4 What to do now cont Maintain current grades/gpa. Keep current classes that you are registered for as colleges will see your current classes and a final transcript. Colleges can resend their offer of acceptance if grades drop or classes change.

6 Bright Futures Scholarship Funding only applies to schools only in Florida. There are 3 different types of scholarships Florida Academic Scholarship Florida Medallion Scholarship Gold Seal Vocational Scholarship Download Bright Futures Handbook Eligibility Requirements (see Chapter 1, page 3 of handbook) Award Amounts (see Chapter 2, page 4 of handbook)

7 Bright Futures Scholarship Cont When to Apply Seniors with a 2.75 GPA will be able to apply. Counselors will assist seniors in December by applying for scholarship at Lake Brantley in computer lab. Seniors will apply online and will be sent a password so they can update account information: Ensure college is updated in Spring so funding is sent to the correct school. Bright Futures sends funding directly to the school of record s financial aid office. Seniors will be notified in Spring as to what scholarship they may receive. Final notification will be sent to students in June/July. Seniors can check current Bright Futures Eligibility now online. Bright Futures Scholarship Eligibility Evaluation

8 Financial Aid Make sure to fill out the FAFSA in February 2015 https://fafsa.ed.gov/ Students may qualify for grants or student loan based on tax return/income Financial Aid Lake Brantley January 13 th Detailed information regarding FAFSA/Student Loans

10 College Applications State University System Matrix Major Deadline #1: College Applications University of Florida: November 1 st Florida State University: October 15 th Includes application, transcript, test scores, any other required information [essay, letters of recommendation, etc.] Out of state and In State schools and private schools will have different deadlines. Make sure to check the college/university individual website for information regarding deadlines.

12 College Applications Cont The Common Application and SendEDU Used at 540 colleges Big users for SHS students: U Michigan, Purdue, Ohio State and many selective private schools Electronic submission only Focus on asking for recommendations and sending transcript today [under My Colleges, Assign Recommenders ]

13 College Applications Cont When completing your Common App or SENDedu, invite your counselor to be a recommender KEY STEP FOR Common App! [This will your counselor to submit your school forms online.] THIS IS ALL YOU HAVE TO DO TO SEND A TRANSCRIPT TO ALL COMMON APP SCHOOLS. [Greatly simplified process!! It s FREE!!]

14 College Applications Cont Invite teacher[s] to write a recommendation for Common App This initiates process for teachers, who can submit letters online or on paper Tip: Speak with your teacher[s] before you invite them. Check to be sure you even need a letter! Check college website. There should be a reason you re sending letter[s]. Some colleges/scholarships do not require letters of recommendations. Be sure to ask teacher/counselor at least 3 weeks before any deadline.

15 College Application Process Begin to complete online apps Tip: Make copy of every app you send Arrange to send ACT/SAT scores [www.act.org or must send scores to every school to which you apply! IF you need teacher/counselor recommendations, ask NOW! Arrange to send electronic transcript with Ms. Mantel (Building 1, Guidance Office)
