1 IADE-U Instituto de Arte, Design and Enterprise - University REGULATION ON 1 ST AND 2 ND CYCLE STUDIES This document governs the 1 st and 2 nd Study Cycles, following the reform introduced into Higher Education in Portugal by the Bologna Process and, above all, reflects the Institute s concern in defining the guiding principles of education and assessment of students performance, in line with this new educational paradigm. The legislative amendments under the Bologna Process required the adoption of a regulation providing for the principles applicable to the creation of a European higher education space and the enactment of the rules of Decree-law 42/2005, of 22 February, Decree-law 74/2006, of 24 March, Law 62/2007, of 10 September, and Decree-law 107/2008, of 25 June. This regulation on 1 st and 2 nd Cycle Studies shall be intended for all students attending the first and second cycles, with particular focus on the new forms of teaching and learning within the development of the Bologna Process, defining the first cycle as the acquisition of general competences in order to enable the integration in the labour market steered to learning, or the desirable continuation to the second cycle, and hence professionalization. After consulting the competent academic bodies, the Regulation of the 1 st and 2 nd Study Cycles of IADE-U is approved by the Management Council of IADE-U Instituto de Arte, Design e Empresa - Universitário.

2 Article 1 Scope 1. This Regulation governs the system applicable to the undergraduate and masters courses taught in Instituto de Arte, Design e Empresa Universitário, hereinafter referred to as IADE-U. 2. This Regulation applies to all students attending the degrees identified in the preceding paragraph. 3. This Regulation includes the academic, cultural and social values and ethical principles to be considered when regulating the learning assessment process, and provides the general rules concerning assessment and registration procedures and school progression, to be adopted in the study cycles leading to the achievement of the undergraduate and masters degrees in IADE-U. Article 2 Study scheme 1. The study cycles leading to the undergraduate and masters degrees, hereinafter referred to as study cycles, shall be organised by course semesters. 2. The total duration of the academic year shall be forty weeks, including the assessment periods. 3. The total number of each student s weekly workload, including independent work, shall not exceed forty hours. 4. Independent work shall be more than 50% of the total workload. 5. The school calendar shall take into consideration the specificity of the Study Cycle and the general guidelines defined annually by the Scientific Council and the Pedagogical Council of IADE-U. 6. Posting the periods of class attendance shall be the sole responsibility of the of the Management Council of IADE-U. 7. Grounds for absences to each course unit shall be submitted in a form, addressed to the Course Coordinator concerned, who shall decide based on criteria of equity and proportionality applicable to each case. Article 3 Concepts For the purposes of this Regulation, the following shall be taken to mean: a) Academic year the student is attending the year corresponding to the course units of the study plan in the year which the student has enrolled in. b) Assessment element any component of the teaching-learning process eligible for assessment, either as attendance or as the autonomous work of the student, namely class attendance and participation, reports and/or assignments, bibliographical survey and statistical survey. 2

3 c) Assessment period any component of the teaching-learning process eligible for assessment, which must necessarily be done in a scheduled time-space, with a preestablished duration and in the presence of the teacher, namely a written exam, an oral exam, a monitored laboratory exercise, monitored field work and project presentation and defence. d) Academic semester the time comprising the academic period and the final assessment period. e) Academic year the period when classes take place. f) First cycle the study cycle leading to the undergraduate degree. Second cycle the study cycle leading to the masters degree. h) Third cycle the study cycle leading to the doctoral degree. Article 4 Undergraduate degree The undergraduate degree shall be granted to students who have obtained 180 ECTS, with the regular duration of six academic semesters, in accordance with Article 9 of Decree-law 74/2006, of 24 March and Decree-law 107/2008, of 25 June. Article 5 Masters degree The masters degree shall be granted to students who have obtained a total of 120 ECTS credit units with the regular duration of four academic semesters, in accordance with Article 18 in Decree-law 74/2006, of 24 March, and Decree-law 107/2008, of 25 June. Article 6 Degrees in association IADE-U shall be able to associate with other higher education establishments, National or international, regarding study cycles leading to the undergraduate or masters degree, as provided for in Chapter VI of Decree-law 74/2006, of 24 March, and in an appropriate regulation. Article 7 Study plan The study plan of the undergraduate and masters courses shall be subject to the rules present in the regulating order of the Ministry of Education and Science governing it, stipulating in the form of credits, the work to be performed in each course unit. Article 8 3

