1 Clarence Sansom School Avenue NE, Calgary, AB T1Y 6G4 t f ClarenceSansom@cbe.ab.ca Grade 7 Option Course Guide 2013/2014 ART (VISUAL) Art 7 Art 7 is a multi-disciplinary art class with an introduction to the basics of visual art. We will complete projects using a variety of media, including drawing, sculpture and painting. Students will learn about the elements and principles of design, formal elements of composition and colour theory. This class will provide students with the skills to create two and three-dimensional works. Drawing Drawing is an introduction to the basic principles and elements of drawing, methods and materials and is a suitable class for anyone, no matter what your experience. Throughout the term, we will have the opportunity to learn about a variety of drawing techniques through hands on experience, and through the study of art history. Additionally, we will view the artwork of local artists to help get your creative juices flowing. Mixed Media This class will explore the elements and principles of art in the art making process. In this class you will be exposed to a variety of art materials, both conventional and unconventional as you make unique and interesting pieces of art. Painting Painting 7 is an introduction to basic painting methods and materials. You will learn about a range of painting techniques through hands on experience and through the exploration of the history behind the art. This class will provide you with an opportunity to be creative, demonstrate care and attention to detail while learning a new skill. Please note: A $5.00 materials fee will be charged. Printmaking In this class you will use a variety of printmaking tools and mediums as you create your own unique designs. Through the term you will have an opportunity to try different printing techniques. We will explore the use of print and graphics and better understand the role that printmaking plays in our lives. Sculpture Sculpture 7 is an introduction to the visual medium of sculpture. Using, both conventional and unconventional materials, you will have the opportunity to create unique and interesting sculptural pieces this term. Throughout the term we will view some traditional as well as non-traditional sculptural works. (continued on next page)

BUSINESS & INFORMATION PROCESSING Dragon s Den 7 Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be an entrepreneur or inventor, create your own product, and sell it to the world? Have you ever watched the inventors and entrepreneurs on TV s Dragons Den? Join us in Dragon s Den 7 and learn how to identify a need in the market, design and build a product prototype, and promote it to the school and then to the world! Once students have designed their product and created a marketing plan, they will produce a television ad for their invention. Before the end of the term, you will go before the Dragon s Den and your classmates with the possibility of winning the Grand Prize for the best product idea and promotion campaign. Keyboarding Would you like to be able to type your report or essay quickly and have more free time? Would you like to be faster at typing on chat? Then this class is for you! This class focuses on developing keyboarding skills while gaining speed, and accuracy. We will work on this important life skill through both an online typing program and interactive games that you can play individually and with friends. COMMUNICATION, MEDIA & DESIGN TECHNOLOGY D2L, Microsoft & Google Apps for Education (GAFE) Do you like computers, ipads, and mobile devices? Do you like completing assignments with technology instead of using a pen and paper? Well, here is your opportunity to work with these technologies and learn how to use them to support your learning. In this class, we will work within the new D2L classrooms and learn how to properly use Microsoft Word/PowerPoint and GAFE on. Bring activities or projects from your class or come with your own creative ideas to apply to your assignments! At the beginning of this class, students will also complete tasks on digital citizenship and all assignments will be submitted electronically. Digital Photography 7 If you want to learn the secrets to taking a great photograph, then this is the class for you. We begin by examining the basic elements that go into a great photograph. Students will then practice taking different types of photos from action to stills, panoramas to portraits, and micros to macros. Students will then be encouraged to use their photographs and graphics to focus attention on a problem they see in the world today. Do you have a cause that you care about? Use photography to make a 2 8
3 difference! Towards the end of the terms, students will choose their best work and have an opportunity to display their work for all to admire. Film Production 7 (Animation) Using the school computers, Students will learn about techniques and some of the software available for producing their own computer animation short films. Along with making computer generated animations, students will also have the option to use our digital cameras and experiment with claymation or stop action filming techniques. The best and most creative animations win prizes and are eligible to be shown to the large audience at the school s Fine Arts show later this year. Film Production 7 (Live Action) Do you want to become a movie star? Here s where you start! Students work in groups to write a script, produce a storyboard, rehearse and perform in a short film production. Students will learn about different types of filming shots and how to use imovie software to edit their production, creating a final polished film worthy of being viewed by peers and parents alike. Along with live action filming using our digital cameras, students will also have the option to use claymation or stop action filming techniques. GarageBand Do you know how to create and mix music? Have you ever recorded a podcast and published it to itunes to share with your family and friends? Well, if