3 publisher s letter How we did it L ook around New Jersey and you can tell which sectors are growing. Solar energy, for example, has boomed over the last few years. But as you will see from this year s list of the fastest growing companies, growth can come in any industry, from banking to pet food. Winners on the 2011 NJBIZ New Jersey s Fifty Fastest Growing Companies list face the same challenges as everyone else. But they face them with a confidence that says any hurdle can be cleared. And they are making plans for the future, knowing that companies with vision will find opportunity. The companies profiled in these pages hail from a variety of sectors, reflecting New Jersey s business diversity. But they share many of the same qualities, including perseverance and creativity in meeting challenges. They have not been afraid to try new things or stick to the tried and true. This year s top-ranked company, Atlantic Coast Media Group, is no stranger to the list. And its story shows why: The company is continuing to reinvest in its business, its products and its people. New names joining New Jersey s Fifty Fastest include SunDurance Energy at No. 6, The Bank of Princeton at No. 15 and Burpee Materials Technology at No. 32. Turnover on the list demonstrates an important truth of business: Leadership today is no guarantee of leadership tomorrow. Nonetheless, the companies of New Jersey s Fifty Fastest have proven their ability to sustain growth, and that is why I congratulate all of them, as well as their leaders and their employees. Thomas F. Curtin I n order to qualify for this program, a company had to nominate itself or be nominated by another company. Applicants were required to supply four years of revenue information, demonstrate revenue of at least $500,000 for each year and show increasing revenue overall from year 1 to year 4. Companies were ranked by dollar growth from year 1 to year 4. The company with the largest dollar growth received the highest ranking, with the second company receiving the second-highest ranking, and the other companies following. Rankings were then assigned for the percentage of growth from year 1 to year 4. Here again, the company with the largest percentage growth was assigned the highest ranking. Ranking numbers for dollar and percentage growth were then totaled. The company with the highest combined ranking was then ranked No. 1, with the other companies following in order. In cases where there was a tie, the company with the highest dollar growth received the higher ranking. MAILING ADDRESS 220 Davidson Ave., Suite 302 Somerset, NJ (732) PUBLISHER Thomas F. 6 5 DIVERSANT. Red Bank, Monmouth County Information Technology Gene C. Waddy CEO 7 E xcellence and relevance are keys to growth at DIVERSANT, an African-American-owned IT staffing firm serving Fortune 1000 clients. Excellence stems from the firm s consultative approach, which entails listening to clients and aligning services and products to meet their needs. Relevance is an offshoot of the firm s investment in building a diverse team to serve companies diversifying their workforces and supply chains. Founded in 2005, DIVERSANT takes pride in resolving critical issues for clients rather than acting simply as a commodity supplier. Artech Information Systems LLC Cedar Knolls, Morris County Information Technology Ranjini Poddar President A n economy plagued by downsizing and layoffs does not offer prime conditions for growth of a staffing firm. Artech Information Systems, a minority- and woman-owned IT staffing company, countered by offering its clients a variety of workforce solutions. The company has not only survived the downturn, it has thrived. And it expects growth to continue despite fierce market competition and the unpredictable economic climate. Founded in 1992, Artech also offers consulting and outsourced project services. 6 SunDurance Energy, LLC Edison, Middlesex County Solar Energy Al Bucknam CEO 8 S undurance spun out of construction firm The Conti Group in 2007 to pursue solar projects. While the work was new, the approach was not. SunDurance adopted the same practices that have made Conti a national leader and applied them to the burgeoning field of solar energy development in New Jersey and beyond. Nearly five years later, the result is a fast-growing company that designs, builds and operates megawatt-scale solar projects for commercial, industrial, government and utility clients throughout North America. Bio-Reference Laboratories, Inc. Elmwood Park, Bergen County Health Care Dr. Marc Grodman Chairman, President and CEO A lot of people look for answers. Bio-Reference Laboratories has thrived on looking for questions not just any questions, but the clinical questions that doctors and their patients need to have answered. Bio-Reference meets the need by developing tests based on innovative technologies. Founded in 1981, Bio-Reference is a clinical testing laboratory with a focus on esoteric testing, molecular diagnostics, anatomical pathology, women s health, and correctional health care. The company operates a national oncology laboratory under the name GenPath. Achieving Every DayTM 10 l Fifty Fastest Growing New Jersey Companies l 2011