4 Crediting system 1. Courses shall be organised according to the crediting system, pursuant to Decree-law 42/2005, of 22 February. 2. Each course unit corresponds to a semester thematic-didactic unit, notwithstanding the following paragraph. 3. Exceptionally, and by substantiated proposal of the Scientific Council, ratified by the responsible bodies, there may be: a. a pool of semester course units; b. course units working as modules throughout the semester. Article 9 Admission to the first cycle Access and admission to the study cycle leading to the undergraduate degree shall be set by appropriate diplomas and regulations. Article 10 Admission to the first cycle 1. Students be eligible to be admitted to the second cycle leading to the masters degree shall: a. have an undergraduate degree or a legal equivalent; b. have a foreign higher education degree, granted after a first study cycle established according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a State adhering to this Process; c. have a foreign higher education degree recognised as compliant with the purposes of an undergraduate degree by the Scientific Council of IADE-U; d. have an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognised as proof of the ability to take this study cycle by the Scientific Council of IADE-U. 2. Candidates with an undergraduate degree obtained in four years or more may be given equivalence to the curricular part of the course, and the final average of the degree shall be considered for awarding the classification to the sixty credits granted. Undergraduate degrees benefiting from this shall be subject to the decision of the Scientific Council of IADE-U. 3. The conditions of an educational and academic nature, the rules of application, the process of establishing and publishing vacancies, and application deadlines and further operating conditions of the masters courses will be posted after deliberation of the Management Council of IADE-U, and after the Scientific Council and Pedagogical Council have been heard. 4. Students who finish a first cycle undergraduate course in IADE-U shall not be subject to numerus clausus for registering in the second cycle. Article 11 Induction course units 4

5 The group of induction course units shall not exceed 30 ECTS and to complete the course students shall have to pass these units. Marks obtained in these units shall not be considered in the final course mark. Article 12 Full time registration 1. In each academic year, students register in a series of course units of the academic year of registration, corresponding to a maximum of sixty course credits / ECTS European credit transfer system units. 2. Students with dropped credits relating to previous academic years shall only register in course units whose total number does not exceed ninety course credits / ECTS European credit transfer system units. 3. Registration in a given academic year presupposes registration in every course unit dropped concerning that year. 4. After concluding an academic year, students shall be considered to have passed that same year when the implementation of the provisions in Article 10(1)(2)(3) results in the registration in the subsequent academic year. 5. Students admitted for the first time in the first year of a first cycle or second cycle shall automatically be registered in all the course units of the first year of such cycles. Article 13 Part-time registration 1. Students in a part-time system are those who have registered in a IADE-U course leading to a formal academic degree under this regulation and who, at the time of registration, choose that system, registering in a number of course units corresponding to less than 30 ECTS, in each academic year. 2. Requests for the Part-Time system shall be made upon registration at the beginning of each academic year, being independent from the access scheme. 3. Requests for the Part-Time system shall be valid for one academic year. 4. When registering in each academic year, students may apply to change from the Part-Time system to the Full Time system, and vice-versa. Article 14 Registration in course units 1. Registration shall be done either by students registered in a higher education course or by other interested parties. 2. Registration shall be done either in a system subject to assessment or not. 3. The course units in which students register subject to assessment and in which they pass: a. shall be subject to certification; 5

