SABBATICAL LEAVE PROPOSAL In this expandable box, clearly state the purpose(s) of the proposed sabbatical leave (in 200 words or less): I propose to research and write a short handbook/manual for students in Human Sexuality (PSYC 115), based on current human sexuality research. My reasons for undertaking this project are twofold: First, I have become the Psychology Department's lead full-time faculty in the teaching of Human Sexuality (PSYC 115). Although my area of emphasis, social psychology, overlaps human sexuality to a large extent, there are several areas of sexuality in which I can increase my knowledge. Second, in my examination of the human sexuality materials available to students and members of the general public, there appear to be either exhaustively comprehensive textbooks (which emphasize research, often at the cost of being less than interesting), or brief, popular-culture monographs (which emphasize interest over research). However, there are few short, interesting, researchbased books on human sexuality. Therefore, I propose to compile, read, summarize, and organize applicable scientific human sexuality research, and produce a draft of several chapters that eventually will become a short book on human sexuality that is both research-based and interesting. 3 Sabbatical Leave Application Objectives III. Identification of Objectives, Description of Proposed Activities & Documentation Objective #1: a. My objective: Compile and read applicable scientific research that relates to human sexuality. b. How I plan to accomplish my objective and anticipated outcome: The available literature in human sexuality tends to fall into two widely disparate types. The first type is textbooks that are exhaustively comprehensive, emphasizing research, but often at the cost of being less interesting and less readable than one would expect for a topic of inherent interest like human sexuality. The second type is brief, popular-culture monographs that tend to emphasize interest over research. There are few short, interesting, research-based books on the topic of human sexuality that I can use as a supplement to a traditional textbook and that students might use as a reference source during and after the course. Therefore, using available library resources, I will find, collect, and read scientific journal articles, human sexuality textbooks, and other sources on topics such as: the history of human sexual behavior and thought, biological and anatomical aspects of sex, selected cross-cultural examples of differences in human sexual behavior (as a way of highlighting American cultural views and behaviors of human sexuality), sexual norms and expectations, and intimate relationships. I will examine several of the areas included in the official course of record for the course, with an emphasis on more of the social psychological aspects of human sexuality. Although it is difficult to predict how many sources I will find under each general category (and the categories will evolve as sources are collected), I estimate that a minimum of 10 sources will be collected per topic. Typical journals might include, but are not necessarily limited to: Journal of Sex Research, Sex Roles, Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, and the Journal of Sexual Medicine. c. Documentation and estimation of time spent on my activity: Time for this objective will be related to locating appropriate materials and reviewing them. The documentation for this objective will be a log of hours and a comprehensive bibliography. I estimate that at least 140 hours will be spent on this activity. Page 3 of 5

4 Objective #2: a. My objective: Summarize and organize applicable scientific research mentioned in Objective #1 into a comprehensive manuscript outline. b. How I plan to accomplish my objective and anticipated outcome: I will summarize the scientific findings into an organized outline of biological, psychological, and social knowledge that is pertinent to human sexuality, and that connects the science with everyday human sexual life. As a general guideline, and to facilitate the manuscript's helpfulness to students in Human Sexuality (PSYC 115), then I will organize the outline around several of the general topics listed in the official course outline of record. Such topics might include but are not necessarily limited to: the history of human sexual behavior and thought, biological and anatomical aspects of sex, selected cross-cultural examples of differences in human sexual behavior (as a way of highlighting American cultural views and behaviors of human sexuality), sexual norms and expectations, and intimate relationships. c. Documentation and estimation of time spent on my activity: The documentation for this objective will be the outline of the manuscript and a log of hours. I estimate 140 hours will be spent on this activity. Objective #3: a. My objective: Produce a draft of several chapters that eventually will become a short book on human sexuality that is both research-based and interesting. b. How I plan to accomplish my objective and anticipated outcome: I will use the outline mentioned in Objective #2 to produce well-written prose that strives to be both informative as well as entertaining in voice. According to convention in psychological monographs, I will provide references to the resources at the end of the work in a references section. c. Documentation and estimation of time spent on my activity: It is unrealistic to expect to complete the entire manuscript during a single sabbatical semester; therefore, I anticipate producing three complete chapters, ready to share with students. The documentation for this objective will be a log of hours and drafts of at least three chapters. I estimate that at least 300 hours will be spent on this activity (see *Note above). Total Estimate of Hours for all objectives (minimum of 576 hours) = more than 580 hours IV. Explanation of Contribution to District A. Explanation of how my activities will contribute to my professional development: Through this project I will gain new expertise in several areas of research related to human sexuality, so that I may develop in the role of lead full-time faculty member teaching Human Sexuality (PSYC 115), a role that I assumed only one year ago. As well as gaining additional knowledge, through the proposed activities I will become a better Page 4 of 5

5 teacher by developing new ways of linking complex scientific findings to aspects of everyday human sexual life, and I will become a better lead instructor, who can offer guidance to other instructors teaching PSYC 115. B. Anticipated impact (if any) of my project(s) on: 1. Students - Students will benefit by the incorporation of additional research-based knowledge into the Human Sexuality (PSYC 115) course. Further, students will benefit in class because through preparing the manuscript I will develop new ways of linking complex scientific findings with aspects of everyday human sexual life. I will make the manuscript available to students in the course, to facilitate their understanding of the issues and concepts. Options for delivery might include electronic or bound versions (students would only be charged for reproduction costs). Further, the expertise that I gain through researching and writing the manuscript I will use to revamp the course outline of record for Human Sexuality (PSYC 115), resulting in a more interesting, engaging, but still rigorous curriculum, written with the community college student in mind. I believe this will potentially enhance student retention and success. 2. Department - The Psychology Department will benefit because of this project because the lead full-time faculty instructor in Human Sexuality (PSYC 115) will increase his expertise of the area. This course is a very popular and highly enrolled course (3 or 4 sections per semester, with typical enrollments of students for each section), and increasing my expertise serves the long-term excellence goals of the Department. Further, this project will provide me with greater expertise to mentor and assist other full-time and part-time instructors who are currently teaching the course and who might teach it in the future. Currently, the department has one or two part-time instructors who teach Human Sexuality (PSYC 115), depending upon the semester, and an additional full-time instructor who is interested in teaching the course. 3. College - The college benefits from this project because Human Sexuality (PSYC 115) is a general education course for students from across the campus. The knowledge base and applicability of the course to students' lives improves the college's reputation and standing among students, and serves to further programmatic and institutional learning outcomes. 4. Community - The community benefits from this project by virtue of having better educated, more researchinformed students who go out and become community members who are more knowledgeable and aware of the many aspects of human sexuality. Further, the result of this project will enhance student acceptance of diverse lifestyles within the community by making them better informed about these aspects of society and potentially dispelling some myths about human sexuality.
