2 Welcome! Neighborcare Health at West Seattle High is a fullservice health clinic that provides medical and mental health services for students of West Seattle High. Funding for the Health Center is partially supported by the Families and Education Levy and the City of Seattle. Neighborcare Health staff work in partnership with the school nurse at the Health Center site. Where? Neighborcare Health at West Seattle High is located across from the main office of West Seattle High. When? Neighborcare Health at West Seattle High provides services to all students on weekdays before, during and after school hours. To schedule an appointment please call or stop by the office. The Health Center is closed during school holidays and summer break. When Neighborcare Health at West Seattle High is closed, students and their families are encouraged to call a Neighborcare Health clinic for medical, dental and mental health services. The closest clinic to West Seattle High is Neighborcare Health at High Point, Students and their families are also welcome at any of our Seattle clinic locations (see back cover). Why? Our purpose is to help students do better in school by working to solve medical, dental and mental health problems, preventing serious illness, and promoting healthy lifestyles. We are part of Neighborcare Health, a network of medical, dental, and school-based clinics, serving more than 55,000 patients in Seattle each year. Neighborcare Health is committed to creating a health care home and encouraging long-term relationships between patients and providers that include medical, dental and mental health care. A home is where the heart is a welcoming, supportive place that provides peace of mind. At Neighborcare Health, we believe that everyone deserves and needs a place to call home, regardless of income or insurance status. A health care home is where a team of medical, dental and mental health professionals works in collaboration with each patient to develop a personal health improvement plan. It s a place where we encourage long-term relationships with patients and care for them from birth through end of life. No matter which Neighborcare Health clinic patients visit, we want them to feel at home.

3 What services are offered to students? Services offered at West Seattle High include: n Evaluation and treatment of common health problems n Sports physicals n Preventative health care n Reproductive health n Immunizations n Individual, family and group mental health counseling n Family coordination to establish health care home n Insurance eligibility and enrollment assistance n Crisis intervention n Community and school-based referrals n Health promotion and health education Dental services Any student who is registered as a patient at the Health Center can access Neighborcare Health dental services at any of our dental clinics throughout Seattle. The closest dental clinic to the school is Neighborcare Health at High Point. Call to schedule a dental appointment. How can students use the center? Register! Students must register with Neighborcare Health at West Seattle High in order to receive care. A complete registration form with parent or guardian signature is all that is needed to access all of the services offered. Students 18 years old and over can sign registration forms themselves. Under Washington state law, students under 18 can register themselves for confidential care, including reproductive health services and mental health counseling. Request to Report slips are given for appointments during school. We will do everything possible to schedule or reschedule so students miss as little class as possible. Students may also visit the clinic without an appointment by getting a pass from their teacher or a referral from the school nurse. What is the cost? Our intention is to reduce as many barriers as possible to accessing medical, dental and mental health services. No student will be denied services due to inability to pay. Because the Families and Education Levy covers only a portion of the costs to operate the Health Center, we bill insurance companies when possible. We have Eligibility Specialists who work in all of our sites to assist families and students to enroll in health insurance programs. We accept a wide variety of health insurance plans, including Washington Apple Health (Medicaid) and bill them directly for services. Lab services for non-confidential services are billed to the student s health insurance by LabCorp. There are no co-pays associated with receiving services at the Health Center, so we do not collect payment at the time of the appointment. 4 Meet our staff We are delighted to be part of the West Seattle High community. Please stop by and say hello! Johanna Fischer, Clinic Coordinator BA, of Rochester Before joining Neighborcare Health Johanna worked as an educator for youth in various parts of Latin America, teaching English in Ecuador and Mexico and leading high school community service trips in Costa Rica, Peru and Ecuador. She loves speaking Spanish and harnessing the power of cultural exchange and sensitivity to further growth and understanding. Johann is originally from the Boston area. In her spare time she enjoys yoga, biking and hiking anything outdoors. She also loves reading Latin American literature, fantasy novels and nonfiction. I absolutely love everything about Neighborcare s Based Health Centers. Having access to care right at school makes the health care experience more accessible and personal for each patient and allows students not only to feel that they have the control to advocate for their own health needs, but also support when they need it, at school, every day. The opportunity to help students further their success and empower their own lives is a daily inspiration for me. Katherine Acker, MPH Health Educator BS, Marymount MPH, of Washington Katie enjoys working with individuals, families and communities to provide health education and resources. She has worked in many places including the Dominican Republic, where she served as a community health Peace Corps volunteer. She speaks Spanish, loves eating and is a dedicated long-distance runner. Auky Van Beek, PA-C BS, Louisiana State BA, of Washington Physician Assistant Certificate, of Washington Auky has worked for Neighborcare Health since she graduated from PA school in 1997 the first nine years at Rainier Beach Medical Clinic, followed by several years at Madison Middle, and now at West Seattle High. She has extensive training in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, a research-based program for adults and teens that has shown benefits in attention, reactivity, anxiety, depression and chronic pain. Auky is a first-generation American of Dutch descent who was born and raised in Louisiana. She s lived in Seattle since She loves training Sunny, her standard poodle, gardening, hiking, yoga and cross country skiing. I love working with teens as part of a dedicated team offering the best care available anywhere. I love Neighborcare Health s commitment to offering health care to those who might otherwise not have access. Loretta Baud, LMHC BSW, Texas State MACP, The Seattle Loretta is a mental health therapist with six years of postgraduate counseling experience and 10 years of school based work. Loretta has worked in Seattle Public s with children of all ages. She is trained in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and enjoys working with adolescents with a variety of issues that are impacting their ability to be successful at school, home, or with their peers. Loretta appreciates working in schools where she is able to interact with students in their domain. Loretta enjoys riding her bike, running, climbing and yoga in her free time. She also loves spending time exploring the PNW with her friends. Working with adolescents while they are in the midst of finding who they are as individuals is one of the most rewarding things about my work. I am always amazed at how much insight they have into their own lives. I am always learning from them. Reina Galvez, Mental Health Therapist BSW, Heritage, 2005 MSW, Walla Walla, 2006 Reina is a mental health therapist with special training in trauma, children s health and crisis intervention. Before joining Neighborcare Health, Reina worked at Sea Mar Community Health Center and King County Juvenile Detention Center. Originally from eastern Washington, Reina moved to the Seattle area in In her spare time she enjoys yoga, kickboxing and spending time with friends and family. Reina is also fluent in Spanish. I work at Neighborcare Health because of the population we serve and our mission. I find it rewarding and satisfying to know that I am helping support this work.
