From sketches in Stockholm to fabrics for the home In April 2010, IKEA textile product developer Emma Jones joined students of Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm for a workshop that encouraged the art of surprise and creation. Led by illustrator and graphic designer Laurie Rosenwald, the students made hundreds of sketches that IKEA turned into metre fabrics and other textiles (with the students consent, of course). Always seeking innovative thinking and ways of working, collaboration is nothing new at IKEA. Since 1994, design students from many countries have come to Älmhult for five month stays, working together with in-house designers. This project further extends the IKEA philosophy of working together, since this is the first college to be accredited with an IKEA product. Founded in 1939 by Anders Beckman, a renowned Swedish advertising illustrator and exhibition designer, Beckmans College of Design is known for its innovative education pushing students to be communicative and creative. 3

4 Students of the three-year practical and theoretical college are admitted based on given assignments, without academic prerequisites. Its study programmes of visual communication, fashion design and product design produce art directors, interior designers, fashion designers, illustrators, artists, stylists, costume designers, editors, authors, stage designers and more. Many Beckmans graduates have become IKEA designers, like: Sissi Edholm, Magnus Elebäck, Eva Lilja Löwenhielm, Chris Martin, Helen Trast, Lisa Ullenius, Ola Whilborg, and more. Another graduate, Tom Hedqvist, is now the principal of Beckmans College of Design and a freelance IKEA designer. Hedqvist s design accomplishments have their own worldwide recognition, as one of the original founders and three remaining owners of 10-Gruppen. What began in 1970 as a place for 10 young textile designers to collaborate and control the creation process from sketch to fabric, 10-Gruppen is now a staple of Swedish design available throughout Europe, Asia and the USA in a range of products from bags to plates. Collaboration and communication is crucial at Beckmans College of Design, Tom says. For students from different disciplines, for teachers and visiting guests, the constant exchange of ideas and opinions creates an informal atmosphere that is simply wonderful. Tom Hedqvist, principal of Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm, helps students prepare for the day s activities. About Beckmans College of Design Founded 1939 by Anders Beckman (b. 1907, d. 1967) Three-year theoretical and practical college Three study programmes of visual communication, fashion design and product design Teachers must be working in the business and work closely with students. Students develop personal expression while working in cooperation with others across disciplines. Curriculum based on a fundamental creative attitude of communicating and creating The college retains an almost ferocious creative freedom and close contact with the commercial market. Beckman was a pioneering illustrator, poster and exhibition designer. He created the Swedish pavilion at the 1939 New York World s Fair. He is also famous for the marketing material of Helsingborg, Sweden s H55 exhibition in

5 The students worked all day, creating sketches, patterns and textures under Rosenwald s direction. T he collaboration began during the workshop weekend, when New York-based illustrator and graphic designer Laurie Rosenwald held a reorganised version of her How to Make Mistakes on Purpose workshop. Following her flow and encouragement of the random, the 22 students created hundreds of black and white sketch pages using paints, pens, markers, pencils, ink, cut paper and the like. Many wearing black plastic trash bags to shield their clothes from creativity, the students were busy and dedicated. The free-flowing, raw atmosphere is seen in one final metre fabric, JULITA, where an elephant, eyeglasses and a cake show themselves harmoniously side-by-side. As each sketch paper was filled, Emma and other volunteers photographed the sketches to make a digital archive. After a day s work, the sketch papers went onto the walls of another room for a celebration and viewing of the joint effort. During the viewing, Emma announced IKEA would turn the sketches into textiles. The next day, students worked with the digital archive to create patterns. After a number of hours, everyone gathered to present and discuss the patterns before agreeing that Emma would be the final person to create the fabrics. It was a really new way of working, Emma says. It s not very often that you get that luxury to take people s work and use it how you like. She then brought the sketches back to her IKEA office in Älmhult, using her knowledge to arrange and develop the patterns into textiles true to IKEA. 5

6 When Emma first went through the digital archive of sketches, she worked for three or four weeks, examining images, cutting them out in Photoshop and grouping them into categories like the alphabet, moving people, faces and textures. Some of the final fabrics like MADDE, LILLIVI and DURITA came from the workshop s second day, as the patterns were more complete. With DURITA, the original sketch of a line of people attracted Emma, who felt it was almost finished and very much composed. I liked the feeling of it with the people standing in a row, she says. It reminded me of the train station or just different types of people. I liked the simplicity of it. To finalize the fabric, she put the sketched people into more of a repeat, added contrast and chose the colours. As evidenced in EDMA and GULLVI, Emma was also drawn to faces. For me with the faces and the people, I felt that kind of encapsulated the workshop, the many faces of the students and of IKEA being a global company. Faces are also a new step for IKEA. We haven t had anything with faces on it before, she says. For Emma, who has worked with textiles for more than 10 years, making patterns from other people s sketches was a challenge and a privilege. When it came to going through the work and what could be used, that was actually a very hard decision, she says. As a designer it s very much about the individual and thinking about your expression and your taste. That was actually what was really fun to create something from a starting point that you don t normally start from. Though the collaboration extends beyond metre fabrics into bed textiles and shower curtains, Emma wishes the collection could be even larger to reflect the entirety of the students creations. Really this is just a drop in the ocean of the stuff and variety we got, she says. PE

7 PE PE PE PE PE PE PE PE This August, from the ocean of sketches created by students of Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm, IKEA releases six new metre fabrics: MADDE, EDMA, GULLVI, LILLIVI, JULITA and DURITA. Made of 100% cotton, these 150cm fabrics are priced from $5.95 to $14.95 per metre and feature an inventive blend of striking colors, memorable faces, bold patterns and little symbols of everyday life. I think specifically the fabrics at IKEA are known for strong design and being original, says Emma. We wanted to build on that with a slightly different twist. In addition to metre fabrics, the collaboration extends to SANDGRUND shower curtain in 100% polyester and EIVOR ORD, a 100% cotton quilt cover and pillowcase set displaying the Swedish alphabet from A to Ö. 1.
