The purpose of the Graduate Studet Hadbook is to provide Chemical Egieerig graduate studets with a cocise summary of the regulatios, guidelies, procedures ad services specific to the Chemical Egieerig Departmet. 5 1 REGULATIONS GOVERNING GRADUATE PROGRAMS A. INTRODUCTION & GENERAL REGULATIONS 1. Degree Programs The Departmet of Chemical Egieerig offers graduate programs leadig to the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) ad Master of Egieerig (M.Eg.). Two routes to the M.Eg. degree are available: the Project Optio (see Sectio B) ad the Thesis Optio (see Sectio C). The M.Eg. (Project Optio) cosists primarily of graduate courses with a time-limited desig or research project. The objectives of the M.Eg. (Project Optio) are to exted the studet's kowledge i fudametal ad specialized areas of chemical egieerig ad to provide a idepedet project experiece. Oe cocetratio is offered i the M.Eg. (Project Optio) program: the Geeral cocetratio. The M.Eg. (Thesis Optio) cosists primarily of a research project leadig to a Master's thesis combied with some graduate coursework. The objectives of the M.Eg. (Thesis Optio) are to exted the studet's kowledge of the fudametals of chemical egieerig ad to provide sigificat exposure to research via a well-defied project. The Ph.D. is a research degree whose broad objective is to prepare studets to work as idepedet researchers. Studets achievig the Ph.D. will have demostrated the capability for idepedet research of high quality o a problem of importace to chemical egieerig, have gaied expertise i oe or more specialized areas ad have become self-reliat researchers. 2. Geeral Regulatios Graduate studets are registered through the Graduate ad Postdoctoral Studies Office (GPSO) i the Ph.D. ad M.Eg. programs. All graduate studets are govered by the regulatios admiistered by the GPSO ( These regulatios may be foud i the booklet Geeral Iformatio, Regulatios ad Research Guidelies (The Red Book) published aually by the GPSO. Importat deadlies for registratio, course withdrawal, ad other importat dates are posted o the Graduate Studies ad Postdoctoral website uder Caledar of Dates. The time limits for graduate degrees are 3 years for the M.Eg. ad 6 years for the Ph.D. The GPSO will approve registratio as M.Eg. 4 or Ph.D. 8 oly uder special circumstaces ad oly upo recommedatio of the Departmet. The requiremets for a Master's degree are specified i terms of credits. Studets must satisfactorily complete a miimum of 45 credits for the M.Eg. (Thesis Optio) ad the M.Eg. (Project Optio). The requiremets for the Ph.D. are listed idividually ad there is o total credits requiremet for the Ph.D. degree. 1

6 3. Deferred grade, Course failures, Forced withdrawal A grade of L (deferred) i a course may be give for reasos such as illess at the time of a examiatio oly if approval is received from the GPSO. Approval will be grated upo presetatio of a medical certificate either before or immediately after the examiatio. The miimum passig grade for a graduate studet is a B- (65%) i courses graded with letters (percetages). A studet may fail oe course required i her/his program ad still complete the degree. The failed course must be repeated or replaced by a course approved by the GPSO upo recommedatio of the Departmet. A studet failig a secod time, either i a retake course or aother required course, must withdraw from the graduate program. 4. Volutary Withdrawal from a Program If you decide that you will ot complete your program, you should withdraw officially from the uiversity. Failure to do so will mea that you will be assessed fees (as if you were still i your program, but failed to register). I order to withdraw, you must complete the Withdrawal Form/Formulaire d'abado uiversitaire ad submit it to the GPSO with otificatio to the departmet. 2

7 B. MASTER OF ENGINEERING (PROJECT OPTION, GENERAL) 1. Requiremets The miimum credit requiremets are: Credits A) CHEE 695 Project i Chemical Egieerig 6 B) Chemical Egieerig courses (500- or 600-level) 18 C) Courses comprisig a Area of Cocetratio 9 D) Additioal courses 12 Total credits 45 Notes Studets applyig to this program must have secured a research supervisor before they ca be admitted. A area of cocetratio cosists of 9 credits i a techical area (egieerig or sciece), which may be outside of chemical egieerig. I category (D), the followig courses may be chose: è Graduate courses i egieerig, sciece or maagemet. è Credits over 18 i category (B) may be couted i (D). CHEE 690 Research Techiques may ot be used for course credits. Courses take more tha 6 years before etry to the program are ot permitted as credits for the degree. Courses take previously, passed at the graduate level, ad ot cosidered as required credits for a earlier degree or diploma, may be couted towards the degree requiremets, to a maximum of 12 credits. 