3 2013 Arkansas State Parks SCORP Survey UALR/IOG Survey Research Center June 2013 Introduction The UALR Institute of Government Survey Research Center (SRC) conducted a telephone survey at the request of the Arkansas State Parks that provided funding for the study. The purpose of the study was to gather Arkansas residents attitudes and experiences related to recreational activities, outdoor recreational areas, parks facilities and services, about Arkansas local and state parks. Methodology The survey was conducted between March 26 and April 30, A total of 542 interviews were conducted with Arkansas residents 18 years of age or older for a response rate of 45% (RR3). The study used a dual-frame sample of phone numbers drawn from both an RDD landline databank and a cell phone databank. The sample was drawn from the population of Arkansas residents 18 years of age and older. Seventy percent (70%) of participants were contacted via landline numbers and 30% of participants were contacted using cell phone numbers. Participants in the survey were entered into a drawing for a weekend stay for two at any Arkansas state park. To strengthen the validity of the survey the data was weighted to reflect the representative proportions of adult Arkansas residents, based upon age and gender, using US Census Bureau Population Division Annual Estimates Release Date, May Respondents were asked a series of questions at the beginning of the survey to establish whether or not they are active participants in outdoor activities. Respondents were classified as either Active or Non-Active based upon their responses to the screening questions. Ninety-six (96) respondents were classified as Non-Active and 446 respondents were classified as Active. The Non-Active group was then asked the reasons for their inactivity. After this question the interview stopped for this group. The Active respondents were then asked approximately 58 further questions to gather data regarding their attitudes and opinions concerning their recreational interests and attitudes. To determine the popularity ranking of the main outdoor activities, respondents were asked to indicate the frequency with which they participated in each activity. Each level of frequency was assigned a set number of quality points. For each activity the quality points were totaled and then averaged to obtain an Overall Quality Rating. The sorting of these ratings provides a popularity ranking of the 20 activities. To calculate an index of preference intensity of one activity relative to the others, a differential ranking score was calculated based upon the highest rating of 324 for Walking, jogging or hiking. Each sheet in this report contains the exact wording of the question presented to the respondents, a table and chart of the percentage results, and highlights for each question. Additionally, major findings from the study as a whole are presented below. UALR/IOG Survey Research Center June 2013

4 Major Findings The majority (61%) of active respondents state that outdoor recreation in Arkansas is very important. Health and wellness and To be with family/friends were the two reasons given most often (31% and 22% respectively) for participating in outdoor recreation activities in Arkansas. When Non-Active respondents were asked the reasons they do not visit parks or recreation areas, 44% cite health reasons/disability as their top reason. Only 5% of Active participants predict this as the reason that some people might not visit parks or recreation areas. Active respondents indicate that the top reason some people might not visit these areas is because they do not enjoy them or are not interested in this type of activity. Twenty-six percent (26%) of the Non-Active respondents cite this as the top reason they do not visit parks or recreation areas. Fifty-eight percent (58%) of active respondents participated in walking, jogging or hiking 10 or more times in the past 12 months. The Differential Ranking for "Walking, jogging or hiking" is one and half times larger than the differential ranking for the second most preferred activity of "Nature Viewing." Looking at the relative difference in quality points for the popularity ranking, Walking, jogging or hiking received one and a half times the number of quality points as Nature viewing. These differences give a measurement of preference intensity. A majority (59%) of active respondents indicate that they most often do activities in small groups as opposed to in large groups or as an individual. The public outdoor recreation area in Arkansas that respondents visited most often in the past 12 months was state parks. Water recreation activity areas were the next most often visited area. The top four initiatives that would encourage respondents to participate more actively in outdoor recreation activities are: o More outdoor facilities and opportunities close to where they live (66%) o More information about facilities and opportunities (61%) o Increased accessibility for persons with disabilities (54%) o Better security within facilities (50%) A majority of respondents cite the following as programs that should be a very important priority for state and local funding: o Recreational programs for children 12 years of age and under (67%) o Recreational programs for teens (65%) o Recreational programs for persons with disabilities (57%) o Health and fitness programs (54%) UALR/IOG Survey Research Center June 2013
