2 Celebrate Chicago s place in American history! The theater renovation and film presentation are generously supported by a major grant from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation. Additional support was provided by the State of Illinois Department of Natural Resources Public Museum Capital Grant Program, The Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Foundation, and Shure. Join us on Saturday, July 4 for the grand opening of the Robert R. McCormick Theater and the Guild Gallery. Doors open at 12:00 noon following our Fourth of July festivities on Uihlein Plaza.

3 Visit the Robert R. McCormick Theater, newly equipped with state-of-the-art 4K digital projection, surround-sound speakers, and comfortable, fully-accessible seating. The theater features a dynamic new film presentation that transports visitors through major events in Chicago s history. Feel the intensity of the Great Chicago Fire and splendor of the World s Columbian Exposition. Explore the sights of bustling Maxwell Street (depicted at left) in the 1950s and peer down from an I-beam of the Sears Tower in the 1970s. Relive Chicago sports victories and cheer on President Obama during his Grant Park victory speech. The film lasts approximately 20 minutes; admittance is free with Museum admission. Introducing the Guild Gallery and its new sensational interactive! In the new Guild Gallery, discover the meaning of city s flag and help select a fifth star inspired by highlights of Chicago s past through a vibrant, 12-foot long, touch-screen interactive experience. Plus, walk the city on a wall-to-wall floor map of Chicagoland featuring historical sites, notable people, and significant events in our city s history. 4 NEW! Stars and Sips Inspired by our newest interactive experience, these tours explore the events commemorated by the stars on Chicago s flag. Each concludes at a pub for a bit of local drinking lore. Participants must be at least 21 years of age with a valid ID. Unless otherwise noted, food and beverages are not included in the ticket price. Fort Dearborn Thursday, June 25 6:30 P.M. $25, $20 members The Battle of Fort Dearborn in 1812 is a founding act of violence in Chicago history. Follow the path of the soldiers and settlers who evacuated the fort to the site of the conflict with guide Paul Durica. Stops include the Old Republic Building, Lurie Garden, and a bar in the South Loop for a Q&A with the guide. Meet at the London Guarantee Building, 360 North Michigan Avenue. Tour lasts approximately 2 hours and includes considerable walking. Great Chicago Fire Saturday, June 27 1:00 P.M. $40, $30 members Follow the Great Chicago Fire s path of destruction from the site of the O Leary barn to the Near North Side. Travel by trolley to Old Town to see remnants of the fire, such as wooden streets and relief cottages. The tour concludes at an Irish pub where you can raise a glass to toast Mrs. O Leary s (and Daisy s) innocence. Meet at the Chicago History Museum. Tour lasts about 3 hours World s Fair Sunday, July 12 2:30 P.M. $55, $45 members Explore the World s Columbian Exposition s connections to the North Shore on a tour of Evanston with historian Peter T. Alter. Featured stops are Daniel Burnham s house and a behind-the-scenes tour of Sketchbook Brewing Company. Ticket price includes beer tastings, Sketchbook s daily offerings plus an 1893-inspired brew. Meet at the Chicago History Museum. Tour lasts approximately 3.5 to 4 hours World s Fair Saturday, August 29 9:30 A.M. $15, $10 members The A Century of Progress International Exposition celebrated 100 years of Chicago s achievements and brought a sense of optimism to the city in the midst of the Great Depression. Jog around scenic Northerly Island, site of the fairgrounds, and finish with a History Happy Hour at a local tavern. Led at a casual pace, the tour covers approximately 4 miles with stops along the way. Meet at the northeast corner of Roosevelt Road and Michigan Avenue. Tour tickets must be purchased in advance. Devil in the White City July 25 Based on Erik Larson s best-selling book, this tour takes you back to 1893 to follow the trails of Daniel Burnham and the devilish doings of H. H. Holmes. Visit the historic fairgrounds, the Garden of the Phoenix, and the site of the infamous murder castle. Sinister Secrets August 22 Join writer and crime historian Richard Lindberg as he reveals Chicago s most sinister crime secrets. Begin with a look at Nathan Leopold s glasses in the Museum s newest exhibition, The Secret Lives of Objects. Stops include the former home of Robert Crowe, the Cook County state s attorney and chief prosecutor in the Leopold and Loeb trial. NEW! Brown Line June 7, July 19, August 23 Explore the historic buildings and back porches of the North Side on the city s most picturesque L line. Take in the architecture of the business district at Armitage and the German heritage of Lincoln Square, where the tour concludes. Blue Line May 31, June 21, July 26, August 23 Discover the history of the most ambitious of the four original elevated lines. The tour includes an exploration of the thriving culture in Pilsen its vibrant murals, sunken streets, and lively community and concludes in Wicker Park. Green Line West June 14, July 19 In 1893, this branch of the Green Line opened to connect the West Side neighborhoods to the downtown business district along Lake Street. Take in stunning views of the Chicago River and the Merchandise Mart. Visit the Garfield Park Conservatory. Tour concludes in Oak Park. Green Line South July 12, August 9 Ride Chicago s oldest L line, which except for renovations ( ) has run 24/7 since opening in Trace the city s southward development and discover stories from the 1893 world s fair. Stops include the Bronzeville neighborhood and IIT campus. Tour concludes in the Loop. The Loop L August 9 Greg Borzo, author of The Chicago L, leads this tour of Chicago s central business district. Bid farewell to Chicago Styled: Fashioning The Magnificent Mile with costume curator Petra