Epidemic spreading in laice-embedded scale-free neworks arxiv:physics/ v2 [physics.soc-ph] 19 Jan 2007 Xin-Jian Xu a, Zhi-Xi Wu b, Guanrong Chen c a Deparameno de Física da Universidade de Aveiro, Aveiro, Porugal b Insiue of Theoreical Physics, Lanzhou Universiy, Lanzhou Gansu , China c Deparmen of Elecronic Engineering, Ciy Universiy of Hong Kong, Kowloon, Hong Kong SAR, China Absrac We sudy geographical effecs on he spread of diseases in laice-embedded scalefree neworks. The geographical srucure is represened by he connecing probabiliy of wo nodes ha is relaed o he Euclidean disance beween hem in he laice. By sudying he sandard Suscepible-Infeced model, we found ha he geographical srucure has grea influences on he emporal behavior of epidemic oubreaks and he propagaion in he underlying nework: he more geographically consrained he nework is, he more smoohly he epidemic spreads, which is differen from he clearly hierarchical dynamics ha he infecion pervades he neworks in a progressive cascade across smaller-degree classes in Barabási-Alber scale-free neworks. Key words: Epidemic spreading; geographical neworks; dynamics of social sysems 1 Inroducion The classical mahemaical approach o disease spreading eiher ignores he populaion srucure or reas populaions as disribued in a regular medium [1]. However, i has been suggesed recenly ha many social, biological, and communicaion sysems possess wo universal characers, he small-world effec [2] and he scale-free propery [3], which can be described by complex Corresponding auhor. address: xinjxu@fis.ua.p (Xin-Jian Xu a ). 2 neworks whose nodes represen individuals and links represen he ineracions among hem [4]. In view of he wide occurrence of complex neworks in naure, i is imporan o sudy he effecs of opological srucures on he dynamics of epidemic spreading. Pioneering works [5,6,7,8] have given some valuable insighs of ha: for small-world neworks, here are criical hresholds below which infecious diseases will evenually die ou; on he conrary, even infecions wih low spreading raes will prevail over he enire populaion in scale-free neworks, which radically changes many of he conclusions drawn in classic epidemic modelling. Furhermore, i was observed ha he heerogeneiy of a populaion nework in which he epidemic spreads may have noiceable effecs on he evoluion of he epidemic as well as he corresponding immunizaion sraegies [8,9,10]. In many real sysems, however, individuals are ofen embedded in a Euclidean geographical space and he ineracions among hem usually depend on heir spaial disances [11]. Also, i has been proved ha he characerisic disance plays a crucial role in he phenomena aking place in he sysem [12,13,14,15]. Thus, i is naural o sudy complex neworks wih geographical properies. Rozenfeld e al. considered ha he spaial disance can affec he connecion beween nodes and proposed a laice-embedded scale-free nework (LESFN) model [12] o accoun for geographical effecs. Based on a naural principle of minimizing he oal lengh of links in he sysem, he scale-free neworks can be embedded in a Euclidean space wihou addiional exernal exponens. Since disribuions of individuals in social neworks are always dependen on heir spaial locaions, he influence of geographical srucures on epidemic spreading is of high imporance, bu up o now i has rarely been sudied excep for [16,17]. In his paper, we sudy he sandard Suscepible-Infeced (SI) model on he LESFNs, rying o undersand how he geographical srucure affecs he dynamical process of epidemic spreading. Especially, we consider he emporal behavior of epidemic oubreaks and he propagaion in he underlying nework. I is found ha he geographical srucure plays an imporan role in he epidemic oubreaks and he propagaion of diseases. 2 The model According o Ref. [12], he LESFN is generaed as follows: (i) a laice of size N = L L wih periodic boundary condiions is assumed, upon which he nework will be embedded; (ii) for each sie, a prese degree k is assigned aken from he scale-free disribuion, P(k) k γ, m < k < K; (iii) a node (say i, wih degree k i ) is picked ou randomly and conneced o is closes neighbors unil is degree quoa k i is realized or unil all sies up o a disance, 2
