The Oxford Diploma in Strategy and Innovation offers you the insight and understanding needed to lead organisations in a complex global business environment. It is a rigorous, academic qualification designed to enable executives to combine masterslevel study with demanding working lives. Oxford has been educating leaders for 800 years and this Diploma and the students who take it are part of a distinguished tradition of excellence. Professor Peter Tufano Dean, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford 3
The route to competitive advantage The Oxford Diploma in Strategy and Innovation is a masterslevel postgraduate qualification. It is designed to enhance your ability to take effective strategic decisions in today s global business environment, and to innovate for competitive advantage. This is an intellectually rich programme, designed to extend your knowledge and broaden and deepen your skill base. The Diploma combines the highest standards of academic rigour with a practical approach to strategic decision making, innovation, and the challenges of operating in a global environment. This is an intellectually rich programme, designed to extend your knowledge and broaden and deepen your skill base, with a clear focus on practical application. The programme is based on four modules of teaching in the areas of strategy, innovation and entrepreneurship, international business and strategy execution. Each module is taught over four days in a single 12-month period. On successful completion of the programme participants are awarded a postgraduate Diploma from the University of Oxford. Since it was founded in 1996, Saïd Business School has become one of the most prestigious business schools in the world. It is modern and dynamic, yet grounded in Oxford s great academic tradition. Consistently ranked among the very best in the world by the Financial Times, Saïd Business School draws on the best elements of Oxford to train global leaders. Our admissions process brings together an extraordinary group of high achievers from a wide variety of countries and industry sectors. From the very first module in strategy I came away with a whole new perspective. Martin Eltner, Senior Manager, Siemens AG 4 University Of oxford Diploma in strategy and innovation

Programme outline Drawing on Oxford s experience in educating leaders for 800 years, the Diploma combines the highest standards of academic rigour with a practical understanding of strategy and innovation. It will equip you with the knowledge you need to compete globally for senior management roles. Academic assessment The Diploma is built on four core courses that are completed module by module within one year. Each module begins on a Wednesday and concludes on Saturday afternoon, allowing participants to combine work with study. All four modules are assessed by a mixture of examinations and assignments. Participants must pass all four modules and a business project in order to be awarded the Diploma. Participants who pass and are awarded the Diploma are offered the opportunity to receive their Diploma at a traditional Oxford University ceremony. Business project The Diploma concludes with a final project report that integrates new insights from the programme. The project report of up to 10,000 words will be based on current or emerging specific strategic or organisational issues taking place within the participant s own organisation or sector. Module One Strategy Strategy is concerned with the long-term success of the organisation as a whole, defining its direction and scope to gain competitive advantage. This module is designed to equip you with a sound understanding of the principles of both competitive and corporate strategy. You will develop the ability to analyse key issues in strategic decision making, and to understand, in depth, the strategic decision making process itself. This module will build your capacity to speak confidently about strategic goals thus equipping you to operate successfully among other senior executives. This module will cover: Competitive strategy Strategy in complex organisations Decision making analysis Strategy processes Advocating for strategic change 6 University Of oxford Diploma in strategy and innovation
Strategy is what elevates truly extraordinary leaders above merely ordinary ones. Oxford s Diploma in Strategy and Innovation will give you the tools to achieve your career goals and to deliver success for your organisation wherever you operate in the world. Christopher McKenna, Programme Director Module Two Entrepreneurship and innovation Innovation strategy takes shape at the interface of the dynamics of new markets, organisational capabilities for innovation, and the strategic management of new technologies. This module provides a detailed understanding of value creation and capture in the 21st century, focusing on the critical role of emerging technologies and markets. You will develop the skills required to analyse the value of new developments, and to adapt to the changing business environment. This module will explore the strategies that can leverage and sustain innovation, and the tools that make it possible to create, deliver and capture value. This module will cover: Emergent markets and technologies Thinking entrepreneurially Partnering for innovation Strategies to sustain innovation Tools to capture value Module Three Globalisation and strategy Strategic planning in the global context is a pre-requisite for leadership in any sector. This module is designed to develop your understanding of critical trends in global business, and the factors that underlie these trends. You will evaluate the opportunities and risks of global expansion, and the tools available to implement a global strategy. This module will focus on the political, social and regulatory environment in which organisations operate, including the development of strategies for corporate responsibility and reputation management. This module will cover: Global trends Successful expansion strategies Managing the global value chain Global value creation: adding value scorecard Strategies for capturing global value Module Four Strategy in action Strategy in principle without practical implementation offers little in the way of sustainable advantage. In too many cases a good strategy fails due to poor execution or a lack of understanding of the political and organisational dynamics. With a clear focus on practical application, this module draws the programme together to examine how you will execute strategy effectively in your organisational context. You will consider how to lead strategic renewal in the context of ambiguity, complexity and internal and external challenges, and deliver real success for your organisation. This module will cover: Building organisational capabilities Dealing with complexity Reshaping business models Tools for implementation Delivering success 7