6 b. shall be credited, if registered students have acquired or come to acquire the status of students of a higher education study cycle; c. shall be included in the supplement to the diploma to be issued. Article 15 Registration of students of the first cycle in course units of the second cycle 1. Students registered in the first cycle may register in course units of the second cycle, as long as they comply with the provisions in Article 12 or 13 depending on the registration scheme. 2. The course units of the second cycle in which the student has been approved shall be credited after the conclusion of the first cycle and subsequent enrolment in the second study cycle. 3. The aforementioned shall not apply to the course units of project design and dissertation, professional project or professional internship, integrated in the study plan of the second cycle. Article 16 Teaching and learning methods 1. Teaching/learning methods shall be diversified and in line with the expected learning aims and outcomes of the course, in order to provide: a. suitable levels of student performance; b. the promotion of competences which, as soon as possible, lead the student to acquire, on the one hand, independent work methods and, on the other hand, the ability to work in collaboration; c. responsible attitudes and behaviours from the students, either during their training period or throughout their active life. 2. The teaching and learning methods of each course unit shall be defined according to the following parameters: a. type of class attendance; b. Items which characterise the student s independent work. 3. Class attendance includes the following characteristics, among others: a. theory; b. theory-practical; c. practical and laboratorial; d. field work; e. seminar; f. internship; g. tutorial orientation. 6

7 4. Independent work shall be developed by students according to the following methods, among others: a. acquisition and systematisation of knowledge through the reading list supporting each course unit; b. acquisition and systematisation of knowledge through consultation of specific literature supporting the elaboration of written synthesis/monograph assignments; c. elaboration of iconography exercises to develop cognitive skills and artistic knowledge; d. Projects; e. elaboration of written synthesis/monograph assignments and their oral presentation; f. autonomous supplementary work developed in laboratory, in the field or in other conditions, intended to consolidate practical competences/expertise or for project development; g. preparation for final assessment. Article 17 Ethical principles and fundamental values 1. At IADE-U, the learning assessment process shall be developed with respect for values of authenticity, justice and intellectual honesty. 2. According to paragraph 1, fraud in the learning assessment practice shall be institutionally sanctioned. To this effect, several instances and levels of intervention (Rector, Department Directors, Pedagogical Council and teachers) shall adopt, exclusively within the academic context, various measures (pedagogical, organisational, procedural and disciplinary). 3. Typification, graduation and sanction of frauds in the learning assessment processes shall be standardised in the Students Disciplinary Regulation. Article 18 Assessment methods 1. Learning assessment can be one of three types: a) continuous assessment; b) periodic assessment; a. final assessment. Article 19 Definitions 1. Learning assessment shall mean the process by which the performance levels of students shall be assessed (knowledge, competences and attitudes) concerning the expected learning outcomes. 2. Learning shall be assessed: 7

8 a. through processes allowing to constantly ascertain the students performance level (knowledge, competences, attitudes) concerning the expected learning outcomes, i.e., a continuous assessment; b. through processes allowing to ascertain, in specific moments, the students performance level (knowledge, competences, attitudes) concerning the expected learning outcomes, i.e., a periodic assessment. c. through processes allowing to ascertain, at a pre-set final moment, the students performance level (knowledge, competences, attitudes) concerning the expected learning outcomes, i.e., a final assessment. Article 20 Assessment methods 1. The learning assessment methods in each course unit shall consider: a) the characteristics of the study cycle; b) the learning outcomes expected in the course unit and corresponding work hours; c) teaching and learning methods; d) programme contents; e) the resources supplied to students. 2. The performance assessment of students in teaching and learning modalities without attendance requirements shall ensure the authenticity of the elements serving as its foundations. 3. The aims of assessment exams shall be clearly defined and focus on the specific competences of each course unit. Article 21 Assessment tools 1. The tools required to assess learning shall be varied, according to each study cycle and course unit, and shall include: i. summative written tests; ii. individual assignments, written, oral or experimental; iii. group assignments, written, oral or experimental; iv. portfolios; v. practical problems; vi. tasks; vii. observation of attitudes and behaviours; viii. final assessment; ix. internship report; x. project work; 8

