Specifically, this curse is designed t expse students t the methds, theries, research findings, and issues regarding emplyee perfrmance in rganizatins. At the end f the semester, students can be expected t have a grasp f hw t design and implement perfrmance management systems. The class will cnsist f a cmbinatin f lectures, class discussins and analysis f readings and cases. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. T expse students t fundamental theries and best practices in perfrmance management. 2. T illustrate the dynamic nature f perfrmance management thrugh the presentatin f new ideas and cntrversial issues. 3. T prvide a frum fr students t discuss persnal experiences as they relate t perfrmance management practices in rganizatins. 4. T prvide students with the pprtunity t use the knwledge acquired in class in the design f a perfrmance management system. 5. Case Reprt.Yu are required t wrk members f yur team in rder t answer case questins. Each team is expected t a case reprt that includes the fllwing: (a) summary f the majr issues in the case and (b) answers t the case questins fllwing the case. Each team shuld cmplete its case reprt prir t the day the case is discussed in class. The case reprts shuld be typed and shuld nt exceed five t seven duble-spaced pages. In rder t receive maximum credit n its case reprt students shuld d the fllwing: 1. crrectly identify the majr issues in the case 2. crrectly use and interpret case facts 3. prvide cmpelling ratinale using curse materials and readings fr answers t questins 4. submit well-written case reprts that are free frm typs and missing wrds in sentences Class Participatin: Yur participatin pints will be based n attendance thrughut the semester and the quality f yur participatin in class discussins f the articles and cases. Team Prject: Backgrund Infrmatin: In rder t give students hands-n experience students are given an pprtunity t cmplete a team prject. Yur team is t assume the rle f aperfrmance ManagementCnsulting grup. Its task is t design a perfrmance management system. Student teams will play the rle f a perfrmance management cnsulting grup attempting t sell its perfrmance management system. The rest f the class will play the rle f members f the rganizatin ptentially interested in purchasing yur system. Chice f Jb and Organizatin: Each team will chse a jb fr which the perfrmance managementsystem will be used. Yur chsen jb shuld be apprved by me befre yu begin t wrk n yur prject. Inadditin t chsing a jb, yu will chse an actual cmpany that includes such a jb. This will help yuwith the strategic planning prtin f the prpsal. 2

3 Prject Cmpnents: At a minimum, the prpsed system shuld include the fllwing cmpnents: Strategic Planning: This cmpnent requires that yu find the existing strategic plan fr the cmpany yuhave selected (e.g., visin, missin statement, strategy). A gd place t find a cmpany s strategic plan isits hme page n the Web r in the cmpany s annual reprt. Read the strategic plan and describe hw yuwill link it t yur perfrmance management system. Hw will yur system be designed s that thecmpany s visin, missin, and strategies are met? Jb Descriptin: This cmpnent requires that yu write a jb descriptin r revise an existing ne fr thejb yu have selected. Be sure t include a brief descriptin f the jb, task statements, and knwledge,skills, and abilities. Results: This cmpnent requires that yu write accuntabilities, bjectives, and perfrmance standardsfr yur jb based n the strategic plan and the jb descriptin. Behavirs: This cmpnent requires that yu write cmpetencies fr yur jb based n the strategic planand the jb descriptin. Perfrmance Appraisal Frm: This cmpnent requires that yu design the appraisal frm and ratingschemes. Perfrmance Appraisal Discussin: This cmpnent requires that yu describe hw appraisal discussinswill be cnducted and the lgistics f the meeting. Hw ften will yu meet? Will yu use self-appraisals?what will yu discuss in the meeting (e.g., past perfrmance, pay, develpment)? Emplyee Develpment: This cmpnent requires that yu describe hw yu will develp yuremplyees. Will yu use 360-degree feedback? Will yu design individual develpment plans? Includeany frms that yu will use. Training: This cmpnent requires that yu prpse what types f training will be prvided and t whm.als, this requires that yu utline the training sessin. Written Prpsal: Each team is asked t write a prpsal summarizing the abve cmpnents f the suggested system.prpsals shuld als include the fllwing: a statement f needs (i.e., why is a new perfrmance management systemneeded?) a recmmended wrk plan, benefits, pricing (bth labr and materials, and pricing assumptins) atimeline, and a statement f qualificatins (e.g., shrt bigraphical infrmatin regarding each f thecnsultants). Team Prject Grading Criteria Yur team prject is wrth a ttal f 60 pints. The grade is calculated based n the fllwing criteria: Cntent (45 pints) - Extent t which yur team s prject meets the requirements described in this dcument. The frmat and appearance f the prpsals are imprtant aspects t be cnsidered. There are minimum r maximum length requirements fr the prpsal. The paper shuld be landscaped, dubled spaced, in 12 pint fnt f yur chice (Times New Rman r Arial are preferred). Use an Appendix fr sample materials, PwerPint slides, etc. Ten percent f yur grade n the prpsal paper will be based n the quality f yur writing: Grammar, spelling, presentatin, etc. Presentatin Delivery (15 pints) Extent t which the prject presentatin 3

4 is well-rganized with a lgical flw uses visual aids that are clear, supprt the cntent, and free frm grammatical errrs is well-rehearsed, i.e., demnstrates adequate preparatin and meets the time limit is delivered with effective audience engagement (vice prjectin, enthusiasm, eye cntact) includes effective respnses t questins frm the audience is cmpleted within minutes (**Every team member des nt have t present). Peer evaluatin: Each student will als cnduct a peer evaluatin f ther teams fr use in determining team presentatin grades. Yu will have apprximately 5 minutes t present t the class. Each presentatin shuld include the fllwing: (1) a brief summary/discussin f the article, (2) a discussin f why yu believe the article is relevant fr yu and yur classmates prfessinal careers, and (3) the article shuld directly relate t the bk chapter(s) and/r tpic(s) discussed n the day in which the news item is presented. Please als d the fllwing: (1) be sure t cmmunicate s that yur classmates learn the infrmatin that yu discuss in yur article, (2) make certain that yur presentatin includes 2-3 PwerPint slides that are easy t read, and (3) make certain that yu indicate the surce f the article n yur first slide. Expectatins The expectatins fr this curse are the fllwing: 1. Preparatin. Each student needs t read the assigned material and participate in class discussin. 2. Respect. Bth the instructr and the students must treat each ther with the utmst respect. Disagreement will be encuraged thrughut the curse, but respect fr thers is a key tenet f tday s wrkplace and shuld be practiced in class discussins. 3. Prfessinalism. Students shuld cnduct all cmmunicatin (including ) with a prfessinal tne and style. This is a must in the business wrld and as such will be expected fr this curse. 4. Quality.
