12 Careers in Health Care Nursing Nurses graduating with a BSc in Nursing will provide holistic, nursing and practice to patients and their families. Contemporary nursing careers offer a wealth of opportunities to contribute to the health and wellbeing of society in primary, secondary and tertiary settings. Pharmacy Pharmacists are healthcare professionals who practice pharmacy, the field of health sciences focusing on the effect of medications and their safe use. Pharmacists undergo college-level education to understand biochemical mechanisms of action of drugs, drug uses and therapeutic roles, side effects, potential interactions, and monitoring parameters. Professional interpretation and communication of this specialized knowledge to patients, physicians, and other health care providers are functions which pharmacists provide, and are central to the provision of safe and effective drug therapy. Physiotherapy Physiotherapy or Physical Therapy, often abbreviated PT, is a health care profession. Physical therapy is concerned with identifying and maximizing quality of life and movement potential within the spheres of promotion, prevention, diagnosis, treatment/intervention, and rehabilitation. This encompasses physical, psychological, emotional, and social wellbeing. 10

13 Radiography & Medical Imaging A Radiographer & Radiologic Technologist, also known as Medical Imaging Specialist (MIS), performs imaging of the human body for diagnosis medical problems. Radiographers work in hospitals, clinics, and private practice. Although many graduates pursue a career in general radiography and computed tomography, opportunities exist to specialize in ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, mammography, management, research and in industry as medical applications' specialists. Health Emergency (Paramedic) Paramedics are an integral part of the health care system. They provide unscheduled health care for individuals experiencing a health emergency. Paramedics initiate care and determine appropriate referral of patients to enable continuing care needs. A paramedic is also required to work with other emergency services to respond to mass casualty incidents in a range of situations. Medical Services Graduates from the Medical Services Programs are prepared to work in a range of occupational fields in the medical and health care sector. The degree has five themes of study: Personal and professional development Population, society and health Fundamental knowledge of health science Applied practice & Research The Physiotherapy Degree is based on a fully integrated curriculum and includes interdisciplinary studies. In Year 1, the curriculum is structured around patient centred learning. Conditions for which people typically seek physiotherapy, provide the context for integrating learning about biomedical sciences and physiotherapy skills. In the later years of the course, the focus moves from campus based patient scenarios and observational visits, to learning in a clinical environment. Graduates develop a skill set and are well-equipped to continue learning. Physiotherapy Themes Bachelor of Physiotherapy curriculum encompasses five themes present longitudinally throughout the course and built on in a hierarchical manner in progressive units. Theme 1: Personal and professional development Theme 2: Population, society and health Theme 3: Fundamental knowledge of health science Theme 4: Applied practice Theme 5: Research 18

22 Bachelor of Radiography and Medical Imaging Radiographers are health professionals who work in collaboration with radiologists and other specialist medical practitioners to provide patients with a range of diagnostic examinations. Radiographers more specifically facilitate patient diagnosis and management through the creation of medical images using a variety of medical imaging modalities including traditional x-ray radiographic imaging; digital fluoroscopy and digital vascular imaging; computed tomography, mammography, bone mineral densitometry, medical ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging. Radiographers play a pivotal role in selecting and implementing the most appropriate examination protocols which will answer the clinical questions. This program provides a professional education in general radiography, computed tomography, general medical ultrasound, digital vascular imaging and magnetic resonance imaging to facilitate entry into the radiography profession. Throughout the course, the physical and biomedical sciences are closely integrated with radiographic and medical imaging science and methods. Students will develop an understanding of scientific research in general and its application within radiographic practice. Under supervision, students will develop a range of professional skills in relation to the assessment and management of patients and implement radiographic and medical imaging techniques from an evidence based perspective. In final year, students will extend their radiographic knowledge into magnetic resonance imaging, pediatric imaging, digital subtraction angiography, functional imaging and bone mineral densitometry. Study Themes The units of study illustrated on the Course Map have been organized within the following study themes: 1. Enabling physical and biological sciences 2. Radiographic imaging science and methods 3. Medical imaging science and methods 4. Professional skills and clinical practice 20

The second year aims to provide students with the adequate preparatory coursework to enter the professional phase of the Degree. All units in first year provide an introduction to the generic competencies expected of university studies, eg. accessing information, critical analysis and essay preparation, etc. In year one, students will also be introduced to biomedical sciences, social sciences, human development and biological concepts that underpin clinical paramedic practice. The third year is the first of the two-year professional phase. Students study concepts of professionalism and core clinical skills, including clinical problem-solving and decision-making. In this year students will begin to explore common emergency medical conditions and conditions related to trauma. In the fourth year students study the paramedic management of patients with conditions affecting mental health and health conditions at various life stages. Students begin to explore the concepts of leadership and clinical mentoring, research and evaluation, and the broader scope of emergency preparedness and multi-casualty situations. A Thematic Approach There are five themes within the BEH(P) Degree which provide a continuity of approach across units and serve to link these units to professional practice. They are the following: Theme 1: Personal and Professional Development Theme 2: Population Health and Society Theme 3: Foundations of the Paramedic Clinician Theme 4: Community-based Emergency Health (CBEH) Theme 5: Science, Knowledge and Evidence 22