2. Projects ad Project Reports Project i Chemical Egieerig (CHEE 695) ad Exteded Project (CHEE 696) ivolve timelimited idepedet work o a desig or research project. Each project is rated at 6 credits. All projects must be supervised by a full-time professor of the Chemical Egieerig Departmet. Before a studet is accepted ito the program, she/he must have secured a supervisor for their research project. No studet shall be admitted ito the program without havig a supervisor. There may also be a co-supervisor, ot ecessarily a McGill professor; this is desirable i projects ivolvig a idustrial problem. Project topics may be professor iitiated, studet iitiated, or suggested by idustrial cotacts. For projects related to the studet's employmet, writte permissio must be obtaied from the employer to submit a report to the Departmet, ad a copy of this authorizatio must be submitted with the fial report. This does ot imply permissio to publish results i the ope literature. Studets or staff wishig to publish results of idustrial projects should egotiate this i advace with the compay ivolved, ad ivolve the persoel from the Office of Techology Trasfer (OTT) of McGill Uiversity i cases where itellectual property protectio is a issue. 3

8 The fial project report must be submitted by the last day of lectures for the term to the McGill supervisor, ad other co-supervisor(s). The report should cotai a abstract, a statemet of objectives, a cocise review of relevat literature, a descriptio of methods used, a discussio of the results obtaied ad coclusios. The report is evaluated by the McGill supervisor ad cosupervisor(s). The McGill supervisor assigs the grade (after discussio with the cosupervisor(s)) ad submits it to the GSAC (Prof. Kietzig). A grade of K (Icomplete) will be reported oly if the report requires major revisio or if there were exteuatig circumstaces for late submissio. Normally, failure to submit a fial report by the last day of lectures will result i a mark of F. If a studet ad supervisor agree, a secod 6-credit project (CHEE 696) may be take. A report o the first project (CHEE 695) must be submitted ad marked before the secod project begis. Special registratio procedures are followed to accommodate studets takig two related projects i a sigle term. The projects will, i fact, ru sequetially; the first project must be completed satisfactorily by the date specified by GSAC before the secod project begis. If a studet wishes to register for two urelated projects i oe term, permissio may be grated to allow the projects to ru cocurretly, provided compellig reasos are preseted. 3. Area of Cocetratio The 9-credit area of cocetratio may i a area outside the core of the studet's program (chemical egieerig). Before begiig a area of cocetratio, studets should get approval from their advisor for the courses they pla to take. 4

10 ad Permaet Residets of Caada are ot obliged to register durig summer semesters. Iteratioal studets have to register i order to maitai a full-time status). Courses CHEE 695 ad CHEE 696 may ot be used for course credit. Additioal courses may be required by the thesis supervisor(s). Oe graduate chemical egieerig course, at the appropriate level, may be take for credit at aother uiversity provided that o equivalet is offered at McGill. Courses completed at McGill or aother uiversity before a studet etered the M.Eg. program may ot be used for credit. I case of trasfer from aother program, the situatio must be aalyzed by the Director of the Graduate Program. M. Eg. (Thesis Optio) studets may take the Research Techiques course (CHEE 690). See the descriptio of this course i Appedix D (Page 26). I certai circumstaces it is possible to trasfer to the Ph.D. program without submissio of the M.Eg. thesis. See Sectio 2.J, Advacig to a New Program. 2. Startig Research All M.Eg (Thesis Optio) studets must register for CHEE 681 Laboratory Safety 1 ad CHEE 697 Thesis Proposal i their first semester. I order to esure that ew Master s studets are preseted with well-defied research problems, the supervisor is required to prepare a writte statemet (1-2 pages) of the problem together with a list of key refereces. This statemet is to be supplied to the studet withi oe week of startig work with the research supervisor. 3. Thesis Proposal The objectives of CHEE 697 are to eable the studet to start research quickly ad to provide the studet ad research supervisor with feedback at a early stage of the project. The course is marked Pass/Fail. Ideally, a prelimiary Research Proposal is submitted to the research supervisor by the middle of the term. A meetig of the research group should be held upo prelimiary submissio of the proposal for discussio ad costructive criticism of the proposal. The studet should the modify the proposal to take ito accout the criticism of the research group ad/or the results of the research work doe durig the remaiig portio of the semester. The followig poits must be addressed i the Research Proposal (typically 25 pages i legth): Backgroud of the problem ad cocise review of key literature Objectives of the thesis Pla of the work Time Pla for the work Discussio of costraits ad possible delays Refereces cited i a appropriate format No later tha the last day of lectures, the studet must submit to her/his research supervisor the fial copy of her/his Research Proposal. The supervisor may request the opiio of a secod 6

