3 Accreditation means : What is Accreditation? Educational programs, services, staff, and facilities meet or exceed essential standards of educational quality. This quality is validated by both a self-study and an onsite team of evaluators. Reviewed by a commission of educators. Recognized by other educational institutions.
4 What is ACBSP? ACBSP is one of organizations which offer accreditation for Business Schools and Programs Accreditor ACICS ACBSP AACSB - All are currently and/or formerly recognized by CHEA & USDE (as of Aug 2011) - All are accreditors on business education CHEA: The Council for Higher Education Accreditation USDE: The U.S. Department of Education AACSB: The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business ACBSP: Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs ACICS: Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools 4
5 Founded in 1988 The only organization offering accreditation to all levels of collegiate business programs from associate to baccalaureate to doctoral degree programs. 7 Importance of ACBSP accreditation Why is the accreditation process important? It provides the public with a means to recognize institutions of value, those which have met established standards of good practice. Such recognition is essential to prospective students, current students, and alumi. 7
8 Why is the accreditation process important? Accreditation benefits for the FEC 1. A process for continuous departmental improvement. 2. The impetus for identifying strengths and weaknesses. 3. Keeping business programs current through curriculum development. 4. A forum for review and analysis of the business unit. 5. An outcomes assessment process linking goals, activities, and outcomes. 6. Leading to higher standards in hiring and assisting in recruitment of faculty. 7. Having advantage in governmental decisions on public funding of research or educational infrastructure. 8
9 Why is the accreditation process important? Accreditation benefits for faculty members and staff 1. A sense of pride and faculty's self-esteem when teaching in an accredited business program. 2. Opportunities to keep current in quality procedures. 3. Professional development and leadership opportunities for faculty and administrators in development of outcome assessments and conducting site visits to other institutions. 9
10 Why is the accreditation process important? Accreditation benefits for students 1. Relevancy and currency of faculty, programs, and courses Assuring a focus on quality performance. 2. An ongoing effort to provide excellent equipment, software, and learning resources for students and commitment to effective student services. 3. Referring to accreditation status on resumes assists in job applications and interviews, or application for graduate schools. 4. Credit transfer from a student's previous school to most colleges and universities. 5. For prospective students, using the accreditation status of a program/institution as a factor in their decision whether to enroll. 10
11 Why is the accreditation process important? Accreditation benefits for the community 1. For employers, by restricting hiring to graduates of accredited programs, employers, esp. corporations are able to recruit, on average, higher-quality employees than by allowing applicants from all programs to be interviewed and tested on the job. 2. For government agencies, using accreditation as a selection criterion of employment candidates. 11
12 How does a degree program get accredited? Initial accreditation is validated by: A self-study and an onsite team of evaluators. Evaluators' report reviewed by a commission of educators. Every 2 years after that, a quality assurance report (like a selfstudy) is to be submited. Every 10 years after that, a reaffirmation report is to be submitted and accreditation is validated for another 10 years.

14 Standard 1: Leadership Criteria Leader Administrator & faculty to deploy & review performance Business unit to evaluate performance Social responsibility Administrator & faculty to create ethic environment Business unit to evaluate the impact of program offering on society Business unit to ensure & monitor both the ethical business & academic practices 14
15 Standard 2: Strategic planning Criteria Formal process for strategic directions addressed Staff should have significant input Strategic objectives & timetable identified Strategy deployment Short - & long-term objectives of action plan set Performance measurements for tracking progress Strategy communication 15
16 Standard 3: Student and stakeholder focus Criteria Determining the student segment Mechanism for identifying major stakeholders and methods of listening to and learning from them Periodically reviewing listening and learning methods Process to use the information obtained from students and stakeholders for purposes of planning educational programs Process to seek information, pursue common purposes, and receive complaints from students and stakeholders. Processes to attract and retain students A system to determine student and key stakeholder satisfaction and dissatisfaction Graphs or tables of assessment results pertinent to this standard 16

25 How can you help? Faculty involvement in improving instructional quality will show accreditors that faculty actually care about the quality of students experiences. Do not see accreditation activities as a distraction from your teaching and research activities. Continue to assess program learning outcomes related to your course. Read the "ACBSP Accreditation" on the FEC website. Read the self-study draft and provide your your comments. When an accreditation team comes to campus, each faculty member should feel as though he or she is the host. 25
