Dear MOWC Friends and Supporters, Since 1987, Meals on Wheels Chicago has proudly led the charge against senior hunger in the city of Chicago and championed for the increased independence of our disabilities community. Through collaborative partnerships with our city leaders, financial commitments of corporate, community and family foundations, and the overwhelming support of thousands of individuals donors and volunteers who believe in our mission, Meals on Wheels Chicago has expanded our outreach and fundraising efforts in During this time of unprecedented struggle and need, thousands of our city s most vulnerable homebound seniors and individuals with disabilities have faced an uphill battle in their fight for independence, food security, and meeting their basic human needs. Meals on Wheels Chicago is committed to raising critically needed funds that support programs which ease their burden and restore hope during these challenging times. The impressive achievements outlined in this report are the direct result of the hard work of our program partners and your investment and financial generosity throughout the year. We sincerely believe that without the support of diverse community partners, volunteers, and funders, Meals on Wheels Chicago could not reach our goals and provide critical program support to the city s most vulnerable populations. Looking ahead to 2012, the city of Chicago will continue to experience an influx of homebound seniors and individuals with disabilities who are in need of our assistance. We will strive to strengthen these programs, increase funding and reach, and ultimately advocate on behalf of the senior and disability communities we serve. It is our sincerest hope that the partnerships we ve created and maintained throughout 2011 will continue to thrive, so that together, we are able to create and sustain positive changes in our community. In 2011, Meals on Wheels Chicago made significant strides in our fundraising efforts, restoring traditional fundraising models through our grants program and breathing new life into annual events. We are fortunate to have had the unfaltering support of donors and sponsors who wished to see these programs succeed. And we are humbled by the magnitude of generosity, which helped us to produce such positive returns. Your investment in these programs helps ensure that the safety net for our city s most vulnerable populations stays intact. On behalf of Meals on Wheels Chicago, we are proud to present the Meals on Wheels Chicago 2011 Annual Report. Amy Dordek Dolinsky Board President Kimberly Porritt Executive Director Meals on Wheels Chicago 2011 Year End Report

Our Vision Meals on Wheels Chicago is committed to the belief that all individuals have the right to live independently with dignity in their own homes. As an organization, we raise private funds to ensure that every homebound senior in the city of Chicago has meal delivery on six major holidays and we supplement daily and weekend meal deliveries. We are also committed to raising private funds for individuals with disabilities who require modifications of their home environment. Since 1987, our mission to ensure homebound senior citizens and individuals with disabilities maintain dignified and independent lifestyles by providing them with warm nutritious meals and related services, has aided thousands of our city s most vulnerable citizens. Our Challenge Amidst record levels of poverty and need in the Chicagoland community, Meals on Wheels Chicago faces an extraordinary challenge; providing for critical human services, while meeting the city's demand, amidst a growing senior population. The present condition of our economy, combined with an escalating senior and disabilities population, has resulted in a greater need for our private fundraising efforts to succeed. In addition to the private funding that our organization provides, our city partners rely on city government, state and federal funding to ensure these programs succeed. However, recent budget cuts and the threat of unstable government funding have led to a reliance on private monies to aid our city partners in their efforts. We recognize that a growing demand for program services, combined with an uncertain financial climate, increases the need for Meals on Wheels Chicago to expand current private funding partnerships. The generosity of our donor community in 2011 has been overwhelming and because these relationships are vital to our ability to support our programs, Meals on Wheels Chicago is grateful to all who help us sustain our mission and optimistic that you will remain committed to meeting our future needs. 2

Our Programs The Home Delivered Meals program provides nutritious meals to eligible homebound seniors who do not have a support system in place and cannot obtain meals. The program provides two meals per day, five days a week, to nearly 11,000 homebound seniors in need. This reliable food source maintains the nutritional health of older adults and improves the quality of life experienced by those in their later years. Meet Vainey The HomeMod program allows qualified individuals with disabilities to receive home modifications to make their living environment more accessible. The program focuses on providing solutions for individuals with disabilities, such as the installation of grab bars, lowering cabinets or countertops, and widening doorways. These structural improvements allow individuals to achieve a higher level of independence. Vainey is a 14-year old with a diagnosis of profound static encephalopathy and epilepsy. She was born with these disabilities, is non-verbal and completely dependent in all activities. Vainey s father reported that the 14 year old weighs 80 lbs, and that the physical transferring of his daughter is becoming increasingly difficult. Parents in this type of situation often face a serious moral dilemma of whether or not they can continue to care for their loved one or must have them placed in an institution. The family has written and informed us that HomeMod and the modifications we made to their home have allowed Vainey to remain at home as a family. Vainey is doing very well, attends school, and is working hard on her speech therapy. After Before Meals on Wheels Chicago 2011 Year End Report 3