11 reader. The supervisor commuicates the grade (Pass, Fail or Icomplete) to the GSAC (Prof. Kietzig). Sice CHEE 697 has a weight of 6 credits, the fial report represets about 250 hours of work, or about 18 hours per week. This is take ito accout i the gradig. Studets should begi workig at this pace from the start of the term, to avoid coflicts betwee research work ad course work i the latter part of the term. 4. Research Progress M.Eg. (Thesis Optio) studets must register i CHEE 698 i the secod semester of their programs ad i CHEE 699 i the third semester. Caadias ad Permaet Residets of Caada are ot obliged to register to CHEE 698 or CHEE 699 durig summer semesters. Iteratioal studets must register i each semester i order to maitai a full-time status. These research courses are carried o the studet's trascript as IP (i progress) util the thesis is submitted. M.Eg. (Thesis optio) studets must complete the course CHEE 682 Laboratory Safety 2 by the ed of the first year of their degree. Each M.Eg (Thesis Optio) studet must preset a semiar to the Departmet ear the ed of the thesis work - see Sectio 2.F, Semiar Procedures. 5. Time for Completio ad Thesis Legth The expected time for completio of the M.Eg. degree is moths. To permit smooth progress leadig to early thesis submissio, it is essetial that the studet ad supervisor cosult frequetly. A formal progress review may be required for studets i M.Eg. 3 accordig to the followig procedures: I the first semester of registratio as M.Eg. 3, each studet must submit with her/his supervisor a joit oe-page report givig a timetable for completig the degree. If the pla aticipates submissio of the thesis withi the year of M.Eg. 3 registratio, o actio is take. If the pla exteds beyod the year of M.Eg. 3 registratio, the GSAC will schedule a formal progress review meetig with the studet ad supervisor. Note that the GPSO must approve registratio as M.Eg. 4. Approval is give oly i exceptioal circumstaces upo recommedatio by the Director of the Graduate Program. The legth of Master s theses i Chemical Egieerig is restricted to 125 pages icludig Appedices, but excludig the essetial frot matter such as the abstract, cotets, etc. 7

12 D. DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY 1. Requiremets The requiremets for the Ph.D. are: A thesis, examied accordig to the procedures of the GPSO. Proficiecy i Eglish: A studet ot fluet i Eglish must take Eglish courses util her/his research supervisor is satisfied with the studet's level of Eglish. Presetatio of two semiars to the Departmet; the first as required by CHEE 797, the secod earig the completio of the thesis (o registratio required for the 2 d semiar). They must still perform a safety demo (if their apparatus or procedure has chaged from their Masters project) but eed ot register for the course. 8

13 PhD studets from other departmets must register for CHEE 681 ad CHEE 687 i their first semester of their PhD program ad must complete CHEE 682 by the ed of the secod year of their degree. Ph.D. studets must register for CHEE 795 (Ph.D. Thesis Proposal) i the first semester of the program, for CHEE 796 (Ph.D. Proposal Defece) i their secod semester ad for CHEE 797 (Ph.D. Semiar) i the year followig completio of CHEE 796. Courses CHEE 690, 694, 695 ad 696 caot be used for credits. Courses completed while the cadidate was a udergraduate studet or at aother uiversity may ot be used for credit. Additioal courses may be required by the supervisor(s) or the Ph.D. Proposal Examiatio Committee. Studets who do ot perform at the Ph.D. level i research ca be required to withdraw regardless of performace i courses. 2. Ph.D Thesis Proposal Ph.D. studets must register for CHEE 795 (Ph.D. Thesis Proposal) i the first semester of the program. The submissio of a formal Research Proposal (typically 25 pages i legth) to the studet's research supervisor o the last day of lectures completes the requiremets for CHEE 795. This course is graded Pass/Fail; o K grade shall be awarded. The followig items must be icluded i the Research Proposal: Itroductio/Backgroud - A cocise literature review to justify the research objectives. Objectives - Clear research objectives, preferably i poit form. Pla of Work - The pla to achieve the research objectives. Time Pla - A detailed pla for 6 moths ad a geeral pla to completio. Origial Cotributios - A statemet of the aticipated cotributios to kowledge. Research Progress - A brief outlie of research progress. Refereces - Literature cited i a suitable format. 