12 Use deadbolt locks. Install a peephole or wide angle viewer in your door. Door chains are not security devices they break easily and won't keep out an intruder. 12
13 Always keep your doors locked even when you're home. Secure sliding glass doors by placing a broomstick or steel rod in the track. 13
14 Use lighting and landscaping to make your home's surroundings unattractive to burglars, vandals, and other criminals. Plant thorny bushes under windows they can help keep intruders away. Consider an alarm system. 14
15 The Burlingame Police Department offers house checks for vacationing citizens Be an alert neighbor. If you see a stranger on their property, or if you see a vehicle you don t recognize backed up in a neighbor s driveway, don t hesitate to call the police. Do not approach the subjects. 15
16 Take extra precautions when you're on vacation. Make your home look lived in. Have a friend or neighbor pick up mail and newspapers daily. Put interior lights on timers. Don't hide keys in mailboxes, planters, or under doormats. Give an extra key to a neighbor you trust. 16
17 Record the make, model, serial number, value, and any other distinguishing features of all valuable property in your home. Engrave your California Driver s License number on property. (Note: Do not use your social security number to eliminate identity theft). 17

24 Avoid Becoming A Victim Do not discuss your personal finances with strangers Do not withdraw cash at the suggestion of someone you don t know Do not accept that a person is official or legitimate without check first Check state contractor license Sheri Boles Public Utilities Commission 24
25 Calling 911 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) is a Dispatch Center Landline telephone is a cord phone in a house or business 25
26 Calling 911 General Route Landline 911 calls are answered at the local PSAP Your address is displayed for the Dispatcher Fire and Medical calls transferred to San Mateo County Fire Dispatch Landline phones vs. Cellular Phones On landline phones, 911 into the local PSAP On Cellular phones, 911 routed to local PSAP or CHP in Vallejo Cellular phone are not associated with one fixed location or address. 26
27 Cellular Phones Tell the emergency operator the location of the emergency right away; Provide the emergency operator with your wireless phone number, so if the call gets disconnected, the emergency operator can call you back; Lock your keypad when you re not using your wireless phone to help prevent accidental calls to 911; Call from Land Line Phone This is what the information the 911 dispatcher will see when you place a call from a landline 27
28 Call from Cellular Phone 911 calls placed using cell telephone the closest cell tower 911 on Cell phones may cause Delay Calls to Highway Patrol will be transferred, but there is significant delay. Program cellular phones with direct emergency numbers If using emergency number, you must give address. 28
29 Get Info to the Dispatcher as Quickly as Possible Dispatchers are trained to obtain information from the callers as quickly as possible. Don t be offended if they curt. Their goal is to get you help! Necessary to obtain information for safety and apprehension Calling 911 Where did the Suspect go?? Make sure that the caller knows their directions N S E W. Suspect vehicle description, direction of travel Victims/witnesses where are they located? Stay on the line until told differently. Dispatcher may put caller on hold while attending to other duties (such as sending officers or calling ambulance) do not hang up unless directed to do so by Dispatcher 29
30 What should I do if I dial by mistake? Do not hang up! Remain on the line (even if you are unsure at first if the call went through) Tell the dispatcher that the call was a mistake. A common misconception is that you will get "in trouble" for accidentally dialing This is simply not true! Accidents happen. We understand! Use Common Terminology and Landmark Identifications Use common landmark terms to describe the location of an incident Use a cross street if possible Helps when directing emergency personnel to the proper location on the property or surrounding streets 30
31 Different Language or Hearing Impaired? Telecommunication Device for the Deaf (TDD) typed (text) communication with people who are hearing and/or speech impaired. Access to Language Line Services that provide 24hr/day over the phone interpretation of over 175 different languages. The process of getting an interpreter on the phone with the caller is generally less than one minute. Text Messages to 911 No. At this time, you are not able to send a text message to

If you call: o We will make contact with the subject. o We will ID if we can to make sure they are not wanted or missing. o If they need medical assistance, or are truly a danger to themselves, we will have them transported to a hospital. o If they are truly a nuisance, or breaking a law, we will take appropriate actions. Social services: o Offered at each contact. o Most are not interested. 32
33 Identity Theft Definition Acquiring key pieces of someone s information Impersonate them for any unlawful purpose. Enables the identity thief to commit numerous forms of fraud 33
34 Identity Theft What to do if you are a victim of identity theft Keep a log of all your contacts and make copies of all documents. File a report with the local police department. Call each of the three credit bureaus fraud units to report the identity theft. Ask to have a Fraud Alert/Victim Impact statement placed in your credit file asking that creditors call you before opening any new accounts. Monitor your credit history. What is the financial loss to you? Keep all supporting documents. Identity Theft Preventive Measures Never give personal information over the phone Shred documents Order your credit report from the three credit bureaus once a year Sign all new credit cards upon receipt. Also note on signature line, See ID. If you applied for a new credit card and it hasn t arrived in a timely manner, call the bank or credit card company involved. 34