Our Accomplishments Meals on Wheels Chicago successfully fills the gaps in limited government funding received by our city program partners. We are the sole source of support for holiday meal program service and provide supplemental funding toward the daily and weekend meal program for our city s homebound elderly. Sabina's Story Sabina is a 94-year old client in the Meals on Wheels program, receiving hot meals on a daily basis. Sabina cannot stand for any length of time and is unable to prepare her own meals. She s been enrolled in the Meals on Wheels program for almost 20 years and relies on the program in the absence of any family who could assist her. Despite her physical challenges and advanced age, Sabina is quick- witted and very alert. She attributes this to her lifelong companion, her radio, and the kindness of her driver, who has been delivering to her for 15 years. In 2011, we provided $356,000 toward the Home Delivered Meals program. $240,000 covered the cost of the 6 major holidays. $116,000 supplemented daily and weekend meals. The program meets demand at 100% and does not currently have any wait time for enrollment into the Home Delivered Meals program. We provided $52,500 toward the HomeMod program. Grew corporate and grants revenue by 55% from 2010, developing new partnerships and growing existing donor commitments. Brought together hundreds of employees from over 10 separate companies to participate in our Friends Beyond Years program. This volunteer program matches volunteers with senior living communities for a day of direct service and intergenerational companionship. Hosted three successful annual events that raised $458,000 cumulatively, providing 140,000 meals. 4

Our Partners Meals on Wheels Chicago was established to raise private funds through special events, corporate partnerships and individual contributions, to help financially support two existing city programs: Home Delivered Meals and Home Modification. The Chicago Department of Family and Support Services Senior Services Area Agency on Aging manages the Home Delivered Meals program. The Mayor s Office for People with Disabilities oversees Home Modification. Meals on Wheels Chicago is strictly a fundraising entity designed to fill the widening funding gap. We do not provide the program services, but rather, rely on our city partners to run program operations. By supporting existing programs, we are able to expand the scope of those programs. Open Kitchens The Chicago Department of Family and Support Services-Senior Services Area Agency on Aging utilizes Chicago-based company Open Kitchens for the preparation and delivery of the home delivered meals. For over 25 years, Open Kitchens has been bringing daily meals and a friendly face into the homes of our city s isolated and homebound elderly. Offering a meal program of nutritionally-balanced entrées and side dishes, Open Kitchens drivers provide two meals a day, five days a week, to 11,000 seniors. Many Meals on Wheels programs throughout the country rely on volunteer delivery coordination and because Chicago serves such a large client base, Open Kitchens offers consistent and reliable service to the seniors instead. One unique feature of the program is that with this consistent and reliable service comes the added benefit of daily contact between driver and client. If any of the drivers notice a change in the client s home, mental state, or physical well-being, they will report this to a case manager or authorities right away. This is one of the most preventative and cost-effective social services we can provide homebound seniors. san serif is Univers light 45 serif is adobe garamond pro Driver Profile Name: Calvin Harris Years with OK: 27 years Neighborhoods on your route: Early on, I was in a lot impoverished area on the city s west and near south side. Now, I cover anywhere from Downtown to Harlem and all different communities: Polish, Hispanic, and African-American. Meals delivered daily: What do you like best about delivering meals? The best part about the job is the interaction with the clients and filling a real need. You find people who are sick and really need our help. These people have no family and they need Open Kitchens to deliver these meals. Helping people in this way is rewarding. 2. What is the hardest part of your job? You get to know your clientele and when they get sick or their situation gets worse or if they pass, that is really hard. Then there are people who are really frail and are living in terrible conditions, but who are too proud to accept help. That is really hard to see day after day. 3. Describe a typical day delivering meals? I arrive at Open Kitchen early in the morning and begin by heating my truck. It s important that we get the heat and freezer temperatures just right. We have to maintain exact temperatures to carry the food. My route starts at 8 am and I make deliveries until about 2:00 pm. Meals on Wheels Chicago 2011 Year End Report 5