3. Ph.D. Proposal Defece Ph.D. studets must register for CHEE 796 (Ph.D. Proposal Defece) i their secod semester. The requiremets of the course are to defed successfully the Research Proposal accordig to the guidelies give below. The Ph.D. Research Proposal must be defeded by the last day of lectures. The examiatio committee must iclude the research supervisor(s), a additioal full-time professor from the Departmet, a examier exteral to the research group who is a fulltime professor from or outside McGill, ad a studet member. The compositio of the examiatio committee must be approved by the Graduate Program Director. It is the resposibility of the research supervisor(s) ad cadidate to fid commoly-agreed upo iteral ad exteral examiers. The role of the studet member is to esure that the defece proceeds accordig to the established rules ad to provide useful feedback based 9

14 o her/his ow experiece. The studet member should preferably be a seior member of the research group. It is the resposibility of the studet to arrage the defece at a time suitable to all members of the examiig committee, ad to esure that the examiatio date is publicized withi the Departmet. The examiatio is ope to staff ad studets. The examiatio cosists of a presetatio (typically 20 miutes) of the proposal by the studet followed by questioig by committee members. The studet will be evaluated based o the quality of the proposal, ability to carry out the proposed research as well as the likelihood that it may be completed withi three years. The committee will grade the studet o a Pass/Fail basis. I the evet of a pass grade, the committee may make recommedatios regardig the project ad/or the eed for further courses. I the evet of a failure, the studet will be asked to revise ad resubmit the proposal. This must be doe o later tha oe week prior to the ed of the examiatio period. The committee will ot ormally recovee for a secod oral examiatio, but will have the right to do so if it sees fit. A secod failure will result i the cadidate's withdrawal from the Ph.D. program. The supervisor is resposible for completig the studet s evaluatio form which is saved i the studet s file ad to give a copy of this evaluatio to the studet. The supervisor ad studet should the discuss the suggestios ad recommedatios made by the committee ad agree o a time pla for takig the required actios. 4. Ph.D. Semiar Ph.D. studets must register for CHEE 797 (Ph.D. Semiar) i the year followig completio of CHEE 796. This semiar should preset the objectives of the Ph.D. thesis ad describe the work i progress - see Sectio II.F, Semiar Procedures. This semiar may be give oly i the Fall or Witer semester. No registratio is required for the secod semiar earig the completio of the thesis. 5. Guidelies Regardig the Coduct of Research The supervisor shall defie the project area ad the overall research objectives. I the early stages of the research, the supervisor should play a leadig role i suggestig readig ad other backgroud material, i proposig the directio of experimetal work ad checkig equipmet desigs, i iitiatig meetigs with the studet ad i establishig a effective research group. As the studet's research progresses, he or she should become more self-directed. The studet should have achieved cosiderable expertise i the specific project area by the ed of the first year of her/his Ph.D. program. The studet should be deeply ivolved by this time, ad from this time o he/she should play a leadig role i carryig out the research, icludig experimetatio, aalysis of data, theoretical ad computatioal modelig, ad iitiatig meetigs of the research group. The supervisor should act as a soudig board for ew ideas ad as a advisor regardig progress, keep abreast of the geeral field of research ad become familiar with the research tools (e.g. equipmet or computer programs) employed by the studet. 10

