In August of 1999, GRI officially established itself and announced its purpose to educate the African American community about the importance of protecting themselves against HIV/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Because of the disproportionate percentage of African Americans who are infected and affected with HIV/AIDS, GRI saw the need to be proactive and address the issue with education and HIV testing. GRI has a phenomenal record of empowering the underserved and difficult to serve individuals through education, mentoring, strengthening and support. HOPE also operates the statewide HIV/Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Resource Hotline, provides Hepatitis education and testing, and conducts a variety of outreach efforts focusing on men, women, and underserved populations. Clients must be over the age of 13 and not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. There is a fee for the rapid and oral HIV testing. HIV antibody blood test is free. Admiral Pl., Tulsa, OK Phone: ; Food Pantry: Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 9am-5pm Tulsa CARES was founded in 1991, in direct response to the growing need for compassionate care for those affected by HIV/AIDS. Community leaders came together and developed a one-stop source plan to respond to the AIDS epidemic. This model brought all of the social services together under one roof which helped to reduce the fragmentation, encouraged collaboration and cooperation among providers and eased the burden on clients and family members. The Tulsa CARES model developed as a result of a community needs assessment study conducted by the Community Service Council of Tulsa, and was replicated throughout communities across the country.
