We will meet in the fellowship hall to gather for fellowship, prepare the banner and bury it for the new season of Lent. This is a fun event and an excellent way to journey into lent together as a congregation! For a Better World starts on Wednesday, February 25! 1

2 COUNCIL COLUMN Notes from the January 13 meeting: Pastor Kjell offered a big thank you to the Council members who were finishing their terms. These outgoing members are: Diane Johnson, Judy Lubben, Valerie Sorenson, Molly Swanson and Grace Tauring. All of us thank these devoted Council members for their work on the church s behalf! Finance committee chair Lance Novak presented the proposed 2015 budget and he, along with Diane Johnson, discussed the December financial report. In 2014 our total receipts exceeded expenses for the combined general and debt service funds by $7,000. In explaining the proposed 2015 budget to the Council, Lance explained that the projected receipts are lower in 2015 resulting in a deficit budget. In preparation for the annual meeting on January 25, the finance committee will be leading a forum after worship on January 18 to explain the 2015 budget and answer any questions from the congregation. Council approved the treasurer s report and the 2015 budget report, presented jointly. We will soon be signing a contract with the organ repair company to get started with organ repairs. A large donation has been given anonymously to help pay for a projector and screen in the sanctuary. Thank you to this generous individual! Council approved a call committee for the Faith & Life position. The committee consists of Martha Knutson, Matt Peterson, Jennifer Stoffel, Melissa Weinhandl, Deb Weir and Pastor Kjell. The nominating committee reported on a full slate of candidates for the 2015 Council. Thank you to those volunteering their time and talents to the 2015 Council! Enjoy the Taylor family s home-cooked meal of spaghetti and meatballs, chicken Parmesan, salad and dessert. Vegetarian and gluten free options will be available. There will be a free-will offering to cover the cost of food. All proceeds from the silent auction will go to support our summer Youth & Family ministries such as day camp counselors, travel costs for the 2015 Youth Gathering in Detroit, and summer camperships for our young members. Interested in helping out? Sue Megrund will be collecting silent auction donations; bake sale item can be delivered to church the day of the event; and those interested in helping with set-up/clean-up can contact Melissa Weinhandl. Thanks for your support! Everyone is welcome! Bring a friend! Guest Preacher Pastor Jim Nelson Sunday, February 15 We welcome Pastor Jim Nelson as our guest preacher. He lives in South Minneapolis with his wife Charlene and his daughter Lauren. He was an interim pastor in the Minneapolis Area Synod for 18 years before he came to Peace Lutheran to serve during the call process of Pastor Kjell Ferris. Pastor Jim, along with the Celebration Singers, will lead the congregation in worship and song. We look forward to finding out what he s been doing since his retirement last June. 2

3 PARISH NURSE NEWS Three Ways to Be Healthy ADULT FORUM: DEALING WITH CONFLICT AS CHRISTIANS Sunday, February 1 from 10:15 11:00 am One of the biggest challenges as a Christian is handling our anger and differences with one another. It s easy to be kind and loving when we all agree but much tougher when we differ in beliefs, values, needs and personality. Sondra, who has taught conflict skills in both businesses and churches, will lead the forum. FAITHFULLY FIT FOREVER Tuesday Mornings from 10:00 11:00 am in the Narthex This gentle exercise program is for all adults. Invite your friends! Winter is a time when we sit too much FFF will exercise your body, spirit and mind! No charge! Watch the Health Ministry bulletin board for dates we don t meet! PEACE S HEALTH FAIR Sunday, March 15 from 10:00 am 12:30 pm Plan now to attend the Second Annual Peace Health Fair. This year it will be on Sunday, right after the church worship service. Our theme will be HEALTHY EATING and the learning sessions will be followed by lunch. (Last year s wraps will be back by popular demand!!) Watch for more information on the website, bulletin and next month s newsletter. Registration information will also be available. This Health Fair is made possible, in part, by a grant from Fairview Community Health. CALL COMMITTEE UPDATE After the Congregational Conversation with the bishop on January 25, the call committee has submitted the Ministry Site Profile to the Synod office. We should receive the names of candidates in mid to late February. If you know a pastor you would like to nominate for the position, please contact Pastor Kjell or one of the members of the call committee: Martha Knutson, Matt Peterson, Jennifer Stoffel, Melissa Weinhandl and Deb Weir. Projection Screen in the Sanctuary Thanks to a few generous donors we will be having a screen and projector installed in the sanctuary. It should be in place by the middle of February and will be used as part of the Lent series. So start a donation box at home to bring in those items you no longer need. (We take just about anything that works, except Christmas decorations, electronics and adult clothing.) We came up with some other ideas for the Bake Sale: party mixes are good options, smaller pies, homemade soups/chilis, mason jar pies/soups/cookie mixes are also welcome. Putting on this sale means we need many hands to make it successful (which it is every year). So please consider lending a handing a hand before (set up April 26 29), during the sale, and/or after (clean up noon 3:00 pm). Remember, all monies raised are donated to local charities.