9 xi. dissertation or thesis. 2. The assessment and subsequent marks shall be individual, even when referring to group assignments. 3. Marks resulting from the application of the methods mentioned in paragraph 1 shall always be made public. Article 22 Assessment elements 1. The minimum number of assessment methods necessary to obtain a final mark for each student s performance shall be two, in course units under continuous or periodic assessment, using one or more assessment tools. 2. There may be exceptions to the previous paragraph in cases where assessment refers to a portfolio, internship report or internship, project work, dissertation or thesis. 3. The teacher responsible for the course unit shall choose the nature and number of assessment elements to be adopted and shall also be responsible, considering the provisions in this Regulation, for informing the students at the start of the course unit which method shall be used, relating it to the expected learning results, contents and teaching methods. 4. The teacher responsible for the course unit shall inform the Course Coordinator and the Coordinator of the Scientific Area, within fifteen days before the starting date of each academic year/semester, the assessment method adopted, the weight of the different elements considered for assessment and their marks. 5. The Course Coordinator shall ensure the balance in the number of assessment elements of the several course units, and the harmonisation of the schedule for implementing the pre-set assessment tools. 6. Assessments shall be distributed over the semester. The first numerical assessment (on a scale of 0 to 20) or qualitative assessment (from F to A) shall not exceed eight teaching weeks, except for module course units. a. Assessment weeks: weeks during the semester, especially set aside for assessment. b. Contact hours: working hours during school hours in which the teacher is present. c. Non-contact hours: student study/working hours without the presence of the teacher. d. Assessment activities: activities for assessment (always during the course unit contact hours). This includes delivering a class or works, assessment tests and oral tests of any type. e. Assessment material: documents prepared for assessment (during or outsider contact hours). This includes projects, projectual or analytical exercises and written assignments. Article 23 Continuous assessment 9

10 The list of assessment elements shall correspond to the projectual and analytical, theoreticalpractical and theoretical training contents at IADE-U. The projectual assessment elements and the written and oral assessment elements are continuous assessment elements. Article 24 Characterisation of continuous assessment elements 1. Projectual assessment: teacher shall define the projectual assessment elements according to the total number of hours h (contact and non-contact) of the course unit concerned. 2. In respect of practical-laboratory course units, supervision of work shall be mandatory; therefore, students shall not be allowed to deliver totally unsupervised or monitored work. 3. In respect of Workshop/Laboratory and Studio course units, supervision of works shall be mandatory; therefore, students shall not be allowed to deliver totally unsupervised or monitored work. 4. In respect of theory-practical course units with a total of 150 working hours per semester, exercises shall be done mostly in class; therefore students shall not be allowed to deliver unsupervised or monitored work. 5. Projectual assessment elements: a. Projectual work: analytical and/or projectual work, consisting of a number of phases and distributed fairly across the non-contact hours and during class, under mandatory teacher supervision. b. Projectual or analytical exercise: practical, controlled analytical and/or projectual exercises, to be done mostly in class under mandatory teacher supervision. A maximum number of five exercises per semester (minimum of 15 contact and non-contact hours), with a duration between two to three weeks, including the delivery of the exercise, theory classes, colloquia to present exercises and group discussion. 6. Written assessment elements: a. Written assignments: may be of various types, usually in accordance with Portuguese norms applicable to scientific work (scientific paper, working or interpretation paper, essay and review work), with formal aspects defined by course, branch or option coordinator. b. Test: exercise or comprehensive questionnaire on the topics covered in the preceding period, done during course unit school hours in the weeks set aside for that purpose in the academic calendar. c. Dissertation: written in-depth work on a philosophical, scientific or artistic topic, with formal aspects defined by course, branch or option coordinator. 7. Oral assessment elements: a. Colloquium: oral presentation and discussion on a specialist topic; b. Colloquium Workshop/Laboratory Course Units: oral presentation of the projectual work; c. Delivering a class: public presentation of a topic to simulate a class. 10

