a student must be in Year 2 or higher of a PhD program and be undertaking research in Statistical Methods or the Philosophy of Science. Candidates may apply through the Graduate Affairs Committee in either the Department of Psychology or the Department of Philosophy by submitting their CV and a one-page statement describing their research and relevant achievements, including publications. A committee with representation from the Department of Psychology or the Department of Philosophy, with at least one member who is a current member of the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, will select the recipient. Award recipients are eligible to receive this scholarship once during their academic career at Western. This award will alternate between the Departments of Psychology (odd years) and Philosophy (even years). This award was established through Foundation Western. Value: 1 at $1,000 Effective: May 2010 Dr. Wm. P. McGrath Scholarship for Research in Ophthalmology (School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies; Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Medicine; Any Undergraduate Faculty) Awarded to a full-time Master=s or Doctoral graduate student who is conducting research in the area of Ophthalmology. The recipient will be selected by a committee of faculty members involved in the graduate program of Pathology, including at least one representative who holds membership in the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. If there is no eligible graduate student in any given year, the scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program or in any undergraduate program, based on academic achievement and research merit in Ophthalmology. The selection of the recipients will be made by the appropriate selection process and in consultation with the Department of Ophthalmology Research Committee. This scholarship was established by Vera McGrath in honour of her late husband, Dr. William P. McGrath (MD>48) through Foundation Western. Value: 1 at $5,000 Effective: May 2009 Arts and Humanities Student Council Award (Faculty of Arts and Humanities) Awarded annually to a full-time student in second, third, or fourth year in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, who has achieved a minimum 80% average in the previous year of study, and has contributed to the growth and development of the Arts and Humanities community through extra-curricular involvement and/or philanthropic work. A one-page statement outlining the candidate=s extra-curricular involvement must be submitted to the Dean=s Office in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities by September 30. The scholarship and awards committee in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities will select the recipient. This award was established by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities Student Council through student levy donations. Value: 1 at $1,000 Effective: to academic years inclusive

Scholarship and Award Revisions On behalf of the Board of Governors, the Property and Finance Committee has approved the following revisions to the Terms of Reference of scholarships, awards, bursaries and prizes: Bernard and Bessie Wolf Scholarship (School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies; Faculty of Law) Change in criteria and value from: Awarded annually to the student in the LLB/MBA Program with the highest overall academic average over the four years of the program. Provided from the annual income of a trust fund established by the family and friends in honor of Bernard and Bessie Wolf. Value: 1 at $350 To: Awarded annually to the student in the JD/MBA program with the highest overall academic average over the three years in the program. Provided from the annual income of a trust fund established by the family and friends of Bernard and Bessie Wolf in their honour. Value: 1 at $725 Effective: academic year Atkinson Charitable Foundation Bursaries (Any Undergraduate Faculty) Change in name and criteria from: Awarded to two students who are residents of Ontario who demonstrate financial need. This bursary was established by the former publisher of the Toronto Star. To: Atkinson Charitable Foundation Bursary Awarded to a student who is a resident of Ontario who demonstrates financial need. Effective: academic year Clinical Excellence Awards (Faculty of Health Sciences, Nursing) Change in name and criteria from: Awarded to an undergraduate student in the final level of the Compressed Timeframe BScN Program within the School of Nursing. The recipient will have demonstrated excellence in all five domains of practice in each clinical rotation and have been recognized by faculty and/or clinical practice agencies as an exceptional practitioner. The School of Nursing Scholarships and Awards Committee will select the recipient. These awards were established by a gift from Dr. Warren Whelen and Mrs. Catherine Whelen (BScN `62). To: Cathy and Warren Whelen Clinical Undergraduate Awards Awarded to an undergraduate student in the final level of the Compressed Timeframe BScN Program within the School of Nursing who has demonstrated financial need. The recipient will have demonstrated excellence in all five domains of practice in each clinical rotation and will have been recognized by faculty and/or clinical practice agencies as an exceptional practitioner. Online financial-need applications are available through the Office of the Registrar=s Web site. The School of Nursing Scholarships and Awards Committee will select the recipient after the Office of the Registrar assesses financial need. Chapman Memorial Award (Faculty of Engineering) Awarded to a student entering the fourth and final year with the highest standing in the Electrical Engineering Program (Communications). Funds for this award are provided by Spar Aerospace Limited. To: Awarded to the student entering the fourth and final year with the highest standing in the Electrical Engineering Program. Application forms are available from the Office of the Registrar web site and must be submitted no later than October 31st. The recipient will be chosen by the Faculty of Engineering Scholarship Committee. Established in 1997 through the generosity of Western Parents. To: Awarded annually to a student in second, third or fourth year in the Faculty of Engineering who has achieved at least a 75% average, while demonstrating leadership in the community and participating in extra-curricular activities. Application forms are available from the Office of the Registrar=s Web site and must be submitted by September 30. The recipient will be chosen by the Faculty of Engineering Scholarship Committee. Rhoda Ann Rinn Scholarship in English Literature (Faculty of Arts and Humanities; Faculty of Social Science) Awarded on the basis of academic standing in first-year Arts or Social Sciences to a student who enrols in the second year of an Honors Specialization in English Language and Literature. The winner will be selected by the Scholarship Committee, on recommendation of the Department of English. The student selected must maintain at least an 80% average and remain in the Honors Specialization in English Language and Literature. The scholarship was established as a memorial to his mother by the late Lionel Harris Rinn, honors English graduate of this University. Tenable in the constituent university only To: Awarded on the basis of academic standing in first-year Arts or Social Sciences to a student who enrols in the second year of an Honors Specialization in English Language and Literature. The winner will be selected by the Scholarship Committee, on recommendation of the Department of English. Scholarships are continuous into third and fourth year based on maintenance of at least an 80% average or standing in the top 25% of the class. Established through the generosity of EMCO Limited. To: Awarded to students entering their second year of Engineering Science, preferably with a career objective in manufacturing or marketing, who have demonstrated leadership ability as well as involvement in outside activities. These scholarships continue into third and fourth year of the Engineering program based on maintenance of at least an 80% average or standing in the top 25% of the class. In order to retain these scholarships, students must continue to demonstrate financial need and must maintain at least an 80% average in principal courses in each of years two and three with continued registration in an Honors Specialization or double Major in an Honors degree in the Faculty of Science. Applications can be obtained through the Office of the Registrar and must be submitted by October 31. Final selection will be made by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for the Faculty of Science. Established through the generosity of the Richard Ivey Foundation. Applications can be accessed online through the Office of the Registrar's Web site and must be submitted by September 30 along with a short essay (max 250 words) describing extracurricular involvement. This award was established by the Engineering Class of 1967 through Foundation Western. Registrarial Services will determine financial need and the Faculty of Engineering, in consultation with the Richard Ivey School of Business, will select the recipient. The award will continue into the fifth year of the combined program if the recipient maintains at least a 70% average. A new recipient will be selected from the same year if the current recipient no longer qualifies. This award was established by a generous gift from the John Deere Foundation. To: Awarded biennially to a full-time student in the concurrent Engineering and Honors Business Administration degree program, based on demonstrated financial need and academic achievement (minimum 70% average). Online financial need applications are available through the Registrar=s Web site and are due by September 30.
