2014 KetaKeti School project Nepal Hostel students, Who are climbing the hill from the city for a better education at Melamchi Ghyang School. They are from 10 different districts of Nepal

KetaKeti school project Nepal Introduction The Melamchi Ghyang School is situated at 2,600m on the Lap of the Himalayan range of the Langtang Lerung in the Helambu region and was founded in 1985 AD from a small private home with 19 children. The school has currently 250 children with 16 teachers and boarding accommodation for resident children. This Community based Government school provides education from Kindergarten to grade 10. Basic level education is free, whilst secondary level is running by collaboration with the Government and various organizations. for extra information Goal & Achievements Purna Gautam, Founder & Head Master, explains: We wanted to have a model school in the region - and the country -, as well as help the Himalayan people to improve its daily life. To achieve this we needed a total buy-in from all concerned, so a PTA (Parents Teachers Association) was formed. School Management and PTA fully subscribe our ambitions. Through hard work and motivation we can proudly say that our school is now recognized by the Nepalese Government as the first model school of Sindhupalchok district. Our students regularly come out on top in the Government organized examinations. At the same time the school has had a positive impact on the local economy: people are now more literate and are able to make a living closer to home. We even have now more local agricultural production. And villagers can also sell those products to the hostel. As for educational results: Over 500 students went or are currently going through our school Since the SLC exams started (8 years) 100 students passed these tests 4 students continue(d) university in Europe 10 students went to Bangalore (India) for a civil engineering degree Some 20 students study/studied at Kathmandu State. KetaKeti Mission KetaKeti has developed a somewhat unique approach to solidarity with the developing world. The basic rationale is that after primary necessities (food, housing and health) education is the single most important requirement. Education is the most important means of transferring

knowledge. It also makes people more free and enterprising. The ultimate goal is to make people and societies strong enough to survive by themselves. Most charities tend to invest in hardware: buildings, equipment, etc. KetaKeti has invested in the software : the teachers. It allowed the Melamchi Ghyang School to kick start its development from its humble origins to its present state. In the meantime the school expansion also warrants some infrastructure projects. For KetaKeti Belgium the focus remains on the quality of education. Thank you for the past help It would not have happened, Purna Gautam says without the magnificent support of KetaKeti Belgium, CAN (Community Action Nepal), the Nepalese Government and other organizations. Solidarity between people, across cultures and great distances has produced wonderful results. A very heartfelt and warm thank you to the many donors! Current situation KetaKeti Belgium provides for the salaries of 5 teachers, the Nepalese government for 9 teachers, and CAN and NBA (Nepalese Buddhist Association) one each. On top, KetaKeti also supplements the salaries of the 9 government teachers. This is an annual amount of just under For the current year we are still short of Basic education is free, resident students cover its costs and parents pay for stationary, books, uniforms and the likes. School starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m. Uniforms are compulsory for both students and teachers. There are two holiday periods: October & July 20 th till August 18 th. Five of the teachers are also resident and look after the children in the hostel, assisted by two cooks and a matron. In the framework of improving the School s science levels, KetaKeti is currently supporting Sarki, a former pupil and teacher, in getting his Bachelor s Degree in Science in Kathmandu. After completing his studies, he will come back to the school and serve at least another 5 years. To improve the school s food supplies, KetaKeti is also sponsoring two students, Sonam and Ashok with their 15 month agriculture training. After an additional 3 month traineeship, they will return to the village and propose how to support the school as well as the local community for the next 3 years. Future The communities are happy because their children now get a good education near home. When their children graduate and receive their SLC (School Living Certificate, 10 th grade),

parents often become more inquisitive and motivated for the postsecondary education of the children. We are motivated to continue to give the best possible education and create an environment to achieve this, we also have to find the means to extend the postsecondary classes. And while doing so, help to improve the life in the village. Next Steps We want to look ahead and think of the following items to improve the school towards selfsufficiency, efficiency and quality: Teaching methodology (estimated at 1,000) Education is continuously developing and we need to teach the teachers in order to maintain even more, improve - the current standard. We also need to look at education outside the region and even outside Nepal. The costs cover the hire of coaches & experts and the organizing of courses. Digital education systems (no quantification) A Bengali American, Salman Khan accidentally developed an educational system (Khan Academy) based on YouTube movies that is revolutionizing education in some parts of the world. IT infrastructure is a challenge for this. The internet access in the village will be not performant enough for at least the next few years. In the meantime it might be possible to download courses onto DVD or CD-ROM disks that can be shown on a TV or a computer in the village. Audiovisual and music (estimated at 1,200) A music class helps to develop the children. It is one of the cheapest forms of art and art is an essential part of humanity. A linked item is audiovisuals in the classroom. This is needed for the previous item (digital education), but also forms integral part of modern educational systems. Science classes lab (estimated at 900) Advancing any society in the 21 st century involves science. Science has been the basis for economic success throughout the history of man. For basic science a lab is a requirement. One can show some experiments in audiovisual systems, but one also needs hands-on experience for deep understanding. The current lab facilities are very limited and also some work needs to be done to ensure everyone s safety. Teaching materials (estimated at 1,100) We could improve on some teaching materials and classroom furniture. In each class and in the teacher s room we need more storage space and lockers. Additional classrooms (estimated at 3,000 per classroom) There is still some work left for additional classrooms and the finishing of the library. The school has been very successful and that means more pupils and consequently at least two

classrooms will need to be built in the (near) future. These classrooms will be bigger than the current ones to enhance the school s efficiency. Vocational classrooms (estimated at 2,100) Vocational training requires an entirely different type of classroom. Especially skills like carpentry, plumbing and electricity are needed. Carpentry, furniture making and cabinet building are needed for local and tourist use. Plumbing is essential for health (water & sewage). And electricity is becoming a daily necessity everywhere in the world. Even in the Himalaya s Compound wall (estimated at 7,000) The compound wall needs to be finished. The cattle in Nepal is always free roaming in the villages, and that is a problem for the school s vegetable garden. Heating system and insulation of the hostel (estimated at 6,000) At the moment there is no heating system in the school, nor hostel. Winter temperatures are at this height on average minus 10 C. Children now sleep directly under the tin roof exposed to the elements. And also the study and dining rooms are not heated nor insulated. The plan is to make special covers for the roof, acting as an insulation and extra protection, and purchase a heater that can use locally sourced fuel. Orphans and poor families (estimated at 2,000 per annum) The school has always had attention for the poor and destitute. The lack of parents or their economic situation is never the fault of the child. We feel it is our obligation to provide for these children. We would like to extend this support towards our brightest students for continued education. Schoolyard pavement (estimation depends on solution) The schoolyard (70m by 30m) has a problem of erosion with every monsoon. The initial idea was to use local stones and masonry, which is a very expensive solution ( ). We are looking at alternatives. Postsecondary school (no estimation yet available) This is a big-ticket item, but very important. The Nepalese government has reformed the education curriculum and has made postsecondary education (grades 11 & 12) very prominent. We already started to prepare for this extension in the school s curriculum, but we think we need to look for a better alternative involving cooperation with other schools. Today all our graduated students have to go Kathmandu to complete their education to the required 12 th grade. This is very expensive for the parents and the quality is very uneven. Also a major city is not always the ideal environment for education. The idea is to set up a new school outside Kathmandu in cooperation with other schools with the same problem.