11 Article 25 Operating rules 1. Teachers shall always deliver the assessment papers to students, approved by the teacher responsible for the course unit. A copy of the papers shall be submitted to the Coordinator of the scientific area concerned, and shall be kept in the coordination files. 2. The assessment papers shall be handed by the students to the teacher within the prescribed period defined in the papers. Failure to do so shall imply a penalty in the student s marks, as defined in the papers. 3. Assessment tests shall be taken during the academic period, during course unit hours. Students shall be informed of the date and topics to be tested at least 15 days before. The teacher shall sign all test papers handed in. Students shall not be allowed to exit and enter the classroom during the assessment test. Article 26 Grading the course units 1. After each test, teacher shall inform students of their marks and of the correction criteria used. 2. Each student shall be given a mark for each course unit. The final mark for each course unit shall be stated on a numerical scale of zero to twenty, rounded to the nearest unit. Pass marks shall range between ten (10) to twenty (20). Students with marks between zero (0) and nine shall fail. Article 27 Class attendance 1. As the assessment scheme in course units is continuous, class attendance, seminars, workshops and other forms of didactic activities shall be mandatory. 2. The course unit programme shall state the relation between attendance and final marks, including pass conditions. 3. Students who miss more than a third of scheduled classes shall not pass the course unit. This shall not include students under special attendance schemes. 4. Students under special attendance schemes provided for in Article 28 shall contact the course unit teacher in which they are registered, within two weeks after the beginning of the semester, informing them of their situation. Teachers shall inform the students which works have to be done and delivered in order to compensate for their absences. 5. Students not covered by Article 28 who miss classes may hand in a document justifying their absences for reasons of force majeure. Provided it is accepted, this justification shall only be relevant in that it may influence the number of classes missed one third that imply failing the course unit, and shall not be valid for determining the final course mark, whenever class attendance is an assessment element. 11

12 Article 28 Special attendance schemes 1. The following students shall be entitled to special attendance schemes: a. student union leaders; b. top-level athletes; c. military; d. pregnant students; e. new mothers and fathers; f. students with a disability; g. working students; h. extraordinary students; i. students under exchange programmes. 2. The special schemes described above shall be subject to their own regulations. Article 29 Final assessment 1. Final assessment requires an exam on the topics taught in the course unit, in the form of an in-person written exam. 2. A practical assignment may be required for course units with a recognised practical component. 3. Final assessment takes place in three different phases: normal, resit and special. 4. The normal phase takes place in the two weeks following the end of semester. 5. The resit phase takes place during non-teaching times, one week after the end of the normal phase and over a period of one week. 6. The special phase takes place in September and is intended for the following students: a. Students covered by special attendance schemes as provided by the law; b. Final year students who have a limited number of course units to complete, not exceeding 12 ECTS, and can thus complete their course without having to wait for the following academic year. This benefit shall cease after the 2 nd application to take sit special exams. 7. Exams outside the prescribed phases referred to in the preceding paragraphs shall only be allowed in exceptional cases as provided by the law, and duly authorised by the competent bodies of IADE-U. Article 30 Description of final assessment elements 12

13 1. The competent bodies of IADE-U shall appoint a jury panel of three teachers on the proposal of the scientific area coordinator to which the course unit belongs for exams in the normal, resit and special phases,. 2. Exam papers shall be approved by the teacher responsible for the course unit and by the corresponding scientific area coordinator. A copy of the exam papers shall be sent after the exam to the scientific area coordinator to be filed. 3. Grades for students who pass the exams shall be expressed on a numerical scale of ten (10) to twenty (20), rounded to the nearest units, and for students who fail they shall be marked as fail. 4. The jury s decision shall be final, except in the event of a breach of procedures. 5. Should there be an overlap of exam times, students shall have to choose one of the exams. 6. The maximum duration of exams is as follows: for each practical-laboratory course unit, up to twenty (20) hours; for each theory-practical course unit, up to twelve (12) hours; for each theory course unit, up to (2) hours. 7. The marks for the exam to improve grades shall be the final mark of the course unit, except if it is less than the mark obtained at the end of the semester, in which case the semester mark shall prevail as the final course mark. 8. Teachers shall sign all exam papers. The teacher shall sign all test papers handed in. Students shall not be allowed to exit and enter the classroom during the exam. Article 31 Scores The score distribution applied in each assessment element shall be disclosed at the beginning of each assessment. Article 32 Normal exam period Students registered in the corresponding course unit who have not passed in continuous or periodical assessment shall be able to take the exam in the normal exam period. Article 33 Resit exams and exams to improve grades 1. Students who did not pass in the normal exam period, or those who chose to not register in the course unit concerned but still have a valid enrolment for the corresponding academic year shall be able to take the resit exam. 2. Students who have passed a course unit or who have passed in the normal exam period shall be entitled to improve their grades in the resit period. 13