15 The supervisor may suggest ew experimets or directios, ad these should be discussed i a cooperative maer with the studet. Throughout the research project, the supervisor shall edeavor to maitai sufficiet resources for the project. The studet is resposible for usig all research resources i a careful ad professioal maer. 6. Time for Completio Ph.D. studets are expected to complete the degree withi 3-4 years of iitial registratio i the program. To promote smooth progress leadig to early thesis submissio, it is essetial that the studet ad supervisor establish a regular process of progress review. Formal progress reviews may be required for studets i Ph.D. 6 ad above accordig to the followig procedures: I the first semester of registratio as Ph.D. 6, each studet must submit with her/his supervisor a joit report to the GSAC Chair givig plas for completio of the thesis. This report (maximum 2 pages) must cotai dates for reachig key milestoes, icludig completio of the research ad submissio of the thesis. If the pla aticipates submissio of the thesis i the year of Ph.D. 6 registratio, o actio is take. If the pla exteds to Ph.D. 7, the GSAC will schedule a formal progress review meetig ivolvig the research group, with a view to shorteig the time to thesis submissio. Note that the GPSO must approve registratio as Ph.D. 8. Approval is give oly i exceptioal circumstaces upo recommedatio of the Director of the Graduate Programs. 7. Ph.D. Thesis Legth The maximum legth of the body of the Ph.D. thesis is 225 pages. The page cout excludes the essetial frot matter ad the appedices. Each page of the thesis, icludig appedices must be umbered, i.e. all pages cotaiig text, figures, or tables must be umbered as well as pages (if ay) cotaiig oly captios or legeds. The thesis examiers ad the Ph.D. Thesis Oral Examiatio Committee may, but are ot required to, cosider the material i the appedices i their evaluatio of the thesis. 11

16 2 ADMINISTRATION OF PROGRAMS A. DEPARTMENTAL ADMINISTRATION The graduate programs are admiistered o behalf of the Departmet through the Director of the Graduate Program, who is appoited by the Departmet Chair. The Director, Prof. P. Servio, is assisted by a Graduate Secretary, Mrs. L. Miller-Aspi, ad the Graduate Studies Advisory Committee. B. GRADUATE STUDIES ADVISORY COMMITTEE (GSAC) The Graduate Studies Advisory Committee cosists of two staff members, appoited by the Departmet Chair, ad two graduate studets, elected for two-year terms by the members of the Chemical Egieerig Graduate Studets Society (ChEGSS). The compositio of the GSAC for the academic year is: Prof. P. Servio (Chair), Prof. A. Kietzig (Deputy Chair), Melissa Dick & Pierre Pascoe (Graduate Studets). The proceedigs of the Committee are treated as cofidetial by its members. The duties of the GSAC are: GSAC reviews all aspects of the graduate program ad graduate life i the Departmet. The Committee makes recommedatios for improvemets to the Departmet. The professors o the GSAC act as academic advisors to studets i the M.Eg. (Project Optio). The professors o the GSAC are resposible for esurig that a studet evaluatio is completed for each graduate course. The Committee iforms studets ad staff of importat items affectig graduate study. The Committee shall meet at the call of ay graduate studet or professor, to hear grievaces relevat to research or courses. The Committee shall act as mediator i cases of dispute betwee a studet ad her/his research supervisor. If a member of the GSAC is ivolved i a dispute, the Departmet Chair or the Presidet of the Chemical Egieerig Graduate Studets Society appoits a substitute, as appropriate. The GSAC is resposible for keepig this Hadbook up-to-date. C. GRADUATE COURSES The graduate courses tetatively scheduled for the academic year are listed i Appedix B. D. TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIPS The Departmet has a limited budget for the paymet of Teachig Assistats. These positios are assiged by the Departmet Chair at the begiig of each term, as fuds permit, followig procedures ad pay scales described i the Collective Agreemet betwee McGill Uiversity ad A.G.S.E.M. (Associatio of Graduate Studets Employed at McGill). Teachig Assistatships are ot available to M.Eg. (Project Optio) studets. Teachig Assistatships are cosidered additioal work for additioal icome. 17 E. FINANCIAL SUPPORT As a coditio of acceptace, a studet eterig graduate studies i the Departmet is required to have adequate fudig to fiace her/his studies. Aual fees are posted o the followig website: For o-research based degrees, such as the Project Optio of the M.Eg. program, o fiacial support is offered by either the Departmet or by idividual professors. For studets pursuig research-based degrees, we curretly require that each studet has secured fudig of $16,500 per year, ot icludig beefits. Regardless of the degree beig sought, details of the fiacial arragemets agreed to by the Admissios Committee are specified i the letter of admissios set to the studet. For research-based degrees, the Federal ad Provicial govermets, the Uiversity, ad the Departmet offer a umber of fudig opportuities to studets. Eligibility ad the applicatio procedures vary, depedig upo the program. It is expected that all studets will apply for scholarships ad fellowships for which they are eligible while at McGill. Studets who hold scholarships from the Natural Scieces ad Egieerig Research Coucil of Caada (NSERC) or the Fods québecois de la recherche sur la