you would like to work on these skills, this is the class for you! In this class, students will work within a D2L shell online. Students will be required to complete tasks outlined within this shell, which will focus on the Mac program GarageBand. Students will create their own podcast on a topic of their choosing and also have an opportunity to work with music tracks. Students will create music using the sounds available through Garageband or by recording their own sounds. Also, music from your favorite artists can be brought in to mix together, just like DJ s do! At the beginning of this class, students will also complete tasks on digital citizenship and copyright infringement. All assignments will be submitted electronically. Online Presence & Blogs What is your online presence? What digital content have you created and posted to the web? In this class, we will work within a D2L shell online, which will focus on establishing a Personalized Learning Network (PLN) and building a positive online presence what people see when they Google you. It is important that your presence reflects you as you want to appear. We will work to create and maintain a blog that you can upload, store and write about whatever defines you as an individual. There also may be opportunities to use the ipads to help develop your blog! We will also look at other forms of social networking and collaboration sites, completing activities that teach about Twitter, Pinterest, and other ideas you wish to explore. Come with your creative minds and explore the power of your online presence! At the beginning of this class, students will also complete tasks on digital citizenship and plagiarism. All assignments will be submitted electronically. 3 8
4 DANCE Dance 7 In this course, students will be exposed to different types of dance styles. Each semester one or two different styles will be explored, including Jazz, Hip Hop, Line Dancing, Musical Theatre, Stomp, Ballet and Cultural dance. * This course is a performing arts class and, when appropriate, students will be expected to perform class routines at special events, such as pep rallies, fine arts concerts and community events. DRAMA Drama 7 - Acting Drama helps give students the basic tools and confidence for getting up in front of their peers. In this course, students will learn the skills of acting, speech, movement, technical theatre, and improvisation. Drama 7 Production - Full Year This year, our musical production Annie Jr. will require many hard working students committed to making our show a huge success. If you are interested in acting in and/or working on our production this year, this is the class for you. This is a full year option. Drama Production 7 - Behind the Scenes Even if acting on stage is not your thing, you can still go behind the scenes and learn how to design the sets, build the props, and create the advertising and promotion campaign for this years big school production of the musical Annie Jr. Students will also have a chance to learn about the audio and lighting used in a big drama production. NOTE: This option is NOT a full year option, and is different that the full year Drama Production choice. FILM STUDIES Film Studies / Exploration in Film 7 Have you ever watched a movie and wondered, "How'd they do that?" -- then this is the class for you! Learn some of the basics behind film production, including casting, set design, costumes, special effects, and more. A variety of films will be viewed throughout the year, with a different thematic focus each term. All films will be appropriate for this age group. FOODS AND FASHION STUDIES Baking Basics 7 Students develop an understanding of basic baking ingredients by combining them in a variety of ways to make cookies, cakes, muffins and biscuits. Students will be 4 8
5 familiarizing themselves with kitchen function and will work in groups throughout the course. Students also learn how to understand and follow recipes, as well as review the importance of safe and efficient work habits in the kitchen. Please Note: There is a $10 fee for this course, which covers the cost of all ingredients for the recipes, as well as the cost of maintaining the kitchen equipment. Also, our recipes are nut and peanut free, but students are responsible for informing the teacher about ALL food intolerances and allergies. Food Basics 7 Students will learn to make wise food choices using Canada s Food Guide, as well as how to read and understand recipes, use a variety of kitchen equipment, and learn about the importance of safe and efficient work habits in the kitchen. Students will be familiarizing themselves with kitchen function and will work in groups throughout the course. Please Note: There is a $10 fee for this course, which covers the cost of ingredients and supplies. Also, our recipes are nut and peanut free but students are responsible for informing the teacher about ALL food intolerances and allergies. Creative Stitching 7 Do you like to make things by hand? This is the class for you! Students will learn basic skills, as well as how to read and understand a pattern in any of the following areas: Plastic Canvas, Cross Stitching, Embroidery, Knitting (needle and/or loom), Crochet and/or Hand Sewing/Quilting. Students will work at their own pace to apply these skills in the assembly of simple projects. There is a $10 fee for this option, which covers the basic supplies and materials for samples & smaller projects, as well as the cost of maintaining all equipment. Fashion Studies / Sewing 7 Students learn the basic skills needed to hand sew, read and understand a pattern, and how to use a sewing machine. Students will work at their own pace to apply these skills in the assembly of simple projects. There is a $10 fee for this option, which covers the basic sewing supplies and materials for samples & smaller projects, as well as the cost of maintaining the sewing equipment. Any fabric needed for garments or larger projects will need to be purchased individually by the student at an additional cost. INDUSTRIAL ARTS Industrial Arts (IA) / Woodshop This is an introduction to the safe use of basic hand tools and a select number of power tools. Students will have an opportunity to work with different types of wood and construct projects using their skills. The cost for the option, which includes their projects, is $5.00 per semester. 5 8
