1 M.S./M.A. Program in Special Education Master's Degree Requirements I. GRADUATE SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS A. Completion of at least 16 graduate level credits B. GPA of 3.0 or better on last 60 credits of most recent undergraduate degree C. Recommendation from the department D. Approval by Graduate School II. DEPARTMENT REQUIREMENTS A. Thesis Option 1. Completion of 30 advisor-approved credits, including 3 credits of research methodology and at least 3 credits of thesis research. At least 15 credits must be completed in the Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education. 2. Completion of comprehensive examination. 3. Completion of master's thesis approved by faculty advisor. B. Non-Thesis Option 1. Completion of 30 advisor-approved credits, including 3 credits of research methodology. At least 15 credits must be completed in the Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education. Three to six credits may be an advisor-approved project. 2. Completion of comprehensive examination. III. COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION Apply to write a comprehensive examination early in the semester in which you expect to take it. 2 IV. APPLICATION FOR MASTER'S DEGREE Apply for your Master's degree early in the semester in which you expect to graduate. Applications and current information from the Graduate School are available from the department s student status examiner, Jan Kuehl, 432 East Campus Mall, Room 132; phone ; V. CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR INDIVIDUALS SEEKING LICENSURE Cross-categorical teacher certification (concentration in either CD, or E/BD, or LD) available at the following levels: Middle Childhood-Early Adolescence (MC-EA), Early Adolescence-Adolescence (EA-A), or both levels (MC-EA and EA-A). NOTE: If this is an initial teaching certification, the Praxis I (PPST: Pre-Professional Skills Test) must be successfully completed before a license can be issued. Also, as of August of 2004, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) has mandated the Praxis II must also be successfully completed before a license will be issued. It is our department's policy that the Praxis II be successfully completed prior to the Special Education methods/practica sequence. DPI also mandates completion of a professional portfolio. VI. CROSS-CATEGORICAL TEACHER CERTIFICATION AS PART OF THE M.S./M.A. DEGREE IN SPECIAL EDUCATION 1. Liberal Studies Requirements (40 credits) 2. Professional Requirements - (37-39 credits) Child/Adolescent Development (3-5 credit minimum): MC-EA - Ed Psych 320 EA-A - Ed Psych 321 (2-3 cr.) MC-EA and EA-A - Ed Psych 331 or both 320 and 321 Human Learning (3 credit minimum): Ed Psych 301 (3 cr. also meets Gifted and Talented requirement) Foundations of the Profession (3 credit minimum):
