Midwestern University students face important and challenging personal and financial decisions throughout their enrollment and after graduation. Sensible Strategies has been created by the Office of Student Financial Services to provide students with multiple programs aimed at helping them build a strong foundation to handle complex financial decisions. Sensible Strategies includes a variety of opportunities to learn more about financial decision-making through use of presentations and workshops that include one-on-one and group discussions, webinars for remote learning, special events by external financial professionals, and web-based tools to develop financial strategies and a personal loan repayment plan. Midwestern University Educating Tomorrow s Healthcare Team

Midwestern University Presentations and Workshops: Orientation Presentations: During Orientation Presentations, students will learn more about financial literacy, smart borrowing, and become acquainted with the extensive resources developed to assist them. Through these focused efforts, within the broader context of the Orientation Presentations, new students will be aware of and encouraged to participate in the events throughout the year. Budgeting for MWU Students Workshops: This workshop will explore the differences between needs and wants and how making hard choices about spending can make a real difference in the long term. In most cases, single students can live comfortably during the academic year on a reduced standard cost of attendance budget; married students face a different set of challenges. This fun, interactive workshop is designed to help all students become thoughtful, informed consumers who are fully aware of basic budgeting techniques and empower them to make smart, long-term decisions. The Thrifty Budget concept is explored, allowing participants to review and consider the long-term impact of borrowing. Participants are challenged to consider their spending habits and review their expenses on a monthly basis. All attendees receive a colorful eight page handout that is full of helpful information.

Managing Your Loan Portfolio Workshops: Knowing and understanding your portfolio of loans (including those acquired in undergraduate or other graduate programs) is essential to effective and manageable repayment. This workshop provides students with the planning tools and techniques, including RepayReady, to evaluate the impact of additional borrowing, plan for repayment, and develop a practical strategy to repay all loans: FFELP, Federal Direct, and private. The use of other online financial planning tools is included as well.

Midwestern University Presentations and Workshops: Couples and Finances Working Together Workshops: Pursuing a graduate degree, while married, presents some unique challenges for our students and their families. Many times issues arise when the spouse is working (or not working), when the couple have children, or when the couple have relocated to campus from another region of the country. This workshop, co-presented with Student Services, addresses many of these issues and other challenges couples face. Strategies to openly identify, discuss, and resolve money management differences are discussed. Real Estate Basics Things to Know! Workshops: This workshop provides students with essential information they will need when they embark on their professional careers and consider purchasing real estate. Topics include the basics of home purchasing, pre-qualification for a loan, searching for the right property, completing the loan application, the loan approval process, and finally, the closing. With the fragile real estate markets across the country, our students will be far better informed when they make one of the largest financial commitments of their lives. Mid-Point Presentations Workshops: These workshops are designed to help students understand budget expense items for the upcoming year(s) and to encourage students to review their borrowing and expenses when they are approximately halfway through their academic program. In many instances, students are not fully aware of their current debt, as well as the course they are on to complete their programs. Through practical tips on budgeting, planning, and evaluating their projected financial position, students

can make corrections to positively impact their future. RepayReady and its tracking, monitoring, and planning features is a key element included in the workshop presentations. Institutional Loan Workshops: Critical information is provided to Federal Perkins and Primary Care Loan (PCL) borrowers as well as MWU Institutional loan borrowers in these workshops. Selected topics include deferments, forbearance, cancellation options, working with our loan servicer, contact information, as well as the consequences of default.

Midwestern University Webinars: Essentials of Work-Study Webinars: Federal Work-Study is a very important component in the list of resources that are available to Midwestern University students as they develop a plan to pay for their education. In addition to earning cash and reducing borrowing, the webinar focuses on the ability to develop important professional connections and contacts that are available through working on campus, off campus, and in professional research settings. Loan Repayment Planning Webinars: As a student prepares to graduate and leave Midwestern University, it is essential to have a complete understanding not only of their repayment obligations but of the strategy they will employ in repaying their various loans. The Federal Exit fulfills the mandatory requirement and provides a solid base of repayment information. The Loan Repayment Planning Webinars are designed to build on the basic, mandated information by providing access to a long term resource, RepayReady. This resource equips graduates with effective information and planning tools to develop a clear repayment strategy and negotiate repayment successfully.

Tools: RepayReady: RepayReady provides a portal which educates and provides resources to students on the complexities of repayment, organizes student s personal loan debt so they can manage their entire loan portfolio, presents repayment options for each type of loan with the ability to select a financial strategy for each, and guides students on how to implement their repayment strategy. RepayReady provides students with comprehensive financial planning information and improves repayment performance. USA Funds Life Skills on the Web: USA Funds Life Skills on the Web modules are designed to be supplemental/ additional resources that will reinforce learning and provide high quality, appropriate content when and where the borrower would like to access it. There are 18 specific courses that have been selected specifically for the graduate/professional student. Sample topics include repayment, credit and credit cards, budgeting and money management for couples. Special Events: Armed Forces Day: This event focuses on the opportunities open to Midwestern University students to participate in the military scholarship and loan repayment programs. The scholarship options between the Army, Navy and Air Force, along with their specific medical fields of interest, are highlighted. Practicing military medical professionals participate as a means of clarifying the roles they play and the critical support they provide to our armed forces and the nation. Financial Experts Forums: The Forum provides currently enrolled students with direct access to a panel of practicing health professionals, bankers, and financial planning professionals so that the experts can share their real-life experiences. While structured in an open-ended format, plenty of time is left for individual discussions with the experts.
