1 Media, Entertainment, and Sports Club Charter Renewal April 25, 2010
2 I. Executive Summary The Media, Entertainment, & Sports (ME&S) Club was founded in 2009, and is supporting the student body as a professional club for students seeking a career within the industry. ME&S provides a space for students, alumni, and companies to further relationships through five main functions: Career Relations, On-Campus Events, the MBA Media and Entertainment Conference, Off-Campus Events, and Alumni Relations. In addition to routine activities, this spring ME&S has been a driver for: Hire Up! (an initiative started by the Dean s Office), the national Annual MBA Media & Entertainment Conference, Week-In- Cities (LA), and supporting the administration in the development of the Media Vertical. ME&S will continue to provide career-related support to the student body in through events on- and off-campus, including educational and networking sessions. II. Mission The mission of The Media, Entertainment, and Sports Club (ME&S) is to bring prominence and association to Fuqua within the multifaceted media, entertainment, and sports industry. MES objective is to provide support to Fuqua students interested in pursuing careers in the related industries by coordinating opportunities for interaction between students and companies thru on and off campus events, alumni relations, peer networking and involvement with the Triangle community. III. Strategic Introduce Fuqua to the MES Industries The ME&S club is working with recruiters and alumni to increase campus events and employment opportunities at Fuqua within the specified industries. We plan to achieve this objective by coordinating nation-wide, off-campus recruiting and relationship-building events. The Club s efforts will be closely aligned with the vertical strategy of the school and leverage corporate relationships to educate the industry on the Duke MBA. Introduce MES to Fuqua ME&S is seeking to increase the footprint of Media, Entertainment, and Sports within the school. The Club is working with the administration to increase ME&S offerings within the Fuqua curriculum and launch key events on-campus where alumni and industry experts can interact and engage with current students. In addition, ME&S will design programming that is engaging and informative both to the members of the MES club and other students who may be interested in learning more about careers in Media, Entertainment, and Sports. Strengthen Alumni Connections Each graduating class of Fuqua has sent several professionals into the ME&S industries. The Club seeks to strengthen the ME&S network by connecting these professionals with each other and the current student body through career mentoring, on site visits, quarterly newsletters, and city based happy hours. By building these alumni relationships, ME&S will increase awareness about Duke MBA s interested in the industry and reinforce an ME&S network for our alums.
3 III. Governance Standards ME&S In MBAA Governance Standard Compliance Club cabinet meets at least twice each term o ME&S current cabinet has met twice this term to delineate roles and outline calendar Meet as a club least once each term. All Presidents must attend the Club Presidents Retreat held in Term 4. o In attendance for this year s Club Presidents Retreat At least one President must attend each term s Club Presidents Meeting; absences must be approved in advance by the Executive Director. The club has managed their MBAA funding allocation and corporate sponsorship funding appropriately, and they have tracked spending and submitted reimbursements according to MBAA policy. IV. Value to the student body IT/Media Vertical Strategy ME&S is serving as the student representative for the school s vertical strategy within Media and Entertainment. The Co-Presidents and Career Lead have met numerous times in the fourth term with the with Sheryle Dirks (CMC), and Meena Dorr (Corporate Relations) to ensure the club is integrating their efforts with the vertical strategy and representing the student voice. Additionally, ME&S serves as the liaison for the Hire Up initiative to identify new best practices for ongoing employment programs.
4 Career Opportunities ME&S plays a critical role in both informing and educating students on career opportunities within the different industries, while at the same time, serving as a liaison to the CMC and Corporate Relations ( as we are a Hire-Up vertical) to voice the career support and needs of the ME&S constituents. Structuring career programming and facilitating relationships between current students and alumni will ultimately help further strengthen alumni ties to Fuqua, as well as, increase the number of Fuqua graduates in ME&S roles. ME&S Network ME&S will provide a formalized opportunity for interaction between students, companies, and alumni. ME&S will leverage the Duke brand to establish industry relationships and communicate the value proposition of hiring a Fuqua student. MES provides networking opportunities with current students at Fuqua and other schools, as well as with alumni and industry professionals. By facilitating these opportunities, ME&S plans to increase awareness of the Duke MBA value proposition to the industry while providing a network for students and alumni to leverage in pursuit of ME&S careers. Fuqua currently works on a team of five top business schools with Columbia, MIT, Wharton and NYU to organize a nationwide annual conference in New York. In addition to providing FY students with the opportunity to network with industry professionals through organizing panels and establishing sponsorship, MES is the group responsible for maintaining the school s presence. V. Career Provide opportunities and forums for First Year (FY) and Second Year (SY) students to increase their knowledge and awareness of career opportunities in the Media, Entertainment and Sports (MES) spaces. Provide a liaison for the CMC and Corporate Relations departments to increase the number of career opportunities for Fuqua students in the ME&S industry.
