Today is VET NURSES DAY The day we highlight the dedication and hard work by our amazing vet nurses

A day in the life of a vet nurse Clients mainly have interactions with nurses in the reception area however the majority of a nurse s job often remains unseen. Hayley at reception Veterinary nurses have a wide variety of roles including Receptionist Caring for sick animals in hospital Anaesthetic monitoring Administering mediations Laboratory technician running blood samples Assisting the Vet holding and reassuring an animal during examinations and procedures Preparing surgery instrument kits Cleaning and the all important. Giving those reassurance cuddles

The nurses day starts before the Hospital opens for business when the nurse checks each and every animal in the hospital, making sure they are comfortable, have fresh water, food and clean bedding. They attend to each animal s special needs and record each animal s progress. Caroline giving a boarder a smooch

Some animals are patients needing extra love and care, and lots of dedication from nurses. Other animals are boarders needing love, care, feeding, walking, grooming and playtime. Another group of animals is our wildlife with special needs, such as different types of cages, environments and particular diets. Hayley making sure Bugs is better Sam feeding 2-day-old kittens found abandoned Our nurses, as you can expect, are caring souls and often take home young kittens brought into the surgery, taking on the role of Mum, getting up in the middle of the night to feed and clean them.

Computers are turned on, phones turned over and the front door is open ready for business. When all the ward rounds are completed, patient procedures and surgeries for the day are started. The surgery nurse monitors each animal after the pre-med has been given (a pre-med is a small amount of medication given to a patient prior to surgery to help relax the animal, it also has an analgesic, pain relief effect). Ashleigh comforting Sylvester for his pre-med When the patient is ready for surgery, the surgery nurse comforts them by holding and talking to them while the pet is being anaesthetised. The nurse prepares the patient for surgery. This involves in most cases, clipping the surgery site. This is followed by a surgical scrub, which means giving a thorough wash to the site and applying antimicrobial solutions. The same nurse follows the patient into the theatre.

The nurse needs to open gloves, gown and instruments for the surgeon in a sterile manner once they have scrubbed and entered the theatre. Ashleigh preparing patient for an x-ray Throughout the surgery the nurse carefully monitors the patient s anaesthetic and assists the veterinarian. When the vet has almost completed the surgery, the next patient for surgery will be pre-medicated, allowing for a smooth transition between surgeries. Once the surgery is completed the patient is moved onto a heat pad in the treatment area for recovery. The nurse, if needed, gives an injection of pain relief and an antibiotic.

The nurses in the hospital area keep a close eye on the patient making sure he/she is feeling comfortable, is kept nice and warm on soft bedding with heat mats, given hugs and cuddles (which all the nurses love doing). Generally patients recover quickly and smoothly, sometimes trying to stand up within a few minutes! The treatment table and theatre then needs to be set up for the next patient and surgery and so it goes again until all of the surgeries are done for the day. Sam checking Lucy after her operation Vet nurses know it can be scary in a strange place like a hospital without family there. The nurse continues monitoring the patient for the rest of the day. This involves checking all their vital signs such as temperature etc; keeping them warm and making sure that our patient has everything they need to feel comfortable. The main ward nurse assists and monitors our patients during other procedures such as x-rays, ultrasounds, dentals, grooms and emergencies that present during the day.

Caroline checking Pip s teeth Often, being a busy hospital, scheduled surgeries may be delayed by emergencies or patients that need urgent attention. Just like a human hospital, the vets and nurses need to attend to the most critical patients first. All and all you can be assured that tender loving care is given to every pet throughout their time with us. And it wouldn t go as smoothly without our terrific team of Nurses
