TABLE OF CONTENTS The "Webinar Proposal Packet" gives information and directions to help qualified instructor (s) interested in proposing an ASCE continuing education course. Please complete the required information, fill out the appropriate forms and submit the proposal by clicking on the Submit by button on Page 1. You may also the forms directly to to the attention of Donna Gumenuk. Enclosed in this package you will find the following information: 1. Background Information 2. Webinar Summary Information 3. Biographical Data Information 4. Background Questionnaire 5. PowerPoint Presentation Requirements
BACKGROUND INFORMATION ASCE Continuing Education conducts approximately 300 live, interactive web/ teleconference seminars on a wide variety of technical and management topics. These programs are state-of-the-practice and designed to transfer technical information that may be immediately applied on the job. Live web/teleconference seminars are typically one hour to one and a half hours in length and address a fairly specific topic. Live web seminars are delivered using the web and the telephone. Instructors present their material from their office by making an audio presentation over the phone while showing PowerPoint slides over the web. Participants log in and dial into the webinar and are able to ask questions during the program. Instructors also are able to conduct surveys to gage seminar participants interest in certain areas and to ask the participants questions. The frequency of our live web seminars has increased significantly due to member demand and we are constantly searching for qualified instructors to develop and teach new programs. Where do we get our instructors? Instructors come from the private sector, universities and Federal, State and local government. What web seminar topics will ASCE consider offering? ASCE will consider all timely, state-of-the-practice topics of value to practicing civil engineers. Keep in mind that your topic should be fairly specific so that it can be addressed in 60 or 90-minutes. How many instructors teach a web seminar? Most web seminars have one instructor; two instructors for one seminar is the maximum we are able to accommodate. When are the web seminars scheduled? Seminars are scheduled approximately 9 months in advance of the actual seminar date to allow sufficient lead time. ASCE s live web seminars are typically held Monday through Friday during the 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM eastern time frame. Web seminars may also be scheduled at 2:00 PM eastern time to accommodate ASCE members in different time zones, should the need arise.
WEBINAR SUMMARY INFORMATION This is REQUIRED INFORMATION for complete proposals. This information will be publicized to generate interest in your presentation, should the Committee accept your proposal. Proposed Title: A Flood Risk Assessment to Municipal Infrastructure due to Changing Climate: London (Ontario, Canada) City Case Study Webinar Brief Provide 3 4 sentences to explain the context and purpose of your presentation, what primarily will be discussed, and the intended outcome. Your brief should be between 600 to 1,000 characters. No more than 1,000 characters. Primary discussion topics should be listed in a separate section. Sample Brief As water supplies become more scarce and costly, it is necessary to consider non-traditional sources for household and commercial building irrigation. Many health and building departments are reluctant to consider these systems due to potential health concerns; yet diverting greywater to irrigate gardens and landscaping would benefit the public and the environment. This webinar will discuss greywater systems and strategies to further their use, while protecting public health and gaining acceptance. Your Brief Extreme rainfall events that are occurring more frequently as an effect of climate change and variability are causing increasing damages to municipal infrastructure. A methodology is presented to quantify the risk to municipal infrastructure from climate change-related flooding. The risk is measured using a combination of flow/frequency, stage/damage and damage/frequency curves. The measure of risk is termed the Risk Index and calculated for each infrastructure element within a municipality. The risk is aggregated and summed by spatial unit and presented in the form of risk tables and maps. The risk index takes into account both quantitative and qualitative information obtained from research and interviews with technical experts. The results from the application of the methodology to a municipality will lead to better policy and informed decision making.
Primary Discussion Topics List 3 5 core bulleted topics of discussion to highlight. Sample: State of practice governing greywater systems for irrigation Local impacts of climate change Flooding and municipal infrastruture Management of flood risk to municipal infrastructure Risk mapping for informed decision making Learning Objectives: Describe the learning objectives/outcomes An innovative methodology for flood risk assessment due to changing climate Downscaling climate change impacts to local scale An innovative methodology for integrated risk assessment
Benefits for Participants: Write seven benefits. - Find out latest... - Examine the possibilities... - Learn new solutions... - Determine precise... - Avoid costly errors... - Etc. Learn about new methods for climate change impact assessment on local scale. Find out how to integrate global and local climate information. Determine flood impacts to municipal infrastructure due to changing climate Examine various adaptation measures for reducing climate chnage caused flood impacts on municipal infrastructure Help in prioritizing implementation of climate change adaptation measures Determine locations with high level of vulnerability Plan the operation of the flood protection infrastructure Outline: Provide a seminar outline. 1. Introduction 2. Assessment of climate change impacts on flooding a. use of global climate data b. downscaling climate impacts using KnnCAD weather generator c. hydrologic modeling d. hydraulic modeling 3. Assessment of flood risk to municipal infrastructure a. risk index b. risk calculation c. spatial presentation of flood risk 4. City of London case study a. Thames river watershed b. climate modeling, downscaling, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling c. infrastructure data d. damage data e. risk index calculation f. risk index presentation g. climate change adaptation recommendations 5.