The diploma candidate The programme is designed for experienced executives with a good first degree or equivalent, and at least five years work experience. Participants are likely to be middle or senior managers seeking to enhance their skills in the strategic arena and to operate successfully in today s global environment. I came to Oxford thinking I would get a top level education and I ended up with much more. The distinctive aspect of undertaking this learning at Oxford was the fact that we had the most remarkable professors leading us and stimulating fascinating debates. These conversations were theoretical and, at the same time, addressed highly practical implications in our working lives. 10 Case studies Allan Châtenay, President, Explor, Canada The Oxford Diploma in Strategy and Innovation gave me conceptual frameworks I didn t have. Many of us act or react to the world around us intuitively but I wanted to think about the classic frameworks for corporate strategy and adapt these to new ways of doing business. The diploma allowed me to step back from the hectic pace of running my own privately-owned corporation in Canada to think about what we were doing, why we were doing it and what we should be thinking about to build our organisational successfully. The Diploma in Strategy and Innovation did just that, and encouraged me to think critically. I have gone on to analyse our industry segment in detail using the concepts learnt on the programme and I also looked at whether there is a correlation between companies that think and act strategically and the outcomes of their business. This work, which came out of the Oxford experience, will help to craft our strategy going forward. Ultimately the diploma has made me better at analysing our own strategy as well as the strategies of our competitors. I have also found out that there is a big difference between knowing the challenges you are facing, and really understanding them. Christian Schäfer, Director, Deutsche Bank, Germany While I was in charge of product development at Deutsche Bank I felt that I needed the strategic skills that just can t be found from a text book. I also wanted to be inspired by a new cultural environment provided by a top programme where you learn from your peers as well as the faculty. The Oxford Diploma in Strategy and Innovation fitted the bill perfectly over a year you explore a wide range of new models and analyse cutting-edge concepts in order to build a comprehensive strategic toolkit. Out goes the screwdriver, in comes the power drill with detailed instructions on how to use it. Oxford s unique way of learning is driven by people, in the case of the diploma this meant 60 people from 28 countries and all continents. My peer group was wonderfully collaborative, impressive and motivated. Before I started I struggled to understand the benefits of going through the process of preparing for half-day case-based exams but I was wrong. The rigour of undergoing examinations made me digest the learning much more deeply which has in turn helped me utilise the learning in my work. And the physical experience was amazing: walking down the long isles of the examination hall in our sub fusc and sitting down at a small table feeling rather humble. The insights from the strategy and innovation modules dramatically changed my life: I now look at the world from a very different s perspective, with a deeper understanding of my surroundings. The course significantly changed my own focus towards creating and shaping markets rather than product development. It was an amazing and inspiring year. 10 University Of oxford Diploma in strategy and innovation

I believe the Oxford Diploma in Strategy and Innovation has improved my strategic decision making ability, honed my management skills, and enabled me to develop a more sophisticated approach to business. The programme has supported me in achieving my professional goals and helped me to make the right decisions to resolve complex and strategic business problems. Mehtap Otelci, Peppers & Rogers Group Case studies Izak Smit, Distribution, Managing Executive: WIMI Distribution, Barclays Africa, South Africa For many South Africans, Oxford is the ultimate destination in education, partly because of the Rhodes scholarships. Personally, I also always wanted to do something at Oxford but work inevitably got in the way until a colleague flagged up the Diploma in Strategy and Innovation. This combination makes a lot of sense for anyone in an executive job because so much of what we do is about creating a culture in our organisations where innovation can take place. The timing was perfect as I had to turn around a part of the business and ask strategic questions about what we should do different. The Diploma was structured in a way that meant I could fit it in and it provided invaluable time to reflect in the middle of making big changes at work. I never formally studied strategy and the Oxford Diploma closed that gap. It gave me the necessary confidence and vocabulary. But it went far beyond what you could learn from reading a textbook and you shouldn t underestimate what it takes to complete the programme: it isn t just about pitching up for four weeks. You have to put in a lot, but you most probably will want to as it is incredibly interesting and rewarding. These four weeks where you switch off and become a student again are very valuable. You enter into deep friendships with people from everywhere across the globe and get different perspectives first-hand. People can share personal or professional issues in a high-trust environment that makes it safe to discuss work issues and career moves. María Cristina Arenas, Founder and Managing Director, Factor C, Venezuela The Oxford Diploma in Strategy and Innovation has not only given me new tools to face business challenges, it has truly changed the way I think. After some years in business, I had the opportunity to start up a regulatory compliance unit in a Venezuelan Bank. I faced the challenge of creating effective business processes to support the bank s strategy and felt that I needed a new methodology. One day I read about the Oxford Diploma in the Economist and never looked back. Oxford has allowed me to expose and evaluate ideas in an international context. When we study international methodologies in Venezuela we don t usually critique them whereas the Diploma in Strategy and Innovation has taught me how to be critical while respecting and appreciating new ideas. I love the energy of Oxford, it is a magical setting. And people are respectful while still challenging each other when you judge you cut your own wings. The Diploma opened up new opportunities for most of us. In my case it encouraged me to put together a new strategic management methodology and to start my own business back in Venezuela, helping companies to comply with regulations and to improve their business operations. The Diploma in Strategy and Innovation has given me the confidence and knowledge to contribute to building institutions here in Venezuela. I think every day about the positive outcomes of having invested in an education at Oxford University. It helps me to believe in my future. 15