6 LANGUAGES French (Full Year) In this year-long course, students will practice their French skills, possibly including introductions, numbers, colours, time, calendar, weather, school supplies, prepositions, verb conjugation, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, clothing, and animals. LEADERSHIP Leadership 7 This is the introduction to a group that all potential leaders should be involved in. If you have an interest in student leadership especially STUCO this class will help to develop the necessary leadership skills for grade 8 & 9 STUCO classes. Students will collaborate on mini projects, while at the same time developing leadership skills. This organization will continue its outstanding tradition as leaders at Clarence Sansom, promoting the school and its students through positive contributions to the school and the community. MUSIC Band 7 This is a fun full-year option where students will learn to play an instrument of their choice, and learn to read music. Students will get the opportunity to perform in concerts and attend band camp. No previous musical experience necessary. Instrument rental and maintenance fee: $100 for the year. Waiver forms are available and students can reduce this option fee by selling SUTP coupon books. Any questions, please contact Mrs. Thesen. OUTDOOR AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION Astronomy 7 This class is about discovering the universe and all its fascinating features! In this class we will learn the history of Astronomy, methods for observing the night sky, and explore the features of the Solar System like galaxies, stars, and other celestial objects. We will also look at past, present, and future space exploration missions. Climbing 7 This option will introduce students to sport climbing and bouldering. Proper climbing terminology, etiquette and safety will be studied along with instruction on how to climb and safely belay. Cost: $10.00 Outdoor Education 7 These courses are designed to allow students to gain knowledge and appreciation for NATURE, WILDERNESS, WILDLIFE, ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES, and OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES. 6 8
7 Outdoor Education Component: Concepts focus around preparing for our various field trips. Environmental Education Component: Focus on environmental awareness as well as conservation/preservation of wild and natural/protected areas, wildlife, and how we can become responsible citizens of our earth. E.g. Earth Day Projects. Due to the nature of this course and the extensive field trip component, there will be a fee of approximately $20-$30 per term to cover equipment and transportation costs. Term 1 The main focus of term 1 will be an introduction to ORIENTEERING, MAPPING SKILLS and URBAN PARKS. Students will learn the basics of compass navigation as they learn orienteering courses around the schoolyard. The main FIELD TRIP for this term will be FISH CREEK PARK. Term 2 The main focus of term 2 will be an introduction to WINTER SURVIVAL and RECREATION activities. A majority of class time will be spent learning the basics of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on school property. A basic understanding of appropriate clothing and layering for winter activities will also be covered. The main FIELD TRIP for this term will be CROSS COUNTRY SKIING at the CANMORE NORDIC CENTRE. Term 3 The main focus of term 3 will be an introduction to URBAN CYCLING. Students will learn the basics of proper bike maintenance and repairs. ALL STUDENTS WILL REQUIRE A WORKING BICYCLE to participate in term 3. Road safety and traffic laws will also be introduced. The main FIELD TRIP for this term will be a cycling trip to the INGLEWOOD BIRD SANTUARY. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Introduction to Golf 7 Fore! This course will introduce the basics of golf, such as: rules, equipment, posture, and etiquette. We will also learn a brief history of golf and learn about some of the current professional golfers in the PGA. Equipment is provided, but students are also permitted to bring their own clubs for practice. Low Organized Games: This physical activity option is based in the lunchroom. Students who enroll in the Low Organized Games course can expect to participate in a variety of activities and games that center around teamwork, sportsmanship and having fun. Activities will be chosen based on student interest, and the availability of space and facility. When the weather is nice, students can expect to be outdoors. On occasion, our gymnasium may become available, but inside activities will occur primarily in the lunchroom. Low Organized Games may include: floor hockey, European handball, soccer, ultimate Frisbee and many others. Students should prepare to be active, play hard, and have fun! 7 8
8 Soccer 7 If hockey is not your thing, then we are offering you SOCCER this fall.if you are a World Cup fan and would like to take part in Sansom Cup, this is a course you want to be in...100% pure fun! Hang out with your friends, develop your soccer skills, run around and just be wild! There s no need for desks or homework here just a great attitude! Weather not cooperating? Not to worry! We just turn it into indoor soccer in the lunchroom. Fit Club / Fitness & Games 7 Come sweat it out in this high energy and fun fitness option! Students will participate in a variety of activities that promote both individual and group fitness. Activities may include circuit-training, use of the Sansom Fitness Center and group games. Come prepared to increase your fitness level and have some fun! 8 8