14 3. Students shall be entitled to take no more than two exams to improve their grades in each resit period. 4. Students shall only be able to take one exam to improve their grades for each course unit. 5. Students who have passed a course unit through a resit exam shall not be entitled to improve their grades. Article 34 Registration in normal exam periods 1. Registration in the normal exam period is intended only for students who meet the requirements provided for in Article 29(6) in this Regulation. 2. Students shall only be allowed to apply to a group of course units not exceeding 12 ECTS in the special exam period. 3. Students eligible for the special exam shall register in the Students office no less than 8 days before the date of special exams. Article 35 Contesting final assessments 1. Students shall be entitled to contest their final marks for a period of 48 hours after the results are posted. 2. Teacher shall hand in the grades list to the Academic Affairs office, the exam papers and, for resit exams and grade improvement exams, the corrected and graded exams so that a copy may be given to students if necessary. 3. Requests to review the final marks shall be substantiated. Students shall comply with the periods prescribed for that purpose and pay the appropriate fees. 4. The course coordinator shall appoint a jury panel of 3 teachers on the proposal of the scientific area coordinator of the course unit concerned to review the final marks. 5. If the jury decides on a new mark, this shall be the student s final mark, except if it is less than the previous mark. 6. Whenever the request for a final mark review is considered valid, i.e., if the final mark is adjusted to a higher value, the fee paid shall be returned to the student. Article 36 Student identification 1. Students shall identify themselves properly and legibly in all assessment exams. 2. Student identification shall refer to the student card, identity card or document with a similar purpose. 3. Written exams must be signed by the teacher supervising the classroom where the final assessment takes place. 14

15 4. Failure to comply with the provisions in paragraph 1 above shall invalidate the assessment element, and the student shall fail the assessment. 5. The teacher of each course unit shall keep all assessment elements of each student for a period of one year from the date of the publication of results. Article 37 Prerequisites 1. There shall be no prerequisites in 1 st cycle course units. 2. All 2 nd cycle course units shall precede the dissertation or thesis, project work or internship. Article 38 Final mark of the undergraduate degree 1. A final mark shall be given to the undergraduate degree, between 10 and 20 on a numerical scale between 0 and 20, and its equivalent mark no the European scale of comparability of classifications. 2. To calculate the final mark, all marks obtained in the course units integrating the study plan of the undergraduate course shall be taken in consideration. Article 39 Weighting coefficient To calculate the final mark, marks obtained in each course unit shall be multiplied by its number of credits in the study plan, determined by the arithmetic average of the number of credits with a numerical classification. Article 40 Higher education degree 1. A diploma shall be issued by the Academic Affairs Office of IADE-U for the completion of part of an undergraduate course, corresponding to the group of course units totaling at least 60 credits. This diploma shall correspond to an initial training course in higher education. 2. Marks for each course unit shall be expressed between 10 and 20 on a numerical scale,, and its equivalent mark no the European scale of comparability of classifications. 3. The diploma issued as mentioned in the preceding paragraph shall be accompanied by the supplement to the diploma as provided by Decree-law 42/2005, of 22 February, and Articles 39 and 40 of Decree-law 74/2006, of 24 March, within 15 days after the application for the diploma. Article 41 Undergraduate degree 15

16 1. The undergraduate degree shall be awarded a diploma in accordance with provisions in Article 49 of Decree-law 107/208, of 25 June, accompanied by the supplement to the diploma, under the terms and for the purposes of Article 40 of Decree-law 42/2005, of 22 February. 2. The diplomas and course certificates shall contain: a. Student s full name b. Filiation c. Year of course completion d. Name of course and branch or option, where applicable. e. The signature of the Rector, President of the Scientific Council and President of the Pedagogical Council. f. The embossed seal of IADE-U Article 42 Supervision of dissertation or thesis, project work or internship 1. The preparation of the dissertation or thesis, project work or internship shall be supervised by a teacher with a PhD or a person of merit recognized by the Scientific Council of the Masters Course. 2. Supervision may be provided as co-supervision, by national or foreign supervisors. 3. Supervision may be provided in classes formed for that purpose, chaired by a teacher with a PhD. 4. Where the supervisor is not part of the IADE-U teaching staff, a co-supervisor shall be appointed to be part of the teaching staff of the institute. Article 43 Delivery of thesis or dissertation, project work or internship report 1. The deadline for submitting the thesis or dissertation, project work or internship report shall be the end of the 4 th semester. 2. At the end of this deadline, candidates may submit a written request to the Scientific Committee of the Master s course to extend the delivery limit for three months, provided it has obtained the supervisor(s) consent. 3. The thesis or dissertation shall be delivered in seven paper copies, and in three CD-ROMs, in pdf format. 4. The project work or internship report shall be delivered in nine paper copies, and in five CD-ROMS, in pdf format. 5. Candidates shall also submit seven paper copies of their Curriculum Vitae along with the thesis or dissertation, or nine paper copies of their Curriculum Vitae along with the project work or internship report, according to the European model, as well as a declaration of the 16

