1 The University of Jordan Faculty of Rehabilitation Sciences Department of Occupational Therapy Course: Psychology in Rehabilitation Sciences ( ) Credit Hours: Two credit hours Prerequisite: Principles and Ethics of Medical Rehabilitation (180110) concurrent Course Instructors: Sana Abu-Dahab, PhD, OTR Office hours: Sundays 12-2, Wednesday 11-1 Razan Hamed, PhD, OTR Office hours: Tuesdays 10-12Wednesday 9-11 Lectures: Section I: Mondays & Wednesdays 11-12PM Section II: Mondays & Wednesdays 12-1PM Course Description This course discusses the psychosocial aspects of disability commonly encountered in rehabilitation settings. The course will help students communicate with patients in a therapeutic manner while considering important factors that may affect intervention planning implementation in all rehabilitation fields for children and adults. Common conditions include congenital, physical, mental, and long term disabilities. 1. General outcomes: Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students who regularly attend and participate will have a good understanding of the experience of chronic illness and disability and their effect on psychosocial functioning. Students will be able to reflect on the impact of chronic illness and disability on attitudes, social, and environmental aspects of an individual s life. 2. Intended Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to: 1- Understand modern approaches of human psychology (e.g., Humanistic, psychodynamics etc). 2- Understand basic concepts of human psychology (memory, emotions, intelligence, motivation etc.) 3- Understand the psychosocial aspects of chronic illness and disability including a. Coping b. Emotional reaction to disability c. Adaption and adjustments d. Effect of life cycle on chronic illness and disability e. Family adaptation to chronic illness and disability 4- Understand the functional aspects of chronic illness and disability including a. Social participation b. Life style activities c. Vocational Training

Professional behavior is expected during classes. No side conversations. No cellphones. No arriving late to classes. Issues related to cheating will be dealt with based on the guidelines of the University of Jordan. 2. No make-up exams will be given except in an emergency. Both the instructor and the department chairperson must be consulted PRIOR to a missed exam. 3. Attendance and participation will be closely monitored. Students who miss more than 4 lectures (15% of total lectures) will be withdrawn from the course and will not be allowed to take the final exams. 4. All students are required to be in class and ready for lecture on time. 5. Academic honesty and integrity are crucial parts of the academic experience. Honesty is expected with the class instructor and students. You must observe the University Academic Integrity Policy as found in the University of Jordan Student Handbook. You must always do your own work, and you may never plagiarize or cheat on tests or papers. Furthermore, all work you turn in must be completed by you for this specific class. Failure to follow this policy could lead to an F in the course, suspension, and even expulsion from the University.
