1 Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet Extra Notes Introduction These notes supplement the detailed set of instructions that explain how to set up and use the Lenovo ThinkPad tablet. This material has been prepared by the Waikato Management School (WMS) IT Team at the University of Waikato. These hints and tips have been designed for participants enrolled in the School s Centre for Corporate & Executive Education 2012 programmes. 2 Adding your student account to the tablet If you have trouble adding your student account to the tablet in the format: try This seems to be the magic fix for some - why? I have no idea If you still have problems, please contact the WMS Helpdesk. The step-by-step instructions for adding another account to the tablet can be found on page 14 of the original notes. Adding web shortcuts to the home screen If you have a website that you visit often and want a quick way to access that site on the tablet, complete the following steps. 1. Go to the website. 2. Press the star (Bookmark) icon near the top righthand corner of the screen. A Bookmark this page dialog box appears. 3. Edit the label if appropriate, the select OK 4. Go to the bookmarks by selecting the small (Bookmarks) icon near the top right of the screen. All your bookmarks should be visible. 5. Long-press on the bookmark and choose Add shortcut to home 6. Go back to the home screen. 7. You should see an icon representing the website. You can move this shortcut to an appropriate place on your home screen. Page 2 Lenovo ThinkPad Tablets - Extra Notes

3 Adding folder shortcuts to the home screen As mentioned in the original notes, a good file manager (such as ES File Explorer or Astro) application is very useful. We suggest that you create a Documents folder (call it My stuff or MBA or something that makes sense to you) on your tablet, and create subfolders within that Documents folder to organise your files. You can set that Documents folder as your home directory within the file manager application. You can also create a shortcut to any particular folder to the tablet home screen. To do this (using the ES File Explorer app as an example), complete the following steps: 1. In ES File Explorer, navigate to the folder that you want to add to the home screen. 2. Long Press on the folder. A list of options appears. 3. Choose Shortcut 4. Go back to the home screen. 5. You should see an icon representing the folder. You can move this icon to an appropriate place. Left-handed? In the Notes app you can enable or disable palm rejection i.e. when the stylus is active the app will only recognise the pen input and not part of your hand that may touch the screen. There is an extra setting for the lefties in the population. Open the Notes Mobile app, go to the Menu, select Settings, then choose your options. Lenovo ThinkPad Tablets - Extra Notes Page 3

4 In the Quill app, a similar setting can be found from the Menu (top right of the screen), Settings, under the headings User-handedness and Input preferences. Caps lock on the on-screen keyboard Sometimes when using the on-screen keyboard, you want to type several upper-case letters in a row. Touching the shift key once capitalises one character. Double-tapping the shift key sets the caps lock the shift key turns blue and all subsequent letters are capitalised. Touch the shift key again to turn off this caps lock mode. Copying and pasting text On your tablet, you can easily copy and paste text from one location to another. To select text in a web page, , document etc., simply long-press on a particular word. Two tags appear on each side of the word. Drag the tags to make your selection. You should see an "action bar" near the top of the screen, or, if in an app, options may appear just above your selection. Choose Copy. Move to the app, message, or whatever you want to paste the text. Long-press and choose Paste The text appears. Sharing info between applications Sometimes, sharing can be quicker than copying and pasting text, web addresses etc. For example, to send yourself the URL of a useful web page via , complete the following steps: In the browser, long-press on the URL Select Share Choose Gmail Enter an address and any other details and select Send You can use sharing to copy text from a web page into an message, or into your Google tasks (GTasks) list. Annotating PDF files Which is the best app for reading/annotating PDF files? It depends on the features you value and how you prefer to annotate your files. 5 I like both ezpdf Reader Pro ($3.93) and RepliGo Reader ($6.99). However, Adobe recently (10 April 2012) released a major update to their PDF reader. With this upgrade, you can now mark-up PDF content with sticky notes, a freehand drawing tool or the highlight, strikethrough, and underline tools. Hyperlinks within the documents and to external websites work. The Adobe Reader is free, the annotation tools are straightforward, and so is the best choice unless you want some of the advanced features of other readers..ezpdf Reader Pro has lots of settings to choose from, advanced search functions and a text-to-speech feature. Verdict: Excellent value for money. The menus/features in the RepliGo Reader are structured in a logical way and this reader was the best of all PDF readers tested at coping with very large files. There is no text-to-speech feature and the search function does not have any advanced options. I tend to RepliGo Reader as my default PDF reader. Verdict: Highly recommended. If I am simply reading and annotating PDF files by highlighting text (rather than drawing or writing notes) then I tend to use Mantano Reader (free version with ads, otherwise $9.56). You can turn pages while in the highlight text mode a definite bonus! A nice touch is the ability to swipe up/down on the left border to increase/decrease the screen brightness. If you are the sort of annotator who underlines and writes freehand notes and scribbles all over your document, then you are better off using the RepliGo Reader. That sort of drawing in the Mantano reader is a little clumsy because you have to save and go out of drawing mode to turn a page. In the RepliGo Reader you still need to go in and out of drawing mode between page turns, but the strange saving step is omitted and your drawings remain visible, without having to go to the Notes section. To annotate by drawing in RepliGo, tap on the page, choose Pencil, choose Draw freehand, do your annotations, Press Done, and then turn the page. Lenovo ThinkPad Tablets - Extra Notes Page 5

