1 RUMActive Phase 2: Description and Requirements Professor: Amirhossein Chinaei Team Members: Charlie Castro Soto, Jose A. Abreu Delgado, José Francisco Rodríguez Zayas Project Description Web and Mobile application with the goal of keeping students and staff up to date with the latest news, activities and cultural gatherings on campus. Section 1: Requirements ( Beta Release on Phase 5) Essential Requirements: The system will allows any user to see the events and news held on campus without registration nor preferences. If preferences are not specified by the user, the system will suggest the user to fill his/her preferences in order to present preferred tailored news and events. The system will show activities and news based on the user s preferences on the main application page. The system will display the events on the weekly or month events provided by the campus news. An App bar of the system will provided 3 options: A selection to see events from the upcoming week. A selection to events in the whole month. A selection to travel to the Settings Page. In the Setting s page of the system, the page will show the current new s preferences and the user will have the ability to update and changes the current settings. As a notification activity, the system will provide the following ways to notify the user on the events he/she selected: encasing will be an option, asking to send via a reminder of the event the user will attend. If the user decides not to send notifications the system will not provide reminders.

2 These reminders will be handled by a third party engine called SendGrid. In the main page, every event notification will have the capacity to travel to an event page by the system. The system will only show Events of the current month in the Main page. Each month, the system will refresh the current news and events. The System will have the ability to show events from other months other than the current. An artificial intelligence system will filter out the events and news corresponding to the categories selected. Meanwhile, the events and news will be administered by the project members. The system s Event Page will consist of the following: Event Title Event Description Event Location (if specified by the Event provider) Event Time and Date Attendance Selection Buttons: Attending Depending on the user s selection, the System will have the ability to send the event s notification via . In case of the Mobile Device Solution, the system will also be able to create an event in the device s calendar with the complete description, time and date. The System will record the amount of users pressing attending, this information will be returned to the Event provider with the purpose of having a general idea of the amount of people going to the event. In case of event Cancellation, the system will send automatically a push notification(mobile App) and an to the users who pressed the Attending button. A Push Notification will be created for the mobile app 24 hours prior to the Event. This Notification can be disabled or changed in the Settings View. In the Event Page, a Share selection will be available with the purpose of sharing the event via Major Social Networks including Facebook, twitter and Google+. A Icon will appear beside the Sharing zone for the purpose of letting the user share the event with its description, time and date to other users. After Testing and Commercialization the Event page will provide advertisment based on the User s preferences. The system will provide a clickable area for the commercial redirecting the user to a web page of the mentioned comercial. Desirable Requirements: Valid Map Pin based on GPS of the Activity Location. User will be able to add the appointment to the calendar of the Used SmartPhone. User can Share activity details in main Social Networks like Twitter, Facebook ect.

3 A photo of Propaganda (if included with the event) will be seen in the Activity s description. The system is required to support the language preference of both english and spanish. If the User provides that is attending the mentioned Event, an with the event s description will be send to the user 1 day prior to the event as a reminder. The system functionality will be driven by policy whenever possible. The same policies apply to the mobile and desktop versions. Event Host are Required the Following Information for the creation of an event: Event Name, Brief Description, Location, Time and Date. Optional info can be included as Event Picture and GPS map Pin. For the Scope of this Project, Event Data will be uploaded directly to the Database by and only by the Team members of the mentioned project. As in the Beta Release, all data(events and News) will be uploaded to the Database by Project Team Members. This MetaData will be supplied by: Prensa Rum: Press Services provided in Campus Cartero: Official news supplier for UPRM. ECE Department: particular college department for Beta Testing. The system will fully function in major browsers. The system will support mobile users of Android Operating Systems. Mobile App will need to have a Constant Internet Connection in order to refresh content An Offline version can show previous loaded News and Events. But will not be able to join in specific Events. Mobile App will be subjected to giving personal data and in most cases personal interests and preferences. Mobile App can be subjected to mandatory updates in an unspecified time interval after the release into the market. Calendar functionality, Camera functionality and internal Memory will be used for the better optimization of the web and mobile application. Section 2: In this section the team investigates 3 programming languages, 3 DBMS s, 3 app development tools, and 3 web programming tools. As a result, each of these languages and tools are explained with the some core questions on each topic. Three Programming Languages: 1. The Javascript language: What is the major advantage of this language? The Javascript language is a object oriented and dynamic language which allows to extend functionality into websites.it is also used for client side scripting, make webpages interactive and make user interaction more dynamic rather than static web pages. It is said to be the modern language of the web due that it runs in almost every web browser.

