Prestigious Awards and Fellowships 1 Welcome to the Office of Academic Enhancement The Office of Academic Enhancement (OAE) was created by the Office of the Provost in an effort to provide all students with opportunities that will enhance their undergraduate studies and create unique experiences related to their academic and career goals. The office comprises the Honors Program, the Academic and Career Advisor in Residence (ACAR) Program, Prestigious Awards and Fellowships, Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA), and Programs of Academic Excellence, such as the Ronald A. Hammonds Scholarship Program and the Gates Millennium Scholars.

2 Letter from the Director Dear Prospective Scholar, The Office of Academic Enhancement addresses the unique demands of the academic careers of highly talented undergraduate students, particularly in relation to their applications for national fellowship programs and graduate or professional degrees. Self-exploration and personal discovery are important aspects of the application and mentoring process for prestigious awards. The office provides undergraduate students with a range of services to maximize their candidacy for prestigious awards, fellowships, and scholarships. We actively promote awareness of scholarship and fellowship opportunities and provide individual mentoring to help students prepare their applications. Our Prestigious Awards and Fellowships advisors meet with each potential applicant to review the application packet, personal statement, and other materials to ensure that each student is submitting the strongest, most complete impression of his or her candidacy. Requirements for each award are noted in this booklet, as well as on the Prestigious Awards and Fellowships and Office of Academic Enhancement websites and You can also find information in the Honors Program Office, the Office of Academic Enhancement, the Residential Colleges, and the Toppel Career Center Library. I personally encourage you to begin your search today. Please contact the University of Miami campus representative, Kefryn Reese, Director, Prestigious Awards and Fellowships, at or via at prestigiousawards@miami.edu to schedule your first advising appointment. We look forward to working with you throughout the application process. Sincerely, John F. Barker, Ph.D. Assistant Provost of Undergraduate Education Director of the Office of Academic Enhancement and Honors Program

Application Process 3 The Application Process The true value in applying for these highly competitive awards is not solely in the winning but also in the process of preparing your application and working with a mentor. The entire experience results in a selfexploration and personal discovery that will enhance your education, wherever your future studies and career interests may lead you. PRACTICE AND PREPARATION n Explore each award that interests you to become well acquainted with the criteria and how it matches your own goals and aspirations. Thoroughly research the foundation funding the fellowship and any graduate schools affiliated with it. n Schedule an appointment with a prestigious award advisor for personalized assistance in refining your application. n Many awards are for graduate study. The spring semester of your junior year is the latest you should begin planning for the deadlines in the following academic year. Sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply for some awards. Sometimes earning previous awards (like the Barry M. Goldwater or the Thomas R. Pickering) can be an indicator of future success with larger fellowships (such as the Marshall or Rhodes). n Scholarship applications require multiple letters of recommendation. Forge good relationship with professors, advisors, administrators, and other employers. n Give yourself enough time to request letters of recommendation and have personal statements, essays, and research proposals edited several times by your prestigious award advisor and multiple faculty members. THINKING ABOUT APPLYING FOR A PRESTIGIOUS AWARD? Contact: READY TO SUBMIT n Candidates for scholarships requiring institutional endorsement must first submit all of the materials requested for the scholarship application to the Office of Prestigious Awards and Fellowships. Please note: Our campus deadlines for you to receive institutional endorsement are significantly earlier than the deadlines posted by the scholarship programs. Please check our website for each specific campus application deadline. n Candidates for scholarships that do not require institutional endorsement are strongly encouraged to submit their application materials at least three weeks before the foundation s deadline date to ensure adequate time is available to revise your application. A prestigious award advisor can help ensure that you are submitting the best, most complete impression of you. Kefryn Reese Director of Prestigious Awards and Fellowships Center for Student Services Building 21 Room Y prestigiousawards@miami.edu n A campus committee will review all materials and, for some awards, conduct an interview. Many foundations limit the number of nominees each university can submit; therefore, the number of UM-endorsed applicants will be confirmed through a faculty committee.

