The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) Products, services and opportunities Vincent Henri Peuch Head of CAMS Vincent Funded by the European Union Implemented by

Atmospheric composition is Why? a pivotal between human activities and the Earth Environment aerosol emissions mitigation ozone NOx PM greenhouse gases Why? climate change exposure adaptation impacts Atmospheric composition and its changes affect our heath and well being

Did you know? Why? Every human inhales drinks eats every day. 2 kg of water 1.5 kg of food 14 kg of air Air is therefore an element essential for life, and a good quality of air is a fundamental need.

Where are we today in Europe? After climate change, air quality is the second single topic covered by Copernicus with highest economic return on investment.

and EU created CAMS

A significant heritage for CAMS A decade long series of R&D projects and an internationally respected European achievement (GEMS, MACC, II, III) An equally long experience in engaging with users and potential users in Europe and across the world (PROMOTE, MACC, II, III) Strategy Socio economic impact Experts Users

How? From Earth Observation to policyquality products Over 70 EO instruments are assimilated in the global system 2010 Boundary conditions feed an ensemble of highresolution European AQ systems (in order to assess uncertainties) 2011 More data are assimilated (in particular in situ) and used for extensive validation Policy-relevant (here health indicator for ozone) products are delivered. They are maps with no gaps, which observations alone don t provide and are essential to assess impacts.

In-Situ Observations Global Production Regional Production Supplementary Services Activities in support of production: Validation, Emissions Communications, Training, User Interaction, Use cases

Past and (immediate) future procurement opportunities

What? CAMS Porfolio AIR QUALITY AND ATMOSPHERIC COMPOSITION European air quality analyses, forecasts and assessments in support of reporting and policy making, pollen forecasts, global transport of constituents/pollutants... CLIMATE FORCING Distributions of aerosol components and their radiative impacts, other radiative forcings... OZONE LAYER AND UV Monitoring and forecasting of the ozone layer / hole, UV index, UV radiation (crops, ecosystems)... SOLAR RADIATION Estimates of solar irradiance at surface, improved potential yield assessments for solar plants... EMISSIONS AND SURFACE FLUXES Estimates of human emissions globally and in Europe (high-resolution), emissions by wildfires, surface fluxes of CO 2, CH 4 and N 2 O... ECMWF

CAMS online catalogue search Products found Search criteria based on service themes, species, geographic area, etc. Pop-up window with product description and links to plots, data, and validation

CAMS has today several thousands users A sample product Users of the global re-analysis product Time-critical users of the NRT European Air Quality forecasts

Who are the users and what do they say? Rome 11/05/2015 Vienna 3 4/03/2015 (products and services need to be sustainable) quality of products is Copernicus distinctive advantage (full free open data policy) easiness of data discovery, access, visualisation, manipulation user support and training feedback requirements Drives short term changes, mediumterm developments, long term research and next gen space infrastructure

High-quality products O 3

Assimilated GHG data ENVISAT/SCIAMACHY CH 4 and CO 2 Lower tropo. Not available since April 2012 OCO2 expected 2016 METOP-A/IASI CH 4 and CO 2 Middle tropo. GOSAT/TANSO CH 4 and CO 2 Lower tropo. Column-averaged dry-air mole fractions of CO2 and CH4 provided by:

Validation of MACC XCO 2 at Lamont (USA) 2013 Observations Model

Supporting competitiveness and job creation AOD monthly climatology MACC AOD daily values Missing extreme values Valladolid (Spain) Direct normal irradiance [W/m2] Aerosol climatologies do not allow correct representation of direct normal irradiance distribution SME, Bratislava, SK

Supporting Policy Implementation and Decision Making Paris

Use case: supporting French authorities on high SO 2 episode 23/09/2014 RIVM (NL) MACC w assimilation (OMI) MACC control (no DA)

Large wildfires and continental impacts CAMS precursor R&D project (MACC II) has estimated that the global amount of biomass burnt in June 2012 was the highest of the past decade, with wildfires particularly acute in boreal forests in North America and Asia. Ubiquitous sources! Independent validation against CALIPSO

Besides quality, users require uncertainty estimates Are models all providing the same short-range forecast for NO 2? It is close but not quite the same Local value can actually differ significantly: will there be high NO 2 in Paris? Swedish provider (SMHI)!

Europe wide, ~15 km, hourly +96h 250 power users downloading daily air quality information NRT / on line evaluation Multi model spread as a measure of forecast uncertainty

Downscaling: downstream applications Downstream applications MACC II (20km), Northern Europe (7km), Gulf of Finland (3km), Helsinki (Gaussian finite line source dispersion model).

Are coarse (10-15km res.) forecasts useful? Islington Arsenal Urban Background station London Old Street Roadside station Certainly: boundary or background values are an essential component of AQ variability, including in cities!

The sky is the limit!

Earth Observation Quality often underpins critically depends the quality on EO of data products No LS data Limb-sounding ozone data are assimilated in 2003 (MIPAS) and (MLS). OMI data are used from July 2007 User requirements are needed to drive the evolution of Copernicus space infrastructure

CAMS opportunities CAMS is now operational and delivers products and services on atmospheric composition, solar radiation and surface fluxes. Visit htpp://atmosphere.copernicus.eu and become a user! Ask questions, say what you think online or come to an upcoming CAMS users event or training sessions. Follow Copernicus ECMWF on twitter! Visit and become a provider of CAMS. In 2016, competitive calls will be launched on use cases to stimulate bright, innovative ideas with strong potential Or why not, apply for Copernicus positions at ECMWF or with one of CAMS providers!