10 0 A = P(k) k Fig. 1. (Color online) Degree disribuion of an LESFN model wih N = 10000, γ = 2.5, and for differen values of A. The erriory parameer A conrols he influence of he geographical disance on he nework srucure. r(k i ) = A k i, have been explored. Duplicae connecions are avoided. Here, r(k i ) is he spaial disance on a Euclidean plane, denoing he characerisic radius of he region ha node i can almos freely connec o he ohers; (iv) his process is repeaed hroughou all he sies on he laice. Following his mehod, neworks wih γ > 2 can be successfully embedded up o a (Euclidean) disance r(k), which can be made as large as desired depending upon he change of he erriory parameer A. Especially, he model urns ou o be a randomly conneced scale-free nework when A [18]. Typical neworks wih γ = 2.5 resuling from he embedding mehod are illusraed in Fig. 1. The power-low degree disribuions of he LESFNs achieve heir naural cuoff lenghs for, 3, and 9, respecively. While for A = 1, he nework ends a some finie-size cuoff lengh. In order o sudy he dynamical evoluion of epidemic oubreaks, we focus on he sandard SI model [1]. In his model, individuals have only wo discree saes: suscepible (or healhy) and infeced. Each individual is represened by a verex of he nework and he links are he connecions beween individuals along which he infecion may spread. There are iniially a number of I 0 infeced nodes and any infeced node can pass he disease o is suscepible 3

(a), λ = (solid line), (dash line), (do line), and (dash-do line), respecively. (b) λ = 0.001, A = 1 (solid line), 2 (dash line), 3 (do line), and 4 (dash-do line), respecively. The nework size is N = All he plos were averaged over 500 experimens. neighbors a a spreading rae λ. Once a suscepible node is infeced, i remains in his sae. The oal populaion (he size of he nework) N is assumed o be consan and, if S() and I() are he numbers of suscepible and infeced individuals a ime, respecively, hen N = S()+I(). In spie of is simpliciy, he SI model is a good approximaion for sudying he early dynamics of epidemic oubreaks [1,10] and assessing he effecs of he underlying opologies on he spreading dynamics [15,19]. 3 Simulaion resuls We have performed Mone-Carlo (MC) simulaions of he SI model wih synchronously updaing on he LESFNs. Wih relevance o empirical evidence ha many neworks are characerized by a power-low disribuion wih 2 < γ < 3 [4], we se γ = 2.5 in he presen work. Iniially, we selec one node randomly and assume i is infeced. The disease will spread hroughou he nework and he dynamical process is conrolled by he opology of he underlying nework. In Fig. 2, we repor he emporal behavior of oubreaks in he LESFNs. The densiy of infeced individuals, ρ() (= I()/N), is compued over 500 realizaions of he dynamics. Consisen wih he definiion of he model, all he 4
(b) (a) = A = 1 = = = V inf () Fig. 3. (Color online) Linear-log plos of spreading velociy in he LESFNs for differen values of λ and A. The nework size is N = All he curves were averaged over 500 realizaions. The symbols are he same as in Fig. 2. individuals will be infeced in he long-ime limi, i.e., lim ρ() = 1, since infeced individuals remain unchanged during he evoluion. In Fig. 2(a), for he given connecing region (), he greaer he spreading rae λ is, he more quickly he infecion spreads. Fig. 2(b) shows he dependence of he infecious prevalence ρ() on he erriory parameer A, while he spreading rae is fixed a λ = As A increases from 1 o 9, he average spaial lengh of edges increases [12]; namely, he nodes have larger probabiliies o connec o more oher nodes, which herefore leads o a faser spread of he infecion. To beer undersand he virus propagaion in he populaion, we sudy in deail he spreading velociy, wrien as [20] V inf () = dρ() d ρ() ρ( 1). (1) We coun he number of newly infeced nodes a each ime sep and repor he spreading velociy in Fig. 3. Apparenly, he spreading velociy goes up o a peak quickly and leaves very shor response ime for us o develop conrol measures. Before he oubreaks of he infecion, he number of infeced individuals is very small, lasing for a very long ime during he oubreak, and he number of suscepible individuals is very small. Thus, when is very small (or very large), he spreading velociy is close o zero. In he case of (Fig. 3(a)), all plos show an exponenial decay in he long-ime propagaion. These resuls are weakened for a small circular connecing probabiliy (in paricular, for A = 1), as shown in Fig. 3(b), where he disease spreads in a relaively 5
