Background and previos work Melhus Several (7-8) buildings use groundwater for heating and cooling. No or limited use of hydrogeologists in the planning, pre-investigation and construction phase for the groundwater-based heat pump installations. NGU contacted by a «concerned» driller company. Marine deposits covering the sand and gravel (river and glacial) deposits. Large depths (>100 m). Two master thesises started 2014 and completed May Elverum Mapping of the ground source heat potential by use of groundwater from quaternary deposits by NGU in Minor use of the groundwater resource for heating and cooling. District heating based on wood chippings. River and glacial deposits (sand) to a limited depth, ca m.

Elverum - ground source heat potential using groundwater from quaternary deposits Ground source heat plants in Melhus Infiltration wells Production wells By Mari Helen Rise (2015) and Marit Førde (2015) 7

Project details Financing: 6 MNOK from Regional Research Fund Mid- Norway 2 MNOK self-financing by partners (man-hours) PhD-funding. SOposition from the Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology, NTNU (SO = strategy and adaption fund). Project period: Focus areas: The central part of Melhus and Elverum Project owner: Melhus municipality Project leader: NTNU Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources Engineering

Main goal To provide a solid and sustainable basis for an optimal use and management of the groundwater resources for heating and cooling purposes in the central part of Melhus and Elverum. The knowledge gained, will be used in other municipalities with similar groundwater resources. 9

Part goals 3D-mapping and evaluation of the groundwater resource in the central part of Melhus and Elverum. Geographical mapping of the heating and cooling demand and the corresponding potential for using groundwater for energy purposes. Evaluation of different technological and economical strategies and structures for commercial use of the local groundwater resource for delivery of heating and cooling. Manual for robust operation and procedures to avoid problems with iron and manganese oxides. Need for clear juridical regulations. Educate a doctorate candidate and 7 master students. 10

Some activites Fall 2015 to be contiued in 2016: Collecting of field data Geophysical investigations georadar and resistivity Extensive drilling programme at strategic locations Test pumping Ongoing project- and master thesises. Collection of operational data from existing plants Start PhD-work Start 3D-model for Melhus and Elverum 11

Some results from Melhus FEFLOW-model - Based on quaternary model. - Temperature decrease around the wells in the gravel-layer 6 years after start. - Groundwater movement towards north (to the sea) in the lower layers. - Several uncertainties - A regional temperature decrease? From Førde 2015

Some results from Melhus continues Filter depth in the production wells - 8 plants in operation (yellow) in central Melhus - Filter depth increases towards southwest. - Total extraction rate of groundwater is 80 l/s Production wells Infiltration wells Buildings heated From Riise 2015

Temperature Some results from Melhus continues Air temperature Infiltration well Production well Month From Riise 2015

Groundwater level (relative height) Flow Gaulfoss daily mean Some results from Melhus continues Groundwater level at Melhuset and flow in the river Gaula at Gaulfoss in 2011 Groundwater level Flow Date By Mari Helen From Rise og Riise Randi Kalskin 2015 Ramstad Based on data from Rolf Aune and from NVE
