2 Student Application Deadline is February 18, 2011 The Graduate Student Internship Program (GSIP) provides technical assistance to state and localities while offering graduate students handson training in maternal and child health epidemiology. For over 10 years, GSIP interns have had the opportunity to work with health agencies across the country to address specific, defined data or analytic issues with the aim of developing or enhancing MCH and Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) information systems. This brochure includes a brief synopsis of the 27 GSIP summer internships available in All internships fall into the following three focus areas: Data Analysis and Monitoring Needs Assessment Program Evaluation We are now accepting applications. Please visit our site to view the full GSIP catalog of internships and apply online. Students may select up to three positions of interest. Qualified students will be matched with appropriate opportunities regardless of student or location. Deadline The submission deadline for student applications is February 18th, Matches will be announced beginning in March of Through this internship experience, I was able to merge together what I have learned in my public health program and my interests in the maternal and child health field. I also gained practical skills that I will be able to carry over into future employment and education GSIP Intern Eligibility Master s and doctoral degree candidates in U.S. schools of public health (accredited by the Council of Education for Public Health) are qualified to apply. Applicants must be enrolled in MCH studies and must not graduate before the internship ends. Only US citizens or foreign nationals who possess a visa permitting permanent residence in the United States are eligible. Time and Stipend The GSIP internship is completed over a 12 week period, to begin in May, June or July. GSIP Interns will receive a stipend of $5,000 over 3 months to cover housing and daily living expenses. 3 2011 Data Analysis and Monitoring Internships Internships with this focus may include monitoring of diseases, injuries, and health conditions for their frequency, risk factors, consequences, and health service requirements, and analysis of epidemiological data sets. Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health Programs, Los Angeles County, California Department: Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, Maternal Child and Adolescent Health (MCAH) The purpose of the internship is for the intern(s) to gain exposure and experience in MCAH research and evaluation related issues. Depending on the intern s skill, experience and interest, the student intern will be encouraged to develop his/her own analysis topics and carry out the project independently with assistance from REP Unit staff based on available data. Surveillance-Report BRFSS Child Callback Survey, Florida Department: Florida Department of Health, Family Health Services Division, Maternal and Health Practice and Analysis Unit The purpose of this internship is to analyze data from the BRFSS Child Health Callback Survey and develop a surveillance report on child health indicators and risk factors for epidemiologists and program staff. The intern will have the opportunity to develop one or more abstracts to present at the National MCH Epidemiology Conference. MCH Chronic Disease, Reproductive Health Outcomes, & Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS), Hawaii Department: Hawaii Department of Health, Family Health Services Division (FHSD) The purpose of this internship is to analyze PRAMS data to assess the associations among attendance at a postpartum visit, socioeconomic disparities, and chronic conditions or their risk factors. Products anticipated include the development of a fact sheet, an abstract, and a draft manuscript to help frame the issue in Hawaii. Developing a Profile of Infant and Child Health, Cook County, Illinois Department: Cook County Department of Public Health, Community Epidemiology and Health Planning Unit The purpose of this internship is to assist the Cook County Department of Public Health in identifying the key health and other compelling issues affecting families and their young children, to monitor trends and changes over time and to support allocation of resources and guide early childhood policy decisions in suburban Cook County. Maternal Health Indicators-Regional Profiles, Iowa Department: Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), Bureau of Family Health (BFH) The purpose of this project is to create community profiles that local health agencies can use to determine local maternal health needs, develop relevant and data driven programs, and to evaluate their programs effectiveness. The community profiles will also be used for state-level program and policy development. Geographical Analysis of Key MCH Indicators by Urban/Rural Continuum Codes, Kentucky Department: Kentucky Department for Public Health, Division of Maternal and Child Health (MCH) The purpose of this internship is to create a geographic profile of select Maternal and Child Health indicators such as preterm birth, low birth weight, prenatal care entry, smoking during pregnancy and others by urban, rural, and semi-rural status utilizing the urban/rural continuum code classification scheme. Assessment of Contraceptive Use, Contraceptive Failure and Pregnancy Intendedness in Women seeking Publicly Funded Family Planning Services, Kentucky Department: Kentucky Department