4 Beyond Academics B E Y O N D Most selection committees look for students who bring a wealth of experiences from both inside and outside the classroom. Throughout your college career, don t limit yourself to a total immersion in strictly academic endeavors. As early as your freshman year, participate in activities that will enhance your future scholarship application. 10 8 Prestigious Awards and Fellowships American-Scandinavian Foundation Award The American-Scandinavian Foundation s (ASF) award program for study and research abroad has been the foundation s most long-standing commitment to educational exchange. The ASF offers fellowships (up to $23,000) and grants (normally $5,000) to individuals to pursue research or study in all fields in one or more Scandinavian countries for up to one year. n Must have a well-defined research or study project that makes a stay in Scandinavia essential. n U.S. citizen or permanent resident. n Must have completed undergraduate education by the start of the project in Scandinavia. n The ASF considers it desirable that all candidates have at least some ability in the language of the host country, even if it is not essential for the execution of the research plan. For projects that require a command of one or more Scandinavian (or other) languages, candidates should defer application until they have the necessary proficiency. May 2011 Application available online. Early November 2011 Completed application and required documentation must be submitted to the ASF. March 2012 Decisions announced. The American-Scandinavian Foundation is the leading cultural and educational link between the U.S. and Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. An American nonprofit organization, the ASF works to build international understanding with an extensive program of fellowships, grants, intern/trainee sponsorship, publishing, and membership offerings. During the past 94 years, more than 3,800 fellowships and grants have been given to Americans and Scandinavians engaged in study or research projects. The number of awards varies each year according to total funds available. Awards are made in all fields. The ASF requires confirmation of invitation or affiliation from the institution or individuals detailed in the proposal. Because July and August are traditionally holiday months in Scandinavia, many people may not be available for consultation. Projects should be planned to fall within the summer 2012 to summer 2013 period. Grants are considered especially suitable for postgraduate scholars, professionals, and candidates in the arts to carry out research or study visits of one-month to three-months duration. Fellowships are intended to support a year-long stay. Priority is given to candidates at the graduate level for dissertation-related study of research.

Prestigious Awards and Fellowships 17 Echoing Green Fellowship Program To accelerate social change, Echoing Green invests in and supports outstanding emerging social entrepreneurs to launch new organizations that deliver bold, high-impact solutions. Through a two-year fellowship program, Echoing Green helps a network of visionaries work to solve deeply rooted social, environmental, economic, and political inequities to ensure equal access and to help all individuals reach their potential. n 18 years of age or older. n Sufficient English fluency to participate in interviews and Echoing Green events. n Can be citizens of any nationality, and organizations can be based in any country. However, if the applicant is not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and does not have legal status to work in the U.S., no services in connection with their fellowship may be performed in the United States. This is not an academic scholarship program. Echoing Green Fellows work in the community to launch, manage, and grow organizations that implement and continually expand their ideas for creating lasting social change. The goal of this fellowship is to create a dynamic organization by identifying and supporting talented yet unproven social entrepreneurs. Applicants must present compelling and original ideas for addressing and resolving the root cause of a tough social challenge. Applicants may be an individual or a partnership of two individuals. Organizations must be independent and autonomous and must not be started under the direction of an existing organization. The applicant must be the primary decision-maker for the organization s development and management. Generally, organizations with fiscal sponsors are still considered autonomous. Organizations must be in a start-up phase. To be considered a start-up, the applicant may have been running the organization full-time for approximately two years, and Echoing Green s financial support should qualify it as a major/ primary early funder. Applicants who have worked on their organization on a part-time basis only or have yet to start an organization are generally eligible. Applicants must make a full-time commitment, defined as a minimum of 35 hours per week, to the organization s development. Fellows are expected to resign from their current employment. When partnerships (organizations led by two individuals) apply, both partners must make a full-time commitment of no fewer than 35 hours per week to the development of the organization. Applicants must commit to lead their organization for at least two years. Students who apply will not be eligible for their fellowship stipend if their organization is put on hold due to time commitment conflicts with their studies. The Echoing Green Fellowship Grant provides both technical and financial support for two years for individuals ($30,000 per year) or partnerships ($45,000 per year). The stipend can be used for any purpose related to the start-up of the organization or project. Echoing Green also offers support through a variety of media, including the Internet, conferences, site visits, and phone contact. Guidance in areas such as strategic and financial planning, staff and board development, fundraising, legal and accounting practices, and many other aspects of starting and building a nonprofit organization also is available. October November 2011 Initial applications are accepted online only at Partners must submit a joint application for their project.