4 Main advantages of the javascript language are the following: Client side executable: This means the code is executed on the user s processor rather than a web server. It implies that saves bandwidth and strain on the web server. Cross browser platform support: Javascript is supports most web browsers in which can be used on desktop applications or mobile applications without making changes to the code. It adapts quickly and runs fast. Interactive user interface and wide technology support: Javascript is tightly couple with HTML and CSS. In addition, it supports the most of the tools like PhoneGap and exchange data formats such a JSON. 2. The Ruby language: What is the major advantage of this language? Ruby is a reflective and general purpose programming language that is widely used for server side programming.it is one of the few programming languages that support various programming styles such as Object oriented, and imperative.in addition to the support of various of programming style, it has the support of automatic memory management familiar to Java. Ruby today is being the modern competitor of the more old server side language PHP. The main advantages are prescribed below: Multiple programming paradigm : The fundamental advantage of Ruby is that it supports various programming styles. Making it very flexible to the programmer to structure the code and its functionality. For instance,it uses procedural programming (i.e defining functions/variables), object oriented with object orientation where everything is an object. As a result, making it versatile and easy to use. Dynamic automatic memory management: Ruby supports a Garbage Collector with the following role:free objects that were previously allocated but not used anymore. Without a Garbage collector we would have to manually deallocate unused memory and watching out for memory leaks constantly. Support to the Rails Framework: Ruby supports the web development framework Rails which focus on creating web applications that emphasized simplicity and productivity. 3. The Java language: What is the major advantage of this language? Java being one of the most prominent Object oriented programming languages for years, it was to be considered. Java has been used with the philosophy of writing once, run anywhere. Its massive support of implemented libraries and web support make it worth reviewing. Foremost, the main advantages of this language are mentioned below:

5 Modularity and Extension: Java is dynamic and modular This makes it easier for programmers to divide and conquer problems much easier. Platform Independent: Java s main advantage is the ability to move code easily across various platform without rewriting code for different platform version. Making it a wide cross platform language. Java is multithreaded: Multi Threaded capability allows to perform several tasks simultaneously in the program. Making robust and versatile. Three Database Management Systems: 1. The MySQL DBMS: What is the major advantages of this DBMS? MySQL has been standardized and used by fast growing organizations over last few years.the GUI that MySQL gives makes it easier to work and handle queries easily. With only a few simple SQL statements, you can build and interact with MySQL.It is very powerfull and brings seuirity features that make the DBMS roboust.the main advantages of MySQL are listed below: Security: MySQL includes solid data security layers that protect sensitive data from intruders. If a transaction is interrupted, the transaction is not executed and none parties are affected. Rights can be set to allow some or all privileges to individuals. Passwords are encrypted. Scalability :MySQL can manage up to 50 million rows or more. The default file size limit is about 4 GB. Making it very useful to manage big data and different relations. Multiplatform support: MySQL supports many of modern web frameworks used today such as Ruby Rails as mentioned before. Making it easy to integrate and apply. 2. The DB2 DBMS by IBM: What is the major advantages of this DBMS? Next we consider one of the most powerful and cross platform DBMS used over the world. IBM S DB2. As IBM S Philosophy states its is a next generation data platform for transactional and analytical operations. It provides continuous availability of data to keep transactional workflows and analytics operating at maximum efficiency. As a result, the main advantages are described below: Strong Query Language Support: DB2 offers the support of object tables, java method support, user defined functions and many language supports. It has a nice interface that makes it easy to do queries. In addition contains embedded versions in most mobile systems.

6 PureXML: DB2 allows to work directly with XML in its native format. Simplifying database design and reduction of XML applications. Time Travel Query: DB2 offers the ability of maintaining a record of queries done on the past and future without having to build a temporal infrastructure. 3. The Postegre SQL DBMS: What is the major advantages of this DBMS? Cross Platform: PostgreSQL is available for almost every brand of Unix (34 platforms with the latest stable release), and Windows compatibility is available via the Cygwin framework. Native Windows compatibility is also available with version 8.0 and above. Three App Development tools Management Systems: 1. The PhoneGap App development Tool: What is the major advantage of this app development tool? Support of platforms: The most advantage of PhoneGap is that it support all major Operating systems (i.e Windows,Mac,Linux,Solaris). Web oriented: Titanium is used mainly to help the development when the app interacts with a web service since the application itself is developed by using web technologies. This had a great impact not only on simplifying the development process, but also on saving the overhead needed to elaborate the information exchanged through the remote communication. Three Web programming tools: 1. JQuery Mobile What is the major advantage of this Web Programming tool? Supports of Platforms: Website can be seen in the original form in all major Browsers. Layout and theming engine: Highly Extensible and Customizable theme and layout engine. 2. Ruby on Rails What is the major advantage of this Web Programming tool?

ALso the concept of Ruby is based on high level programing making it easier to developers to adapt. 3. BootStrap What is the major advantage of this Web Programming tool? The Grid: With Bootstrap fixed layers or fluid, Web Pages customization can be done without altering the main theme work. Also responsive design touches can be done and customized with full implementation in the overall theme. Tools we are going to use: 1.Web Programing: BootStrap Its UI customization are critical for our project in the crowd Sourcing Area. It helps us predefine the user experience to a higher point matched only by commercial products. 2.App Development tools Management Systems: PhoneGap Its Ability to write code in raw HTML and JavaScript gives the team an opportunity to adapt the code directly from the web page to the Phone Application, this decreasing the app development time. Also facilitating the communication between the DBMS and the app. 3.DBMS: MySQL Its online support its unparalleled and hard to compare with its competitors.
