Monitoring IBM WebSphere extreme Scale (WXS) Calls With dynatrace What is IBM WebSphere extreme Scale (WXS)? From IBM: WebSphere extreme Scale operates as an in-memory grid that dynamically processes, partitions, replicates, and manages application data and business logic across hundreds of servers. It provides transactional integrity and transparent fail-over to ensure high availability, high reliability, and consistent response times. WebSphere extreme Scale is an essential distributed caching platform from IBM for elastic scalability and the next-generation cloud environments. Elastic means the grid monitors and manages itself, allows scale-out and scale-in, and is self-healing by automatically recovering from failures. Scale-out allows memory capacity to be added while the grid is running, without requiring a restart. Conversely, scale-in allows on-the-fly removal of memory capacity. What do we want to monitor? The application server JVMs (in this case IBM WebSphere Commerce Server (WCS)) make calls out to WXS JVMs to access the data grid/cache. These calls impact the transaction response time (while usually by negligible amounts) and we want to monitor their response time contribution. If transaction slowness is due to the WXS servers, we can use dynatrace to identify the root cause by monitoring the transaction call stack and server resource utilization.
How do we monitor it? Environment Details: Web Startup method (Script, Console, Windows Service, etc) WCS (i.e. IBM WebSphere 7.0) Endeca WXS Database IBM IHS HTTP Server v7.0 (32 bit) Script IBM Websphere Application Server v7.0 Network Deployment Edition (32-bit JVM) Script Endeca Engine WXS IBM Websphere Extreme Scale 32-bit JVM Script Oracle dynatrace Web Server Agent dynatrace Java Agent dynatrace Host Agent dynatrace Java Agent dynatrace Host Agent In this example environment, only the WCS and WXS tiers are instrumented with dynatrace.
Out of the Box PurePath Transaction Flow After a web request enters the WCS JVM, calls are made out to the WXS JVMs. These calls are represented as 100% inter-tier time with 0% spent on the actual WXS JVM. This is inaccurate. Out of the Box PurePath Tree The PurePath tree shows that the calls from WCS to WXS use RMI. However, since the execution path is not instrumented, the call is represented as inter-tier time and there is no WXS call stack.
Instrumented PurePath Transaction Flow With proper Sensors in place on the WXS JVMs, we are able to see the amount of time spent inter-tier as well as the amount of time in methods executed on the WXS JVMs. Instrumented PurePath Tree The PurePath Tree shows the WCS JVM exit point which indicates an RMI call out to WXS. It also shows the WXS entry point on the other end of the RMI Tagging call. This entry point indicates how much time was spent in methods on the WXS JVM. IBM WXS RMI Call
In order to identify what methods require Sensor placement, load was put on the application and CPU samples were taken on the WCS and WXS JVMs simultaneously. Using the existing PurePath data, we know that the WCS exit point is on the Web Container thread and the WXS entry point is on the OGORB Thread Pool thread. WCS JVM CPU Sample As part of the web request (identified by the Web Container thread in the PurePath) the application makes a call from the com.*.*.services.impl.userserviceimpl.getuserfromcache method. This calls the com.ibm.ws.objectgrid API where the com.ibm.ws.objectgrid.client.orbclientcoremessagehandler.sendmessage method is eventually called. This method acts as the RMI initiator from WCS to WXS. Monitoring this method would serve as our PurePath exit point.
WXS JVM CPU Sample The WXS JVMs spawn multiple OGORB Thread Pool threads. Each of these threads waits to perform work initiated by RMI. When an RMI client listening thread receives a request, it is routed to one of the OGORB threads. In order to follow the call stack from WCS to WXS through RMI tagging, we must instrument the right method in this call stack. Based on the following with a bit of trial and error (nonproduction environment!) we are able to determine that the com.ibm.ws.objectgrid.shardimpl.processmessage is the RMI method that needs to be instrumented. The number of times the method was Active on this particular call stack compared to other methods The class is part of the com.ibm.ws.objectgrid package, which is what we re trying to monitor (IBM WebSphere extreme Scale object grid) The method is the first com.ibm.ws.objectgrid method invoked in the stack IBM WXS RMI Method Sensor Rules These Sensors can be placed on both the WCS and WXS JVM Agent Groups. Calls leaving WCS will be monitored with the sendmessage method and calls entering WXS will be monitored with the processmessage method. Child method calls from processmessage can be monitored with Auto Sensors on the WXS JVM. Note that each call from WCS to WXS will add 2 nodes to the PurePath. Depending on the number of calls per PurePath, it may be a good idea to set the Sensors to inactive on the WXS JVMs until WXS performance issues are noticed by long running WCS sendmessage methods.
Sample IBM WXS Monitoring Dashboard Using method Measures, we can monitor how long calls take on the WXS JVMs, the percentage of total PurePath time spent in WXS, and the number of WXS calls. The dynatrace Agent also collects resource utilization metrics about the WXS servers and JVM process.
