StephaneMallat,apioneerofwavelet theoryattheecolenormalesuperieur, presentsawhirlwindintroductionto hiswork,spanninginspirationsin neurobiology(onthenatureofbrain functions),machinelearning,and applicationstoimage,sound,andmusic processing.thatafternoon,simon Dixon,PresidentoftheSocietyforMusicInformationRetrievalandfacultyatQMUL followswithanoverviewofhisworkinmusicinformatics,includinghisseminalwork inbeattracking. FreshlyarrivedfromtheInternationalConferenceonNewInstrumentsforMusical Expression,thenexttwospeakersdelveintohighimpactmusictechnologies.Starting withnorbertschnelloftheinstitutderechercheetcoordinationacoustique/musique (IRCAM)describesinnovativeinterfacesthatlinkmovementtosound,including Mogees(interfacesthatturneverydayobjectssuchasaknifeandcuttingboardinto musicalinstruments)andcosima(softwarethatturnssmartphonesintocollaborative musicdmakingdevices).andrewmcphersonofqmulnextintroducedhismagnetic ResonatorPiano,anacousticgrandpianoaugmentedwithmagnetstoproduceinfinite sustainandcrescendofromsilence,andfinishesupwithhistouchkeysmultidtouch KeyboardKickstarterproject. Thesummerschool closedwithan informalperformance sessioninwhich participantscouldplay withtheinteraces introducedinschnell s talkaswellasthe MagneticResonator Piano,whichhadbeen setuponayamahac2 grandpianoprepared especiallyforthe event. Thespeakerswerecarefullyselectedfortheirabilitiestocommunicatetheirworkand passiontotheaudience,andtheymadeastrongimpactontheparticipants.ingeneral, thestudentsexpressedsurpriseatthequalityandexpertiseofthespeakers;they generallyfeltthattheywereexposedtoawidevarietyofbrilliantideas,manyfinding theideastobedirectlyrelevanttoandusefulfortheirownphdresearch.a questionnairewascirculatedtotheparticipants.18participantsresponded,andtheir detailedcommentscanbefoundinthesecondattachment.thusthisgoalwasachieved, Page9/10

Goal2:participants)will)be)able)to)network)across)DE)areas,)across)programmes,)and) across)institutions Byandlarge,themajorityofrespondentsfeltthattheopportunitytonetworkwiththe speakersandtomeeteachothertobeahighlightofthesummerschool.sothisgoal wasalsoachieved. Goal3:participants)will)gain)international)experience)not)only)through)contact)with)the) speakers,)but)also)through)the)summer)school)location)in)paris Manyparticipantstookadvantageofthe numerousactivitiesaroundparis announcedduringthesummerschool. TheseincludedtheBillViolaexhibitat thegrandpalais(acrosstheseinefrom thesummerschoolvenue,ulip), performancesatthemanifestemusic festivalatircam,architecturalsites suggestedbykilian(suchasthe PompidouCentrebyRenzoPianoand thenewfoundationlouisvuitton BuildingbyGehryPartners),andevents Figure17.AwallmuralneartheStravinskyFountainat thecentrepompidou atthelecentquatrenearthehostel. Anumberofinternationalstudents neededspecialvisapermissiontovisitfrance,whichaddedtotheirexpensesand preparationtime.but,overall,mostwerepleasedwiththesummerschoolvenuein Paris.So,thisaspectofthesummerschoolalsofulfilledtheintendedobjective.
