New business models for solar energy Self consumption by third parties Local supply model: Supplying third parties with solar power in the vicinity of the solar power plant without usage of the power grid ( 39 (3) EEG 2012) finances & operates Grid feed-in using feed-in-tariff (14 Ct/kWh) solar power (17 Ct/kWh) Operator/Utility /EVU Building owner or tenant e.g. industrial estate or multi-family housing Grid power (22 Ct/kWh) Buys solar energy Using local supply models, PV power plants can also be re-financed in projects where building and power plant owner differ. This way, also tenants can benefit from cheap solar power from their own roof. The feed-in-tariff is reduced to a worst case back-up for financing. 5

This requires building up specialized expertise. Benefits of local energy supply models for different stakeholders Tenants Plant operators & investors Energy utilities + Can supply themselves with cheap, clean power from their roofs + Can benefit from fixed energy production costs + Higher added value compared to pure feed-intariff + Higher added value compared to pure energy sales from grid + High customer retention due to attractive energy product In future, PV-plants <1 MWp will be financed and operated by self consumption and local supply models. This development offers attractive opportunities for consumers and companies.. 14

Benefits of local energy supply models for the energy system Relief of the EEG-account Avoiding additional grid construction Systemintegration When selling energy by direct consumption, no feed-in-tariff is needed. Since the EEG-fee is paid additionally, the EEGaccount is relieved in total. With this model, more PVplants are constructed in areas with tenantstructures (cities), where the grid still has a high capacity to incorporate solar power Cheap solar power plants can send local price signals to offer an incentive to consumers to adapt their energy consumption to the solar production. Local energy supply models show significant benefits for the energy system and can contribute to a cost-efficient system transformation. 15