17 supervising stating that the dissertation, project work or internship report is ready are ready to be submitted for public scrutiny. 6. The rules applicable to each course taught at IADE-U shall be met in order to standardise the criteria for the submission of theses, dissertations, project work or internship reports. Article 44 Constitution of the jury for the Thesis/Project/Internship course unit 1. The thesis or dissertation, project work or internship report shall be subject to consideration and public discussion by a jury panel appointed by the Rector of IADE-U, on a proposal of the Scientific Council. 2. The jury shall be appointed within 40 days after the delivery of the dissertation, project work or internship report. 3. The jury shall consist of three to five members, including the supervisor or supervisors. 4. The jury members shall be specialists in the field covered by the thesis or dissertation, project work or internship report, and shall be appointed from among national or foreign individuals holders of a PhD degree, or individuals of merit recognized by the Scientific Council and the Scientific Commission of the Master s. 5. The instruction confirming the appointment of the jury shall contain the names of the chairperson and respective substitute in case of impediment, and the terms for contesting the dissertation, work project or internship report. 6. The instruction shall be reported in writing, within five days, to the jury members and to the candidate, and the exam dates shall be publically posted at IADE-U, according to the model in force. Article 45 Proceedings 1. Within 60 days after the jury appointment is published, the jury shall deliver an order stating whether the dissertation is accepted, or whether it recommends the reformulation of the dissertation. 2. If this is the case, the candidate shall have a period of 120 days, non-extendable, in which to a reformulate the dissertation, or declare, in writing, that it wishes to maintain it as is presented. 3. When the dissertation, reformulation or declaration as mentioned in the preceding paragraph is received, the public exam shall be scheduled. 4. The candidate shall be considered as having withdrawn if within the period set in paragraph 2 above it does not deliver the reformulated dissertation, or declare that it waives this option. 5. Exams shall take place within 120 days as from: a. The instruction accepting the dissertation b. The date when the reformulated dissertation is handed in, or the waiver of reformulation. 17

18 Article 46 Discussion 1. The defence of the thesis, project work or internship report shall only take place if at least three jury members are present. 2. All jury members shall participate in the discussion. 3. The defence shall not exceed 60 minutes. 4. The candidate shall be given the same time as that used by the jury. Article 47 Functioning of the jury for course units of thesis/project/internship (if implying a thesis) 1. Jury decisions shall be made by substantiated roll-call, and abstentions shall not be allowed. 2. In case of a tie, the chairman of the jury shall have a casting vote. 3. Minutes of the jury meetings shall be recorded according to the model in force. 4. The functioning of the jury is governed by the provisions in the Code of Administrative Procedure in all matters not provided for in this Regulation. Article 48 Final mark of the master s degree 1. A final mark shall be given to the master s degree, between 10 and 20 on a numerical scale between 0 and 20, and its equivalent mark no the European scale of comparability of classifications. 2. To calculate the final mark, all marks obtained in the course units integrating the study plan of the Master s course and the defence exam of the dissertation, project work or internship report. Article 49 Weighting coefficient To calculate the final mark, marks obtained in each course unit shall be multiplied by its number of credits in the study plan, determined by the arithmetic average of the number of credits with a numerical classification. Article 50 Diploma in advanced higher education 1. A diploma shall be issued by the Academic Affairs Office of IADE-U for the advanced higher education course corresponding to the group of course units totaling at least 60 credits 18

