BILL Gates causes people to dream of coming up with a brilliant business idea or business plan which they pursue with passion.
Nature of Work Entrepreneurs are responsible for financing their businesses, when starting out keeping their companies growing. More often the beginning stages of starting a business require a person to be a manager, salesman, customer service representative, and information technologist all in one.
Working Condition A business venture could be anything from a small familyrun business like a restaurant to a full-scale consulting or e- commerce firm. Being an entrepreneur means freedom to decide what business to go into.
Entrepreneurs of all types are dedicated individuals willing to work extremely long hours to make their dreams a reality.
Career Prospect During the next few years, the biggest economic growth is expected to come from small business. Today's economy is hospitable to start-ups, and capital is available for qualified entrepreneurs and imaginative enterprises.
As of 2011 count, there are 820,255 business enterprises operating in the Philippines. Of these, 99.6% (816,759) are micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and the remaining 0.4% (3,496) are large enterprises.
Majority of the MSMEs in operation in 2011 can be found in the National Capital Region (NCR), with 211,974 business establishments Region 4-A (CALABARZON) with 122,562; Region 3 (Central Luzon) with 83,279; Region 7 (Central Visayas) with 50,078; and Region 6 (Western Visayas) with 47,166.
Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) MCU also offers courses in the STEM track such as the following: a. Computer Web Design b. Dental Hygiene c. Pharmacy Aide d. Optical Laboratory Technician
A. Computer Web Design This course equips students without any previous knowledge with the essentials for each and every stage of the complete web design process from the visual aspects to the invisible components of web design.
Using industry standard applications, students enrolling for this course will be able to create effective, attractive websites and have complete knowledge of each step required. Web designing as a career has elevated itself to the enviable status of being one of the lucrative careers of today.
Nature of Work A web designer/developer is responsible for the design, layout and coding of a website. He is involved with the technical and graphical aspects of a website - how the site works and how it looks. He can also be involved with the maintenance and update of an existing site.
He communicates Web Design/ Development techniques and technology effectively to a broad audience in laymen s terms. He demonstrates ability to analyze information and solve problems on a complex, thoughtbased level.
Career Prospect The IT industry is a rapidly expanding global marketplace and the Internet continues to develop at great speed. Web designers are employed across all industry sectors from finance and retail to public organizations.
They may be employed directly by IT consultancies, software houses, web design agencies or work in an organization s IT department. They will have career opportunities as web designers for design marketing and advertising firms, usability specialists working to help companies build strong websites, or a design firm principal who runs his own design firm.
There are job opportunities throughout the UK, with a higher concentration in the South East. There are also opportunities overseas.
B. Dental Hygiene The Dental Hygiene curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for positions in general and specialty dental offices, hospitals, schools, public health agencies and industrial agencies.
Students are trained in educational methods and preventive clinical services which qualify them as dental health educators and competent clinicians. Emphasis is placed on the correlation between prevention, education and the clinical phases of dental hygiene practice as well as basic and social sciences.
Nature of Work Dental Hygienist does patient screening procedures; such as assessment of oral health condition, review of the health history, oral cancer screening, head and neck inspection, dental charting and taking blood pressure, temperature and pulse.
He takes and develops dental radiographs (x-rays). He removes plaque and stains (hard and soft deposits) from all surfaces of teeth. He applies preventative materials to the teeth (e.g., sealants and fluorides). He applies antimicrobial therapies to assist in prevention of oral disease progression.
He teaches patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health. He teaches patients about the relationship between oral health and systemic diseases He counsels patients about good nutrition and its impact on oral health.
Career Prospect Opportunities for part-time work and flexible schedules are common. The majority of hygienists work in private practice dental offices. However, opportunities exist in sales, education and public health clinics, correctional institutions and managed care organizations.
Hygienists are in demand in general dental practices and in specialty practices such as periodontics or pediatric dentistry. They also may be employed to provide dental hygiene services for patients in hospitals, nursing homes and public health clinics.
Depending upon the level of education and experience achieved, dental hygienists can apply their skills and knowledge to other career activities such as teaching hygiene students in dental schools and dental hygiene education programs.
Research, office management and business administration are other career options. Employment opportunities also may be available with companies that market dental-related materials and equipment.
C. Pharmacy Aide Pharmacy revolves around people and medicines with special emphasis on the manufacture of medicines, their supply, appropriate use and effects.
The ultimate concern of pharmacy is to ensure that the patient receives the appropriate medicines and benefits from their proper use.
Nature of Work Pharmacy aide helps licensed pharmacists with administrative duties in running a pharmacy.
He refers any questions regarding prescriptions, drug information, or health matters to a pharmacist. Aides have several important duties that help the pharmacy to function smoothly.
Working Condition Pharmacy aide works in pharmacy and drug stores, grocery stores, or hospitals where the environment is generally the same: well-lit, clean, open, well-ventilated, and organized. He can work mornings, evenings, weekends, and even some holidays depending on the employer.
Career Prospect Local and international job opportunities for full-time and part-time work are expected to be good.
Employment of pharmacy aides is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2014 because of the increasing use of medication in treating patients.
a greater number of middleaged and elderly people who use more prescription drugs than younger people will spur demand for aides in all practice settings.
D. Optical Laboratory Technician Are you fascinated with how the eye works? Do you want to assist optometrists with providing vision correction to patients? If so, you might find a career as an optometric technician is right for you.
An optical laboratory technician is a valuable asset to an optometrist and is extraordinarily helpful for the patients who visit any optometryrelated healthcare setting. They are not limited to just one area when it comes to duties and responsibilities, so an individual who is able to handle numerous and diverse tasks will excel at this kind of career.
Nature of Work An Optical Laboratory Technician, under the supervision of the practitioner, assists in the provision of general optometric care: specifically, in the maintenance and minor repair of the instrumentation and equipment in the office.
He gathers initial intake testing and technical information from the patient; recording information from the practitioner. He implements a wide variety of therapeutic procedures and devices with the patient.
He gives detailed explanation of the doctor's advice and recommendation to the patient, and performing specialty testing in areas requested by the doctor. Duties will also include fabrication and inspection of spectacles after glasses have been prescribed by the doctor; calculation of measurements as they specifically relate to the patient's facial features, spectacles chosen and lenses to be ordered.
Working Condition Optical Laboratory Technicians work in a private office, clinic, government agency or military. They may also focus on the laboratory side of the job and work in eyeglass design. They may work in educational programs, typically in the workforce, focusing on teaching employees about eye safety.
They can choose part-time, fulltime, weekends on, or off, and if they have their own practice they can choose to work for half the year and do other things the other half of the year. Flexibility is definitely available when it comes to an Optometry career.
Career Prospect According to the National Employment Matrix from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for dispensing opticians is expected to increase at a rate of 13 percent through As the aging population grows, the need for corrective lenses will increase.
The BLS predicts very good job prospects due to the need to fill the jobs of dispensing opticians who retire or depart from this occupation. Optometry as a career option brings lucrative opportunities. They are of great repute in the United States, as a major part of the population wears contact lenses or glasses.
There are probabilities of increase in the demand of optometrists, as some of the leading nations have now decided to make Optometrics solely responsible for providing eye care services.