6 You can find more detailed information about a range of PDF reading/annotating apps in the original notes that were provided with your tablet. The find a nicer keyboard tip At one of our orientation sessions, someone asked about different on-screen keyboard options, i.e. using something other than the default tablet keyboard. To change the keyboard, go to Settings, Language & input, and under Keyboard settings, choose Current input method. Try the English (US) Keyboard (Android keyboard). Also, you can download different keyboards from the Android market. Try Thumb Keyboard, Smart Keyboard or Swiftkey Tablet X. Working with MS Office documents Doc to Go is the app you can use to view and edit Microsoft office documents. To edit a Word document (within the app) select the Menu, choose Edit, then select Toggle Keyboard. In a PowerPoint file, select the Menu, choose Edit, then select Edit Slide Text or one of the other options. Can t connect to the Android market? If you get a No connection message (or similar) when you try to access the Android Market (and other internet access is OK) check the date and time on the tablet. I find that if I have let the battery run down completely, the date goes back to Jan and I can t access the Android Market soon to be re-named Google Play.. To set the correct date and time, go to Settings, Date & time and choose from the options available. Working with MP3s If you quick-press on a link to an MP3 file a Complete action using dialog box appears. Select an app to play the MP3. If you long-press on the MP3 link, you get a different set of options. Page 6 Lenovo ThinkPad Tablets - Extra Notes

7 Open will present you with a choice of apps that can be used to open the MP3 file just like the quick-press action above. The Save link option will start the process of downloading the file. When the file has finished downloading, you will find the file in your Downloads folder. Select the file and the Complete action using dialog box appears. Downloading zipped files You can download and open zipped files using the tablet, as long as your file management app can cope with zipped files ES File Manager can. To download and open zipped files, complete the following steps. 1. In your web browser, navigate to the zipped file/folder. In most of your papers, it will be under the Files link. 2. Select the Download icon. 3. The zipped file downloads you will see an arrow appear near the bottom of the screen. 4. Open the ES File Explorer app. 5. Select the Favorites button, then the Downloads icon. 6. Select the zipped file. A folder appears. Select the folder you should see the individual files. 7. Select a file. 8. Choose an app to view the file. Android Market will become Google Play Android devices have their own shop where you can download free and paid applications. To find new apps, select the Market icon on your device. At the moment, the icon looks like a shopping bag with a green robot on it. The Android Market has been re-branded as Google Play a digital content service with an online store for music, movies, books, and Android apps and games, as well as a cloud media player. Not all services are available in New Zealand. At time of writing, the Lenovo tablet had not changed over to the new icon, but it should not be far away. Lenovo ThinkPad Tablets - Extra Notes Page 7