19 2. Marks for each course unit shall be expressed between 10 and 20 on a numerical scale,, and its equivalent mark no the European scale of comparability of classifications. 3. The diploma issued as mentioned in the preceding paragraph shall be accompanied by the supplement to the diploma as provided by Decree-law 42/2005, of 22 February, and Articles 39 and 40 of Decree-law 74/2006, of 24 March, within 15 days after the application for the diploma. Article 51 Master s degree 1. The Master s degree shall be awarded a diploma in accordance with provisions in Article 49 of Decree-law 107/208, of 25 June, accompanied by the supplement to the diploma, under the terms and for the purposes of Article 40 of Decree-law 42/2005, of 22 February.. 2. The diplomas and course certificates shall contain: a. Student s full name b. Filiation c. Year of course completion d. Name of the course and branch and option, where applicable. e. The signature of the Rector, President of the Scientific Council and President of the Pedagogical Council. f. The embossed seal of IADE-U. Article 52 Deadline for issuing the diploma 1. 1 st Cycle diplomas shall be issued within 180 after course completion. 2. 2nd Cycle diplomas shall be issued within 180 days after course completion, after the submission of the receipt of delivery of copies of theses/projects/internship reports to be lodged as referred to in paragraph 1 in the Article below. Article 53 Legal deposit 1. Theses or dissertation, project works and internship reports shall be subject to: a. The deposit of one paper copy and one digital copy in the António Quadros Library, in IADE-U; b. The deposit of one paper copy and one digital copy in the National Library; c. The deposit of one digital copy in the Observatory of Science and Higher Education. 2. The Scientific Committees of Master s courses shall be responsible for depositing the above in the António Quadros Library, in IADE-U. 19

20 3. The António Quadros Library, in IADE-U, shall be responsible for depositing the documents referred to in paragraph 1(b)(c). Article 54 Filing 1. The Management Council of IADE-U shall be responsible for the custody of the original minutes of jury deliberations. 2. The Academic Affairs office shall be responsible for filing and keeping all documents relating to each process. Article 55 Stop the clock provision 1. The deadlines for deliberations by the Scientific Council or Master s jury panels shall be suspended during the school holidays. 2. The stop the clock provision applicable to the delivery, reformulation and public defence of the thesis/project/internship report may be used by the Rector, having heard the Scientific Council, at the request of the interested parties, duly substantiated, in addition to others provided for by the law in the following cases: a. Military service; b. Maternity; c. Serious and prolonged illness of the student, or serious accident, when the situation arises during the deadline for delivering the dissertation; d. On the substantiated proposal of the supervisor or supervisors; e. By other legal impositions. Article 56 Foreign languages The Scientific Council may allow the masters theses and their public defence to be submitted in a foreign language. Article 57 School calendar and timetables 1. The school calendar shall be established every year by the Management Council of IADE-U before the start of the academic year s activities, after consulting the Pedagogical Council. 2. The timetables of the course units of the academic year which the student is attending, and those of dropped course units shall not necessarily be compatible, due to constraints of logistics and management of timetables and teachers. 20

21 Article 58 Recognition, validation and certification of competences The process of recognition, validation and certification of competences and respective proceedings shall be governed by specific regulations. Article 59 Fees and charges 1. The sum of the fees of the 1 st and 2 nd cycle courses shall be established by the responsible entities of IADE-U. 2. Students who withdraw from their courses, or fail to pay the tuition fees within the prescribed deadlines, shall ask the Academic Affairs Office to cancel their enrolment. 3. To attend again, students shall submit a re-entry request. Article 60 Uncertainties of interpretation and omissions Omissions and uncertainties of interpretation in this regulation shall be resolved by decision of the Rector of IADE-U, and the general provisions in the Statutes of IADE-U, shall apply, mutatis mutandis. Article 61 Revision of the regulation This regulation shall be subject to the supervision and inspection of the Scientific Council and the Pedagogical Council of IADE-U, and may be reviewed after a period of one academic year after its entry into effect, and then be reviewed every two years. Article 62 Entry into effect This regulation enters into effect after it is approved by the Scientific Council and the favourable opinion of the Pedagogical Council of IADE-U and advertised according to the law.