ature et les techologies (FQRNT) ad are registered i a research-based degree withi the Departmet receive a EUL or MEDA bous award. Followig uiversity policy, graduate studets are etitled to aual vacatio leave equivalet to uiversity holidays plus 15 workig days. H. THESIS PREPARATION AND SUBMISSION Before begiig work o the thesis documet, studets should read the Guidelies for Thesis Preparatio ad Guidelies for Thesis Submissio, obtaiable from the GPSO ( Master s theses require a sigle examier ad PhD theses require two examiers: iteral ad exteral. It is importat to ote that supervisors are o loger allowed to act as thesis examiers of Master s or PhD theses. For Master`s theses, the supervisor is required to cotact the potetial examier ad esure that he is willig to evaluate the thesis. For PhD theses, the supervisor (with cosultatio with the studet) is resposible for choosig the exteral examier. The GPD will the formally cotact the selected exteral examier ad see if the idividual is willig to serve o the thesis evaluatio committee. The Pre-Nomiatio of Examiers form (available o ca be set by to all chemical egieerig academic staff by the supervisor or Louise Miller-Aspi. At the thesis submissio, the Departmet forwards to GPSO the list of omiated examiers usig the Nomiatio of Thesis Examiers form o the Graduate ad Postdoctoral Studies website ( alog with the thesis. The GPSO deadlies for submissio of the thesis are posted o the Graduate ad Postdoctoral Studies website ( for each covocatio. Durig thesis preparatio, the followig guidelies should gover the work. Before submittig draft chapters to the research supervisor for review, the studet ad supervisor should agree o a procedure ad a timetable for the writig-review process, icludig a target date for submissio of the thesis. The time required to review a chapter depeds upo its legth ad complexity, the supervisor's other time commitmets ad the studet's writig skill. Uless there are exteuatig circumstaces, the turaroud time should ot exceed oe week for a chapter or oe moth for a etire thesis. A secod draft should ot require as much time as a first draft. The supervisor is ot expected to review more tha two drafts. I. COMPLETION OF M.ENG. (PROJECT OPTION) PROGRAMS To receive your degree, the Submissio Form - No-Thesis Program must be submitted by the Departmet to the GPSO approximately two moths before covocatio. 19 J. ADVANCING TO A NEW PROGRAM With submissio of the Master s thesis Studets completig the M.Eg. (Thesis Optio) who ited to eter the Ph.D. program must make a formal applicatio. Four moths before they complete their curret program, studets must submit the stadard graduate applicatio form ad arrage for two letters of referece. Before a studet ca be admitted, the previous program must be completed. Questios should be addressed to the Chair of the Graduate Admissios Committee, Prof. Viviae Yargeau. Without submissio of the Master s thesis I certai circumstaces it is possible to trasfer from the M.Eg. (Thesis Optio) to the Ph.D. program without submissio of the Master's thesis. The followig policies ad procedures apply. 1. A M.Eg. (Thesis) cadidate performig at a distictly superior level i both research ad course work, may petitio the Departmet to trasfer ito the Ph.D. program without submissio of the Master s thesis. This request must have the approval of the Thesis Supervisor(s) ad be made withi 16 moths of etry ito the M.Eg. (Thesis) program. The M.Eg. cadidate must also apply olie to the PhD program before the usual deadlies ( 2. The cadidate requestig this trasfer shall, o later tha 16 moths after etry ito the Master s program, meet the followig academic requiremets: Has completed (or will complete by the ed of the curret semester) the course requiremets (12 credits). Has completed the requiremets for the M. Eg. Thesis Proposal (CHEE 697). 3. The cadidate requestig this trasfer shall, o later tha 16 moths after etry ito the Master s program, apply olie to the PhD ad submit the followig documets to the Graduate Program Director: A copy of the M.Eg. (Thesis) thesis proposal. A research statemet approved by her/his thesis supervisor. This documet cosists of a brief descriptio of the curret research project ad how this project will be exteded to a Ph.D. (2 pages maximum). A complete Curriculum Vitae which icludes a list of publicatios, presetatios ad awards. All trascripts (udergraduate ad graduate studies). If some grades are ot yet available, the studet must provide the list of courses he/she is takig i the curret semester. I the case of iter-uiversity trasfer courses, the studet must also provide the ames of the istitutio ad professor i charge, ad the official course descriptio. A letter of recommedatio from her/his thesis supervisor. 15