18 Prestigious Awards and Fellowships Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics Essay Contest The Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics Essay Contest is an annual competition designed to challenge college students to analyze the urgent ethical issues confronting them in today s complex world. Students are encouraged to write thought-provoking personal essays that raise questions, single out issues, and present rational arguments for ethical action. n U.S. citizens as well as international students are encouraged to apply. n Applicants must be registered undergraduate fulltime juniors or seniors during the fall 2011 semester. December 2011 Completed application and required documentation must be submitted to The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity. Elie Wiesel and his wife, Marion, established The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity after he was awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize for Peace. The foundation s mission, rooted in the memory of the Holocaust, is to combat indifference, intolerance, and injustice through international dialogue and youth-focused programs that promote acceptance, understanding, and equality. The foundation s Prize in Ethics Essay Contest was established in 1989 to encourage college students to explore ethical dimensions of their education. Since then, thousands of students from hundreds of colleges and universities across the nation have participated. Through their writing, they explored their concerns and beliefs, their fears, and their hopes. The essay should range from 3,000 to 4,000 words and be thoroughly thought-out, tightly focused, original, and imaginative. It should exemplify an eloquent writing style and a clear expression of a position that genuinely grapples with an ethical dilemma. Prizes offered range from first prize of $5,000 to an honorable mention of $500. All submissions to the essay contest are judged anonymously. A distinguished committee reviews the essays and a jury that includes Elie Wiesel chooses the winners. Please note that no manuscripts will be returned, and essays may not be submitted elsewhere until the awards have been announced. Winning essays become the property of The Elie Wiesel Foundation and may not be reproduced elsewhere without written permission.

Prestigious Awards and Fellowships 19 Fannie and John Hertz Foundation Fellowship The Hertz Foundation supports graduate students working toward a Ph.D. in the applied physical, biological, and engineering sciences. The foundation does not support study in pursuit of an M.D. or work in descriptive biology, although it may support the Ph.D. portion of a joint M.D./Ph.D. study program. The Graduate Fellowship Award consists of a cost-of-education allowance and a stipend. The cost-of-education allowance is accepted by all of the tenable schools (see website for details). n U.S. citizen or permanent resident willing to morally commit to making your skills available to the United States in time of national emergency (see the Moral Commitment section on the website). n College seniors wishing to pursue a Ph.D. in any of the fields of particular interest to the foundation, as well as graduate students already doing so. n Demonstrate qualities the foundation believes are essential ingredients of future professional accomplishment and/or reasonably reliable indicators of future professional success. n Must be students of the applied physical, biological, and engineering sciences. The Hertz Fellowship empowers these outstanding young people with the freedom to innovate and explore their genius in collaboration with leading professors in the field. Hertz Fellows continue to succeed in this endeavor by providing leading ideas, invaluable public service and economic accomplishments in science, business, government and academia. The foundation screens applicants for qualities they believe are essential ingredients of future professional accomplishment and/or reasonably reliable leading indicators of future professional success. These include: October 2011 Completed online application and required documentation must be submitted to the Hertz Foundation. April 2012 All applicants are notified by mail of the foundation s action on their application. Exceptional intelligence and creativity with particular emphasis on those aspects pertinent to technical endeavors Excellent technical education evidenced not only by transcripts and reference reports from senior technical professionals, but also by the results of a personal, technical interview Orientation and commitment to the applications of the physical sciences as is typical of most applicants Extraordinary accomplishment in technical or related professional studies, which may offset slightly lower academic records or add luster to outstanding ones Features of temperament and character conducive to high attainment as a technical professional the assessment of which is difficult, albeit important to the foundation Appropriate moral and ethical values of considerable interest to the foundation in the furthering of our basic goals Leverage in terms of what difference the fellowship is likely to make in the kind, quality, and/or personal creativity of the student s graduate research
