1 Bargainers: Bring your rookies, your veterans (and your issues) down to Florida for a few days to stretch your skills and take advantage of some professional training, followed by professional facilitation/coaching as you get your 2015 bargaining underway. Who should attend: Bargaining Committee Members Business Managers and Agents Contractors Chapter Executives For 15 years, Mike Gaffney has been providing SMACNA and SMART with collective bargaining training in the form of a two-day Interest-Based Bargaining course. We will be offering that opportunity again in 2015, but with a new twist. Immediately following the training, Mike will work directly with bargaining teams as they get their negotiations off the ground before returning home. Each paired bargaining group will be provided its own space, with Mike observing and coaching to insure that the lessons learned in the just-concluded training are experienced and reinforced in practice. Talk about just-in-time training! For some of you, this presents an opportunity to refine and improve an already efficient and effective bargaining tradition. For others, it is a chance to make a break with the past, to dramatically revamp an ineffective process that has produced mediocre solutions along with strained relationships. You know you might be in this latter camp if: Your negotiations begin slow, drag on with a fair amount of non-productive, repetitive talk, and then end in a flurry of not-so so-great compromise agreements You jump from one issue to another (and then back again) repeating much the same information (and attitudes) without gaining much ground You have negotiated provisions in the past that are not actually used in practice The same issues keep coming up contract after contract Bargainers (and constituents) do not look forward to the process and are not optimistic as to outcomes

2 The version of interest based negotiation that Mike teaches is designed such that the assistance of a third party facilitator is not required. It is expected that the parties will facilitate themselves, either by having one or more agents on the bargaining teams do double-duty, or by making use of a member contractor or local union official who, though not a neutral, has no bargaining responsibilities in this particular negotiation. Mike will expect you to nominate one or more of your negotiators to play this role on the last day and a half, but if you think you may want to employ a non-bargaining internal facilitator(s) in your negotiation, be sure to bring these individuals with your teams. Prior to Spring Training, Mike will be working with participants via phone and to assist them in constructing their agendas before arrival in Florida. That way, little time will be spent on administrative matters on-site and substantive bargaining can begin right after the training. In this seminar, you will learn how to approach bargaining in project-management mode a clear notion of what the beginning, middle and end activities will look like and a schedule to follow. You will know where you are at on each issue and on the agenda as a whole at all times. Before you leave Florida to resume your negoti- ations back home, you will have constructed a progress matrix for your entire agenda and you will have worked through to completion at least one and possibly as many as three issues. You will be leaving Florida with. A little more about Mike Gaffney... Dr. Michael Gaffney retired from the faculty at Cornell University s Programs for Employment and Workplace Systems (a consulting, research, and teaching arm of the School of Industrial and Labor Relations). A graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Dr. Gaffney worked for several years as a licensed officer and pilot aboard deep-sea and Great Lakes commercial vessels (Masters, Mates & Pilots, MM&P-ILA, and Marine Engineers Beneficial Association, MEBA). He later became an anthropologist (MA New School for Social Research, Ph.D. Ohio State University), and it was during a study of merchant seamen in Europe that he was introduced to the field of work redesign and employee involvement, his subsequent specialization. While at Cornell, and thereafter, Dr. Gaffney has focused his research and teaching on organizational change in shoreside industries, particularly with regard to the negotiation of change. He has provided in-house negotiation training, consulting, and facilitation services to over 500 companies and unions throughout North America and overseas. To date, Dr. Gaffney s 15 minutes of fame consists of having been an expert witness in the civil trial of the grounding of the Exxon Valdez.
