2 Letter from the Director of Athletics It is truly great to be a part of the University of Miami Hurricanes Athletics program. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Hurricane Club. We have had a lot to celebrate over the last 40 years, including 16 national championships, 350-plus All-Americans, and most important, the more than 3,000 degrees earned by the young men and women who represented our great institution. While all of these accomplishments are remarkable, I am confident that the future is even brighter. Melissa Bolivar, sophomore International Finance and Marketing 17 victories in her rookie year The coming year will see the continued development of our philosophy and vision for the future of Hurricanes athletics. As I have said previously, I am committed to a structure that demands commitment to our core values: education, sportsmanship, integrity, discipline, pride, accountability, respect, and passion. In addition to the 40th anniversary of the Hurricane Club, we will have many other highlights. The Schwartz Center for Athletic Excellence will break ground in December This facility will better position all of our programs efforts to sustain success. The facility will include a state-of-the-art academic center, new football locker room, modernized and expanded athletic training room, and a Gallery of Champions. Gabriela Mejia, senior International Finance and Marketing Sophomore All-American The future success of our athletic program depends on the financial support of people like you. As a member of the Hurricane Club, your contribution helps our student-athletes achieve excellence in academics, athletics, and life. It is our goal to work with each of you as we strive to collectively make our program better. We need your unconditional support to help ensure our growth as one of the premier athletic programs in the country. Go Canes! Sincerely, ,000+ Shawn Eichorst Director of Athletics The University of Miami rank in U.S.News & World Report s 2012 Best Colleges ranking The number of years in a row that the women s golf and men s diving teams have achieved a 100 percent Graduation Success Rate The number of UM athletic teams that achieved record highs in their Graduation Success Rates for 2011 rowing (96 percent), women s swimming and diving (93 percent), and football (88 percent) The number of University of Miami student-athletes who have earned degrees since the inception of the Hurricane Club in 1972 (40 years)
3 A N N U A L G I V I N G A Legacy of Spirit and Sportsmanship From the gridiron to the diamond and from the pool to the hardwood, a legacy of winning seasons at the University of Miami has produced more than 66 national championships and over 450 All-Americans, making the institution one of the most storied intercollegiate athletic programs in the country. Scholarship Cost for Student-Athletes over the Past Five Years 55, % 52,222 50,000 Just as important as a 40-yard dash time or the speed of a fastball are the heart and mindset of our University of Miami studentathletes. Inspired by a dream of playing intercollegiate athletics at the highest level, many of them have endeavored for their entire lives to be a Miami Hurricane and to represent the U not only on the playing field but also in the community. However, their success would not be possible without the Hurricane Club. Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Hurricane Club strengthens the University of Miami s commitment to helping student-athletes achieve greatness. Through the generosity of alumni, former student-athletes, and volunteers, the Hurricane Club greatly assists in funding scholarships, improving facilities, and providing the additional operational support necessary for all 17 varsity sports. 45,000 40, As a member of the Hurricane Club, your charitable gift is tax deductible and affords you several benefits such as priority seating at athletic events, hospitality, and access to members-only events. The Benefits chart in this brochure details all updated benefits for The greatest reward, however, is the direct and immediate impact your unconditional support has on the lives of our student-athletes National championships in football College World Series titles Heisman Trophy winners The Miami Hurricanes home game winning streak from 1985 to 1994, the longest in college football history The overall Graduation Success Rate (percentage-wise) recorded by University of Miami athletic teams for 2011 (highest ever in UM history and 13th best nationally in 2011) The number of UM players selected in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft (the most ever in the first round of a single NFL Draft)
4 Continuing a Winning Tradition Behind every face mask and underneath each University of Miami athletic uniform exists a Hurricanes studentathlete with the same aspirations as any college student: achieving good grades and earning a four-year degree. Our student-athletes are just that students first, athletes second. Consistently high marks on the annual Academic Progress Rate report (979 in 2010) among our 17 varsity athletic teams is testament to that fact. The Hurricane Club enables our student-athletes to achieve peak performance both academically and athletically. Our goals for 2012: n Raise 10.1 million for scholarship support n Increase Hurricane Club membership to 5,500 active members n Achieve a 40 percent participation rate among active members in the 40for40 Campaign in honor of the Hurricane Club s 40th anniversary, with each member increasing his or her annual gift by 40 A N N U A L G I V I N G Emerging from the traditional smoke: Head Coach Al Golden and the Hurricanes football team.