The evaluatio committee cosists of the Graduate Program Director, the Chair of the Departmet, the Thesis Supervisor ad a fourth committee member, chose by the Graduate Program Director, who coducts research activities i a field closely related to the cadidate s. The evaluatio criteria are based o academic achievemet (at both udergraduate ad graduate level) ad research progress durig the Masters. 5. The evaluatio committee meets withi two weeks after receivig the request so that a decisio ca be take before the begiig of the ext semester. The Graduate Program Director will immediately iform both the cadidate ad the GPSO of the decisio. 6. If the cadidate is successful, he/she will register for the Ph.D. program at the begiig of the followig semester. The studet will the follow the ormal procedures of the Ph.D. program. 7. A usuccessful cadidate will cotiue her/his M.Eg. (Thesis) program. The cadidate will ot be recosidered for the trasfer. The total umber of course credits required of Ph.D. cadidates trasferrig from the M.Eg. program is the same as for studets who have etered the Ph.D. program with a M.Eg. degree. Additioal courses may be required by the cadidate's supervisor(s) or the evaluatio committee. 16

(Thesis Optio) ad Ph.D. programs, office space is assiged by the research supervisor ad laboratory space by the professor resposible for the laboratory (usually the research supervisor). Office space for studets i the M.Eg. (Project Optio) is assiged by Prof. R. Leask, if office spaces are available. Request forms for keys for the M.H. Wog Buildig ad the Pulp ad Paper Research Cetre are obtaied from Mrs. Jo-A Gadsby. Keys are obtaied upo paymet of a refudable deposit. B. PHOTOCOPIES A photocopier, located o Floor 3A outside Room 3060, is available for use by graduate studets havig proper authorizatio. Authorizatio may be obtaied by presetig a accout umber from the studet's supervisor to Mrs. Jo-A Gadsby. C. TELEPHONE AND FAX Research-related calls made from Departmet telephoes require a Authorizatio Code which esures that the call is automatically charged to the appropriate accout umber. A authorizatio code may be obtaied from Ms. E. Musgrave, upo request from a studet's research supervisor. A fax machie ( ) is available for studet use i Room 3270 (Chemical Egieerig store). The procedures are idetical to those for telephoe calls. D. GENERAL STORE AND RECEIVING AREA A ivetory of frequetly used materials ad supplies is stocked i the Geeral Store ad Receivig Area (Room 3270). The store is ope from 9:00-12:00, Moday - Friday (except i the summer whe it is closed o Fridays). The storekeeper, Mrs. M. Gorma, ca help you use the followig items or services: A collectio of catalogues from chemical ad laboratory supply compaies. A database of the apparatus ad istrumets purchased by the Departmet. Oly some equipmet purchased by professors from their ow research fuds is icluded. Good practice: Make sure a copy of the istructio/maiteace mauals of each ew piece of importat equipmet you buy is archived at the store. This actio will save you or a colleague some precious time A toolbox cotaiig a assortmet of tools may be borrowed for the duratio of a research project. The borrower is required to pay for the replacemet of missig tools whe the toolbox is retured. Sigle tools may be borrowed for a short time. 22 E. LABORATORY SAFETY AND SECURITY Policies relatig to safety i laboratories, shops ad offices are the resposibility of the Departmet Safety Committee (Prof. Mila Maric, Chair ad Mr. F. Caporuscio, Coordiator). Each laboratory has a Laboratory Safety Officer who is resposible for maitaiig safety stadards ad updatig the occupacy list. Research laboratories are ispected by the Safety Committee at least twice a year. Spot checks by the Safety Committee are also performed if problematic safety issues are idetified. Safety is of prime importace to all i the Departmet of Chemical Egieerig. The research supervisors ad safety officers for each laboratory are resposible for eforcig safety policies ad for esurig that all ew graduate studets become aware of the established policies ad hazards specific to the laboratory they will be workig i. Every graduate studet is required to complete the Departmetal Safety Questioaire ad perform a laboratory demostratio i frot of the Safety Committee members before receivig approval for the cotiuatio of her/his research activities. Such demostratio shall be performed oce the experimetal set-up for the project is operatioal, ad before the data gatherig phase of the project begis. The safety demostratios will be doe withi the first year for Masters' studets ad withi the first two years for Doctoral studets ad form part of the required safety courses CHEE 681/682. If experimetal procedures chage durig the course of the project, a ew safety demostratio is required to accout for the chages. Mr. Frak Caporuscio