for Public Health, Division of Prevention and Quality Improvement (PQI), Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) program The purpose of this internship is to assess the rate of contraceptive use, contraceptive failure and pregnancy intendedness in women who seek publicly funded family planning services in Kentucky. Interns will assist in systematic analysis of data from BRFSS, KY- PRAMS and vital records to measure preconception health indicators of women in Kentucky. Analyses of Maine s Integrated Youth Health Survey, Maine Department: Maine Center for Disease Control & Prevention, Division of Family Health, MCH Epidemiology Group The purpose of this internship is to increase understanding of key child and adolescent health issues in Maine through an analysis of Maine s 2009 Integrated Youth Health Survey (MIYHS). The goal of this internship is to disseminate information to educate the public about youth health risks, protective factors, and health concerns. Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) Analysis, Massachusetts Department: Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Bureau of Family Health and Nutrition (BFHN), Office of Data Translation (ODT) The overall purpose of the internship is use the PRAMS data to reduce infant morbidity and mortality and to promote maternal health by influencing maternal and child health programs, policies, and maternal behaviors during pregnancy and early infancy. The information from PRAMS may lead to improvement in the health of mothers and infants in Massachusetts. Childhood Obesity Data Project, Mississippi Department: Mississippi State Department of Health Office of Health Data and Research (OHDR) The purpose of the internship will be to provide experiential learning in MCH program data analysis. The intern will assess the association between neighborhood socioeconomic conditions and childhood obesity in Mississippi by analyzing data from the National Survey of Children s Health (NSCH). Adolescent Comprehensive System Initiative, Nebraska Department: Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Lifespan Health Services Unit The purpose of the internship is to develop system indicators for the Nebraska Adolescent Comprehensive System (ACS) initiative through identifying, obtaining and analyzing data. The intern will be also be fully involved in the process of identifying and, as necessary, recommending improvements and/or changes to the six adolescent comprehensive domains. Analysis and Monitoring of Perinatal Depression, Douglas County, Nebraska Department: Douglas County Health Department, Community Health and Nutrition Services Division The purpose of this project is to gain a better understanding of the covariates associated with perinatal mood disorders and improve opportunities for screening and treatment of perinatal depression or depressive symptoms of mothers residing in Douglas County. Women s Health Project, Buncombe County, North Carolina Department: Buncombe County Department of Health The purpose of the internship is to support a community planning effort to improve women s health during the childbearing years. The intern will analyze teen and women s health data and prepare a report of findings to help the community better understand contributors to health of women of childbearing age, especially focusing on unintended pregnancies. 4 Full descriptions of these internships can be found at

Investigation of Youth Choking Game Participation, Oregon Department: Oregon Public Health Division, Office of Family Health, Adolescent Health Section The purpose of this internship is to conduct multivariate analysis of the 2011 Oregon Healthy Teens data, a statewide survey of 8th and 11th grade youth on a variety of health topics, focusing on awareness of and participation in the choking game awareness and participation. The project will incorporate both quantitative and qualitative data analyses to produce a publishable paper on this topic. Three potential analyses of PRAMS data, Oregon Department: Oregon Public Health Division, Office of Family Health For this internship opportunity there are three potential analyses of Oregon PRAMS data from which the student may choose: 1) To better understand the women who have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) before, during and after pregnancy; 2) to better understand the mental health of postpartum women; or 3) to better understand the oral health of women who have recently had a live birth. Fetal/Infant Mortality Review, Waco-McLennan County, Texas Department: Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), Division of Family and Community Health Services (FCHS), Office of Program Decision Support (OPDS) The purpose of the internship is to address the issue of fetal and infant deaths in McLennan County by introducing PPOR as a tool for local use. The intern will analyze vital statistics data using the PPOR tool and participate in community involvement efforts. Surveillance of Child and Adolescent Physical Activity and Nutrition, Texas Department: Texas Department of State Health Services The purpose of this internship is to analyze data from the 4th wave of the School Physical Activity and Nutrition (SPAN) survey. The intern will select a topic for research, complete an IRB application, conduct analysis of the SPAN dataset, and complete a draft manuscript of the results for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. Using Virginia PRAMS data to assess the impact of health and