RECRUITMENT/OUTREACH INITIATIVES: Online : All positions are posted on NBCUNICareers.com Newspaper Ads: KNTV/KSTS run yearly ads in the SF Chronicle directed towards organizations that distribute information about employment opportunities. This ad directs interested organizations to complete a request form in order to receive our employment opportunity notices. San Francisco Chronicle 901 Mission Street San Francisco, CA, JobTrain a non-profit job training center, has notice of vacancies. A list of vacancies was mailed to the organization. JobTrain 1200 O Brien Dr Website Access: Interested community organizations can also obtain a request form from our station website at Television Ads: Individuals interested in job opportunities with KNTV/KSTS are encouraged to contact the stations through frequent on-air announcements. The content of these announcements includes the website address where interested viewers can look for current open positions. These announcements aired a total of 352 times on KNTV between the period August 1, 2014 and July 31, 2015 and 215 times on KSTS during the same time period. 4 Description: KNTV/KSTS offers a wide range of internship opportunities for students interested in careers in media. Our internship program provides students practical skills through hands-on assignments working with talented broadcast professionals who are willing to share their knowledge. Students have the opportunity to work in Advertising/Promotion, Relations, Finance, Creative Services, Sales/Marketing, Production, Commercial Production, News and Digital. Students may receive college credit for participating in the internship program and are paid an hourly wage. EMMA BOWEN Foundation for Minority Interests in Media: Total Current Students: 2 Description: Emma Bowen Foundation Internship and Scholarship Program was established by the media industry to help increase access to permanent job opportunities for minority students. The foundation s program is unlike other internship or scholarship programs in that students work for the partner company (NBCU) during summer and school breaks from the end of their senior year in High School until they graduate from college. During that four-year period, students have an opportunity to learn many aspects of station operations with the possibility of permanent placement upon completion of their college degree. Students in this program receive an hourly wage, as well as matching compensation, to help pay for tuition and expenses. Mentoring from selected staff in the sponsoring company is also a key element of the program. NBC Bay Area has had five interns participate in the program since 2007 and one intern has been hired as a staff employee. During the period August 1, 2014 to July 31, 2015, two students participated in the Emma Bowen Program. Our graduating Emma Bowen intern received the Student of the Year Award from the Foundation; a very prestigious honor. She is now working at KNTV as a Digital Editor. 5 III. EMPLOYEE TRAINING: EEO /Training Initiatives Station personnel, including management and on-air talent are encouraged to actively participate in community organizations and outreach events. Listed in section IV below are station events and organizations representative of participation August 1, 2014 through July 31, EEO / Human Res Training: The Stations regularly offer training to employees addressing methods of ensuring equal employment opportunities and preventing discrimination. Compliance Training is mandatory for all employees. During the reporting period, courses taken have included Inclusive Leadership Workshop, Integrity Training, Avoiding Harassment in the Workplace, Code of Conduct, Conflicts of Interest, Effective Communication, Editorial Workshops, and numerous technical skills trainings. Skills Enhancement Training: Employees of the Stations are provided with training and development opportunities designed to enhance their ability to assume positions of greater responsibility. Various courses are provided via external vendors and internal NBCU sponsored programs. During the reporting period, Station employees participated in the following development courses: Leadership Training: During the period August 1, 2014 through July 31, 2015, nominated KNTV and KSTS employees attended four NBCU Leadership courses - Lead, Leap, Invest, and Jump. All four of these courses are designed to develop current employees demonstrating leadership potential into high performing effective leaders. Employees also attended external leadership courses San Francisco Leadership, attended by VPOS and Management Leadership exploring leadership skills growth and development and specific tools to strengthen management style and team performance attended by VPOS and NSM, and the Kneeland Project developing management and leadership skills for News, attended by VP News. Both station s leadership from KNTV and KSTS attended a one day offsite Leadership Training facilitated by Randy Roberts Consulting. Ms. Roberts also held One-on-One coaching sessions throughout the year with some members of the leadership team, and up and coming leaders. Sales Training: During the period August 1, 2014 through July 31, 2015, KNTV and KSTS sales employees attended a number of training programs aimed at enhancing and developing sales skills. Among these programs were Digital Media Training focused on skills development and cross selling techniques for emerging digital platforms, Selling Automotive understanding the evolution of auto sales, evolution of digital and broadcast, SF Chamber of Commerce City Beat Event learning about SF s economic position, civic priorities and vision for the future, Wide Orbit Training to obtain the latest skills related to user interface for our traffic and sales operating system. 6 Marketing Training: KNTV and KSTS Promotion Department Employees, including the Brand Director, Marketing Director attended Promax, in Las Vegas Nevada; June 2015 Promax is an international association for entertainment and marketing professionals and is an annual conference to promote marketing strategies, provide educational opportunities and recognize those who are advancing the field of creative Marketing in a Broadcast environment. In addition a commercial production employee enhances his skills by taking a lighting class, the 2014 Illumination Experience Tour. Promotion, Digital and News employees participated in Adobe Premier training to enhance their editing skills. News Training: During the period August 1, 2014-July 31, 2015, KNTV and KSTS news employees participated in a variety of training programs designed to enhance skills necessary to keep current with the industry and perform at a high level of competency. KSTS will be moving to automated audio and the production crew was trained on the Ross automated system. Web Training for News: KNTV News personnel participated in a Social Media Boot Camp. Live Truck Training: KNTV and KSTS News personnel participated in Live Truck training as well as other EHS related training. Nielsen Training: KNTV News personnel received research training conducted by Nielsen Grabix. Business and Tech reporter Scott Budman attended the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas in January CES is an internationally renowned electronics and technology trade show attracting major companies and industry professionals worldwide. Not open to the public, the Consumer Electronics Association sponsored show typically hosts previews of products and new product announcements that help shape and define the technical future of Broadcasting. IRE Conference: News and news digital Employees attended the IRE Conference, consisting of multiple seminars and learning opportunities around Investigate Journalism. Online News Association Conference: KNTV s Digital Lead, along with our Digital Investigative Editor attended the Online News Association Conference. Miscellaneous Skills Enhancement Training: During the period August 1, 2014-July 31, 2015 a wide range of employees participated in training courses designed to help them succeed in their particular area of work. Some examples of these training courses are Data Visualization Training, Geofeedia Training, CrowdTangle Training, Linkedin Training for Journalists, HazMat training, Software training, such as Asana, a project management tool, Premiere Adobe training, Mackie Morris Writing Seminars, the Morning Show Workshop, The Dart Center for Journalism Workshop. Take Your Daughters and Son to Work Day, April 2015 Participants: All Station Event The families and our staff had the opportunity to spend the day with our team and learn firsthand what a day in the life of a working Television station is like.