is resposible for archivig the Departmetal Safety Questioaires. Departmetal Safety Questioaire forms ca be dowloaded from the departmetal safety website. Also, useful demostratios regardig proper safety practices for gas cylider trasportatio, fume hood operatios, etc. are also available o the departmetal safety website.!!! A piece of laboratory equipmet ca be replaced. Not a huma beig!!! Every year, research equipmet is stole from our laboratories. Most of the time, this is due to the fact that laboratory doors are left ulocked. The recommeded best practice is that the last perso leavig a laboratory area, wheever this happes, closes ad locks the door. It is recommeded to work whe others are i the laboratory as a safety precautio. Whe workig durig off hours, it is recommeded to iform security you will be i the laboratory by callig x3000 from ay McGill ladlie phoe. Ay suspicious activity should also be reported to McGill security (x3000). F. MACHINE SHOP AND ELECTRONICS SHOP The Departmet Machie Shop is located i Room This shop provides fabricatio ad maiteace services for equipmet used i teachig ad research. Thesis studets should cosult the techical staff i Room 3260 i the early stages of developig their equipmet desigs. They will explai the work order procedure ad the job priority system ad help with mechaical desig. 18

23 The Departmet Electroics Shop, located i Room 3250, is directed by Mr. L. Cusmich. He will help i the desig ad assembly of electroic istrumetatio. See him i the early stages of your desig. He is also resposible for maiteace ad repair of departmetal electroic ad computer equipmet. Users of Machie or Electroics Shop services are charged a hourly rate. The rate schedule may be obtaied from Mr. Cusmich. G. INSTRUMENTAL ANALYSIS Istrumetatio available for geeral use i thesis research is located maily i Rooms 4080 ad 4170 uder the supervisio of Mr. R. Roy. Policies related to istrumetatio are developed by the Departmet Aalytical Committee comprisig two professors appoited by the Chair, Mr. Cusmich ad oe graduate studet elected from amog the authorized users of the istrumets. Mr. Cusmich IS NOT resposible for the followig: Istallatio of software Assistig graduate studet whose computer has bee ifected with a virus. The steps required to protect computers from beig ifected are listed i detail i the policy. 24 POLICY New Computer Istallatio ad Maiteace The Chemical Egieerig departmet hosts a variety of operatig systems, icludig Widows, Mac OS X, LINUX ad UNIX. Wireless etwork access is available throughout the M.H. Wog buildig. The istallatio of illegal software o McGill computers is strictly prohibited. All computers MUST USE software packages licesed by the Uiversity, the Chemical Egieerig Departmet, or the research supervisor. Our curret licese agreemet for the Microsoft Widows operatig software is limited to upgrades oly. All ew computers must be purchased with a valid operatig system (ex: Widows XP Home Editio), which ca the be upgraded legally. The amout of viruses ad security holes i operatig systems beig exploited o the Iteret is icreasig ad this presets a real security problem for computers i our departmet. This is a particularly problematic situatio for Microsoft Widows users. I order to avoid uecessary cotamiatio of computers, ad research dowtime, studets must keep their virus defiitios ad Widows operatig system up to date. The followig procedure must be carried out whe a ew computer has bee itroduced to our etwork: Oce Mr. Cusmich has give the ew computer access to the Iteret, the graduate studet must istall a legal copy of the Ativirus software which ca be uploaded from the website: - tab:hometab:crumb:7:artid:1892. Upo successful istallatio of the ativirus software, the studet must update the virus defiitios to esure that the computer is safe agaist all curretly kow virus threats. Oce the virus defiitios have bee updated, the studet eeds to update the operatig system. It is importat to INSTALL THE ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE FIRST sice it will protect the ew computer agaist attacks while the operatig system is beig updated. The graduate studet should take the habit of checkig virus defiitios ad operatig system updates AT LEAST oce a week ad should perform these actios immediately upo receivig ay ews of ew viruses or security issues with the operatig system. Those actios ca be doe automatically by properly settig up Widows ad Symatec Ativirus. The graduate studet must make sure her/his Widows logis are password protected. Computers without user logi passwords ca easily be hacked. Those computers will be discoected immediately from the etwork. 20

25 Istallatio of Licesed Software Certai software packages, used oly o McGill computers, eed to be istalled by the graduate studets. These software packages (ex.