social programs on birth outcomes, Virginia Department: Virginia Department of Health, Office of Family Health Services (OFHS), Policy & Assessment Unit The purpose of this internship is to analyze surveillance data from Virginia s PRAMS to evaluate whether participation in health and social programs are associated with birth outcomes for women in Virginia, specifically among vulnerable women. Analysis of Progress towards Optimal Child Development, Virginia Department: Virginia Department of Health, Office of Family Health Services (OFHS), Policy & Assessment Unit The purpose of this internship is to aid Virginia s Title V program in defining measures of child development that can be used to track progress on this priority over time. The intern will learn about pertinent early childhood data and performance indicator efforts underway in Virginia, compare child development measures from the National Survey of Children s Health, and make recommendations for indicators that best capture child development for possible inclusion in Virginia s Title V State Performance Measures. 6 2011 Needs Assessment Internships Internship with this focus may include the systematic analysis, assessment, and projection of health needs and resources in a given population or community. Assessment of Respite Care Services throughout the Lifespan, New Hampshire Department: New Hampshire Department of Health & Human Services, Title V Children with Special Health Care Needs Division, Special Medical Services Department The goal of this internship is to create a standardized and comprehensive framework for sustainable Lifespan Respite Care that is responsive to the needs of caregivers across populations in New Hampshire to enhance the respite care delivery system. Assessing Teens Utilization of Family Planning Services, Arkansas Department: Arkansas Department of Health, Reproductive Health Section The purpose of this internship is to gather data which will enable the Central Region of Arkansas Department of Health to develop teen outreach and program delivery strategies in Pulaski County. The intern will engage youth and solicit their viewpoints and expectations by utilizing new technologies and communications strategies including social media and text messaging. State Genetics Plan & Impact Assessment of MCH Funding, Montana Department: Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services, Public Health and Safety Division, Family and Community Health Bureau (FCHB) The primary project is to conduct a needs assessment to identify and define genetic health service priorities for Montana. The needs assessment will include identifying the necessary components of a state genetics plan, analyzing existing data to describe current genetics services and recipients and identify gaps, and collecting and analyzing new data on the consumer perspective of Montana genetics services. 6 Full descriptions of these internships can be found at

7 2011 Program Evaluation Internships Internships with this focus may include the monitoring, collection, and analysis of data to determine the effectiveness or outcomes of a particular program or project. Evaluation of Dating Violence Campaign and Needs Assessment of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program, Alaska Department: Alaska Department of Health and Social Services. Division of Public Health, Section of Women s, Children s, and Family Health (WCFH) The main purpose of this internship is to provide exposure to the concept of a program evaluation. The intern will participate in an evaluation of a media campaign targeting sexual and teen dating violence, including the collection and analysis of data. In addition, the intern can help design and implement a simple outcome evaluation on follow-up after hearing screening for infants. Development of a MCH Field Nursing Evaluation Model, Sonoma County, California Department: Sonoma County Department of Health Services, Public Health Division, Family Health Section The purpose of this internship is to develop a program evaluation model that assists the Sonoma County MCH Field Nursing Program move toward evidencebased practice. The intern will work closely with the MCAH team to develop a specific and realistic evaluation model which measures the impact of the program on the health of the families served. Assessment of Evidence Based Breastfeeding Promotion Practices in Medical Clinics, Missoula County, Montana Department: Missoula City-County Health Department The purpose of this internship is to evaluate the effectiveness of breastfeeding promotion activities using the USAID Took Kit for Monitoring and Evaluating Breastfeeding Practices and Programs in local medical clinics. Evaluation of the PHHV -4 Visit Model, Missoula County, Montana Department: Missoula City-County Health Department The purpose of this internship is to analyze and evaluate the indicators for effectiveness of the Public Health Home Visiting (PHHV) Four Visit Multidisciplinary Model on high risk pregnant women and children for FY Early Intervention Service Evaluation, Massachusetts Department: Massachusetts Department of Public Health The purpose of the internship is to use the Early Intervention Information System (EIIS) data to evaluate the effectiveness of the Early Intervention program. The student will have the opportunity to evaluate developmental outcomes for children enrolled in Early Intervention by eligibility category and functional area of delay based on type and intensity of services received.