<k inf ()> A = Fig. 4. (Color online) Temporal behavior of he average degree of he newly infeced nodes for he SI model oubreaks in he LESFNs wih N = and λ = The daa are averaged over 500 dynamical processes. low velociy, which herefore slows down he oubreaks. A more precise characerizaion of he epidemic diffusion hrough such a nework can be achieved by sudying he average degree of he newly infeced individuals a ime [10], given by k inf () = k ki k () k ki k ( 1), (2) I() I( 1) where I k () is he number of infeced nodes wih degree k. In Fig. 4, we plo he emporal behavior of k inf () for he SI model wih λ = in he LESFNs. Differen from he clearly hierarchical dynamics in Barabási-Alber scale-free neworks [10], in which he infecion pervades he neworks in a progressive cascade across smaller-degree classes, epidemic spreads slowly from highero lower-degree classes in he LESFNs. The smaller he erriory parameer A is, he more smoohly he infecion propagaes. Especially, srong global oscillaions arise in he iniial ime region, which implies ha he geographical srucure plays an imporan role in early epidemic spreading, independen of he degrees of he infeced nodes. 6
Var( ()) A = Fig. 5. (Color online) Temporal behavior of he variance of he densiy of infeced nodes in he LESFNs for differen values of A. The resuls are obained for λ = and on neworks of size N = Since he inrinsic sochasiciy of he epidemic spreading makes each realizaion unique [15,17], i is valuable o analyze he saisical flucuaions around he average behavior for assessing simulaion resuls wih respec o real oubreaks. We measure he variance of he prevalence, defined by V ar(ρ()) = E[(ρ() ρ()) 2 ]. (3) In order o evaluae his quaniy, we have performed 500 independen runs wih differen configuraions of he inrinsic frequencies as well as differen nework realizaions. Fig. 5 displays he ime evoluion of V ar(ρ()) for LESFNs wih differen values of A. Since he iniial prevalence is fixed and is he same for all insances, V ar(ρ()) is iniially equal o zero and can only increase. A very large ime, almos all nodes are infeced, implying ha lim V ar(ρ()) = 0. Compared wih Fig. 3(b), one can easily find ha ime regions in which he flucuaions are maximal are he same as ha in which he spreading velociies are he fases. Moreover, an imporan feaure is he rough symmery of curves, regardless of (more randomly scale-free) or A = 1 (more locally consrained) and he ime regimes in which he flucuaions are maximal corresponding o a small diversiy of he degrees of he infeced nodes. This is 7
also differen from ha in Barabási-Alber scale-free neworks [15]. 4 Conclusions We have sudied geographical effecs on he spreading phenomena in laiceembedded scale-free neworks, in which a erriory parameer A conrols he influence of he geographical srucure on he nework. We have invesigaed he emporal behavior of epidemic oubreaks and found ha he spreading velociy reaches a peak very quickly in he iniial infecion period and hen decays in an approximaely exponenial form in a more randomly scale-free region, which is consisen wih previous sudies. While he neworks are more graphically consrained, his feaure is apparenly weakened. Furhermore, we have sudied he propagaion of he infecion hrough differen degree classes in he neworks. Differen from he clearly hierarchical dynamics in which he infecion pervades he neworks in a progressive cascade across smaller-degree classes in Barabási-Alber scale-free neworks, epidemic smoohly spreads from higher- o lower-degree classes in he LESFNs. Finally, we have analyzed he prevalence flucuaions around he average epidemic process. A rough symmery of curves is found and he ime regions in which he flucuaions are maximal correspond o a small diversiy of he degrees of he infeced nodes, which is also differen from ha observed from Barabási-Alber scale-free neworks. 5 Acknowledgemens X.-J.
