4 Session 1 ( pm) Forensic Science Research and Innovation (ICJS members, LRC) Demonstrations of new techniques and methods currently being researched and developed as part of the Forensic Innovation Centre, including Infra-Red Cameras, Firearms Discharge Residue searching, forensic entomology and more. The distance learning team will also have a stand to demonstrate its use of technology in engaging and enthusing DL students. Doctoral Research Presentations on Crime and Security 1 (room 3.07) Two 15 minute student research presentations plus Q&A. Early Career Researchers (Sue Roberts, Kat Brown, Terese Jonsson, Simon Edwards, Ben Clarke, Sylvia Meichsner, Emily Nicholls, room 2.01) A three part session including research presentation, Q&A (chaired by Matthew Weait) and short video. Employability within FHSS (Ian Brown, Alice Hooley, Theresa Callan, Jo Stark, Gil Gronow, Felicity Hughes, room 3.03) Take a look at the current employability landscape and its relationship with Innovation, showcase some of the excellent opportunities already available to our students, and explore some of the planned developments in this area. Cybercrime Clinic (Lisa Sugiura and Vasileios Karagiannopoulos, room 0.04) An interactive activity looking at how you access illegal activity/ behaviour online, with a demonstration of resourcing contraband items such as drugs / firearms (though obviously not buying anything or encouraging anyone to do so!) Learning Development Tutors (Aniela Rose, Cathy Willatt, Gordon Scruton, Ian Johnson, Laura Seddon, Rhiannon Thompson, Stephanie Bennett, room 2.07) "I couldn't have done it without you! This session will include short segments on the faculty research skills role, Global Cafe, writing study days, Book Club and student feedback. Francophone Africa Outreach Activities (Dieunedort Wandji, Tony Chafer, Natalya Vince, Puppet Artist Matt Smith, room 3.24) Visual Artwork (with live painter guidance), Outreach work, Impact of consultancy with highlevel policymakers, Posters and Shadow Puppetry performance. We conduct various activities in partnership with diverse sections of the public, from local schools to policymakers in the UK and beyond, using creative and innovative approaches to ensure our research engages a wider audience beyond academic circles. Come and see how the visual art works of internationally renowned artist Patrick Altes - Leverhulme Artistin-Residence in the School of Languages and Area Studies connects to academic debates about relationships between power and representations. Under the guidance of our Puppet Artist Matt Smith from the School of Media and Performing Arts (CCI), feel free to have a go at retracing colonial history and shaping language policy using puppets. Before you go, you will also learn about why politicians and policymakers have such a keen interest in the research we produce on French-speaking Africa! (Continues on a drop-in basis through the afternoon.)
5 Session 2 ( pm) Forensic Science Research and Innovation (ICJS members, LRC) Demonstrations of new techniques and methods currently being researched and developed as part of the Forensic Innovation Centre, including Infra-Red Cameras, Firearms Discharge Residue searching, forensic entomology and more. The distance learning team will also have a stand to demonstrate its use of technology in engaging and enthusing DL students. Doctoral Research Presentations on Crime and Security 2 (room 3.07) Two 15 minute student research presentations plus Q&A. How to Initially Assess Skills for Progression: An ETF Project. (Stephen Corbett, room 0.11) This session will discuss the importance of initial assessing year old students wider skills in a further education context. It will then go on to explore, can lessons learned from the recent national project lead by the School of Education and Continuing Studies benefit our own students? Research and Impact (Simon Stewart, room 1.09) Simon Stewart chairs a panel with papers from: Paul Smith: 'Shaping Forensic Practice through the Forensic Innovation Centre'. Mark Frost: 'Utopian Communities: John Ruskin and the Guild of St. George' Placement and Internship Centre (Ian Brown, Alice Hooley, Stacey Ponsford, Anna Marie O'Connor, PIC - room 1.16) Meet returning students from the first Placement Year cohort, where did they go and what did they do? PiC staff will be on hand to provide information and a range of opportunities for students, including the Placement Year and LiFE unit. Creative Writers Session (Matthew Weait, Victoria Leslie, Andrew Bailey, Jo West, room 0.08) This session will be a celebration of writing and publishing. Victoria, Andrew, and Matthew will read short extracts from their creative work, and Jo will talk about the importance of books. We will also be launching the HSS Book Group. Come along and be inspired! Meet the Online Course Developers (Mary Watkins, Scott Simmonds, James Hare, James Lenthall, Jon Bell, Mike Taylor, Daren Cooper, Joe Wright, David Hyde, room 0.10) Chat to the OCDs about your units, explore your future plans, and see some of the work that the OCDs carry out beyond the realms of Moodle.

Translation and Interpreting (Begona Rodriguez, Sarah Griffin-Mason, room 3.23) Consider how to reflect areas and themes that map to the strategic plan, such as internationalisation of the curriculum, DL, employability, collaborations Researching Sherlock: CSL's Collaboration with Portsmouth City Council (Christopher Pittard, Kate Brombley, room 1.23) This event focuses on the Centre for Studies in Literature's AHRC funded collaboration with Portsmouth City Council, Possession and Obsession, from the perspectives of both the supervisor (in terms of applying for an AHRC CDA grant) and the student (presenting aspects of her research - including the discovery of rare Holmesian memorabilia - and the experience of undertaking a PhD across two institutions). It should be of interest to anyone thinking of establishing collaborations with non-academic partners, applying to the AHRC CDA scheme, or with an interest in Sherlock Holmes and fan cultures. Teacher Training (Charlotte Meierdirk, room 2.01) Charlotte and team showcase the encouragement of action research with the student teachers on the PGCE course PPR Issue Launch (Daniel Swan, Eilis Phillips, Danielle Norman, room 1.09) Re-launch of the Portsmouth Postgraduate Review (PPR), including a brief demonstration about how to access the website and what s new. Also to talk about news, developments and opportunities within the postgraduate community including the postgraduate seminar series.