Slinkard. Begin the tour in the exhibition gallery, then hop on the trolley for a ride along the city s most fashionable boulevard to explore the retail history of this landmark shopping district. Meet at the Chicago History Museum. Sheffield Stroll Saturdays, May 30, June 27, July 25, August 15, 2:00 P.M. Explore the history of the Sheffield/ DePaul neighborhood. Stroll past Victorian architecture and sites of Hollywood films. Wrap up at one of the city s finest corner pubs, where you can purchase refreshments after the tour! SPOTLIGHT WALKING TOURS Explore historic venues and moments in Chicago history with in-depth narration by expert guides. $25, $20 members Union Station Friday, June 5 at 2:00 P.M., and Sundays, June 28, August 9 and 30 at 1:00 P.M. Tour runs approximately 90 minutes. Inspired by Railroaders: Jack Delano s Homefront Photography, this tour takes a closer look at one of America s last great railway terminals. Explore the city s rich transportation heritage while strolling through the historic station and examining its monumental exterior. Meet at Union Station, 500 West Jackson Boulevard. Tours meet at the cemetery entrances and last approximately 2 hours. $25, $20 members Bohemian National Cemetery June 28 and July 12 It is the 100th anniversary of the Eastland Disaster and the majority of the victims are buried here. Discover their stories with historian Al Walavich. Other stops include the cemetery s historic gatehouse, magnificent mausoleums, and emblematic treestone grave markers. Graceland Cemetery August 23 Hear stories of the Chicago elite who are buried at this famous cemetery, including Marshall Field, Louis Sullivan, Potter and Bertha Palmer, and George Pullman. Running tours are led at a casual pace and cover approximately 3 miles in 75 minutes. Ride past bustling restaurants and trendy boutiques while learning about the evolution of this artists haven that was previously home to beer barons and a thriving Polish community. 10 EVENTs Round up the gang and join us for some summer fun! Shining Lives: The Story behind the Musical Saturday, June 6, 10:00 A.M. 12:00 NOON $8, FREE for members, reservations required. Coffee and pastries included. Discover the true and tragic story of the young women of Chicago s Radium Dial Company with Shining Lives writer-director Jessica Thebus and historian Peter T. Alter. Set in 1922, the musical features courageous, determined women who are living the American dream earning good wages and relishing their new-found independence. But after years of hand painting watch dials, the harmless radium leads to heartbreaking results. FREE ADMISSION Movies in the Park Join us for another season of Movies in the Park! The films are free and begin at dusk on select Wednesdays on the Museum s Uihlein Plaza in Lincoln Park. Bring your own snacks, chairs, and blankets. Our outdoor family-friendly festivities include patriotic music, a reading of the Declaration of Independence, a keynote oration by civic leader Ronald J. Gidwitz, and a children s costume parade led by the World s Tallest Uncle Sam. Closes Sunday, August 16 Costume and Textile Gallery Chicago Styled: Fashioning The Magnificent Mile Trace the development of Chicago s North Michigan Avenue into one of the country s most renowned destinations for upscale retail. Set against a shifting cityscape, ensembles from the Museum s collection tell the story of the growth of this landmark district, showcasing the fashion from recent decades and the stylish people who wore it. Benjamin Green-Field Gallery Railroaders: Jack Delano s Homefront Photography Explore the stories of Chicago railroaders during World War II as captured by photographer Jack Delano. The exhibition features more than sixty images of men and women who hustled on the rails, in the stations, and around the yards. Step into a caboose, play at a model rail yard, and discover Delano s legacy through the work of his son, Pablo. Railroaders is presented in partnership with the Center for Railroad Photography & Art with generous support from The Candelaria Fund, CN, Bon and Holly French, David and Cynthia Kahler, North American Railway Foundation, Union Pacific Foundation, and Wintrust Financial. Tawani Foundation Diorama Hall Imagining Chicago: The Dioramas Visit our beloved dioramas to see how Chicago grew from a desolate frontier outpost in 1804 to the bustling city that hosted the World s Columbian Exposition of The Pritzker Wing Facing Freedom Examine the stories behind eight conflicts over American freedom dating from the 1850s to the 1970s. Through artifacts, audio clips, videos, and activities, each conflict is presented from the participants perspectives. KPMG and Paul and Katherine Snyder Community Gallery Vivian Maier s Chicago For decades, Vivian Maier worked as a nanny for North Shore families. Loved by her charges, she kept a secret she was a talented photographer. Only after her death did her extensive work become well known. In this exhibition, discover the diverse images taken by this tireless photographer, who captured the local character of Chicago s streets in unique ways. The Alcoves Abraham Lincoln As president, Abraham Lincoln faced our nation s greatest crisis the Civil War. This installation highlights Lincoln s election in 1860, his leadership during the Civil War, and his tragic assassination. Supported by a gift from The Gupta Family with additional support from the Joyce Foundation in honor of Lawrence N. Hansen. Please note: Abraham Lincoln s deathbed is currently at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois, where it is featured in Undying Words: Abraham Lincoln , co-curated by Olivia Mahoney. The bed will return in spring of Sanger P. Robinson Gallery Lincoln s Chicago Lincoln was a frequent visitor to Chicago, his second home and political headquarters during his rise to prominence. Come glimpse the city Lincoln knew: a dynamic young metropolis on the verge of greatness. The Robert R. McCormick Foundation is the lead exhibition sponsor of Lincoln s Chicago.
