24 Lync Stress and Performance Tool configuration Performance testing with the Microsoft Lync Stress and Performance Tool provides a representation of the traffic generated from a client perspective. Testing simulates the interaction that Lync clients have with a Lync Server 2013 server. Lync client traffic is generated using one Lync Stress and Performance Tool server simulating 2500 users. These tests simulate the traffic experienced in a customer s production environment. The workload generated during each test run is used to determine if the solution is capable of supporting 2500 users across each of the system components. Each test run consists of a twelve-hour duration. Note The sizing tools used for Lync specify the total number of users and the percentage of the total number of users that are enabled for each workload. The Lync Stress and Performance Tool works in a different way. The Lync workload is assigned to a quantity of users. This can result in a total user count in the Lync Stress and Performance Tool being higher than the total number of users shown in the capacity sizing. The number of users configured for each workload is defined in tables in Appendix 3. The lines in the table with a label of match a Lync workload such as AV. The number of users configured for that workload can be determined by subtracting the LowIndex number from the Index number. Testing and results The HP Converged Systems RA for Microsoft Lync Server 2013 Mid Market (2500 User) solution is designed to support a set of users with a properly sized and tested infrastructure. Workload description The workload for the 2500 user RA is broadly categorized in a total of 4 test plans. The details of the test plans are listed below: users with 30% of users enable for Enterprise Voice (default value) users with 30% of users enable for Enterprise Voice (default value) and 82 Concurrent calls users with 60% of users enable for Enterprise Voice (default value) users with 60% of users enable for Enterprise Voice and 82 Concurrent calls Table 15. 31 Observations The results summary table shows the expected behavior for the solution servers when varying the workload across the 4 test iterations. Increasing the percentage of Enterprise Voice activity increased the CPU utilization and network traffic on front end server virtual machine. Table 20. The overall observation that we have made was that this configuration of servers and the network gear was able to support 2500 users with the heaviest workload that was tested. The heaviest workload that we tested resulted in the maximum front end server CPU utilization of the about 80% as shown below. All other solution components like memory and network were not utilized as much as the CPU therefor they were not the limiting resources. The front end server virtual machine experienced the highest load of all the servers in the solution and was therefore the bounding resource. Figure 22. Shows the CPU utilization of the workload 2.2(heaviest workload) from the front end server virtual machine. 31

32 Conclusion Deploying an enterprise ready Lync Server 2013 solution can be an involved and time consuming process. The goal of this white paper is to help simplify and expedite deployment of Microsoft Lync Server 2013 solutions. This white paper outlines the hardware necessary to support a virtualized Lync infrastructure to support 2500 Lync users with a mixture of Lync workloads that are similar to those used in a typical corporate Lync deployment. HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 servers with internal small form factor storage and Smart Array P420i controllers are used as the Hyper-V host servers to run the virtual machines that host the Lync Server 2013 roles. This white paper provides configuration details that cover the host and guest operating system, storage and network subsystem configurations, and Lync Server 2013 roles deployed to meet the solution requirements. Performance results from both the Microsoft Stress Test Tool runs showed that this solution meets the requirements for processor, memory, storage and networking. The test data presented in this reference architecture is used by HP to verify the accuracy of the results from the HP Planning Tool for Microsoft Lync Server Appendix 1 Bill of materials The BOMs shown below list the major server and storage hardware components needed for the recommended configurations; however this is not an exhaustive listing of all the necessary components needed to build the complete solutions.
