1 Research and Applicatoin of Service-Oriented Scholar Cloud Platform *1, 2 Liu Hai, 1 He Chaobo, *1 Tang Yong, 1 Huang ShiPing *1 School of Computer, South China Normal University,Guangzhou, P.R.China 2 School of Mathematical Science,South China Normal University,Guangzhou, P.R.China Abstract This paper presents the requirement,chanllage and architecture for service-oriented scholar information service in cloud computing environment.in particular,we propose ScholarCloud platform for scholar information service,and give innovative example about software technology to build scholar information application within ScholarCloud Environment. The result shows service-oriented ScholarCloud platform has potential to help scholar individual,academic team or institute to build scholar information spaces. 1. Introduction Keywords: Cloud Computing,information service,scholar information service Cloud computing introduces a novel computing paradigm that provides on-demand computational capacity as services,it is a set of network enabled services,providing scalable,qos guaranteed,normally personalized,inexpensive computing infrastructures,and Cloud computing has been rapidly emerging as a new paradigm for delivering computing as a utility [1]. Although cloud computing is very charming and interesting,cloud technology is currently still in the development phase.exsiting Well-known examples include commercial products like Amazon EC2[2], Google AppEngine [3], Microsoft Azure[4].Based on common definition for Cloud and its services, existing clouds can be categorized into three classes: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Software as a Service (SaaS), and Platform as a Service (PaaS), infrastructure as a service solutions deliver IT infrastructure based on virtual or physical resources as a commodity to customers,platform as a service solutions provide an application or development platform in which users can create their own application that will run on the cloud,software as a service solutions are at the top end of the cloud computing stack and they provide end users with an integrated service comprising hardware,development platforms,and applications.cloud computing application platform have come into being in several application environment[5][6]. Buyya et al[7] [8]make an comparison of several representative cloud platforms from several aspect: semantic analysis[9][10], geographic Information System[11],biological[12][13] and business application. Wang[14] establish Cumulus by integration of existing grid infrastructure for data center through the use of cloud technology,watson[15] design CARMEN,which is a generic e- science platform "in the cloud" that enables data sharing, integration and analysis for neuroscientists.ding[16] discusses the search engine model in cloud computing,chen[17] research the secure data storage strategy in cloud computing. Like other areas of information systems,scholar information services are becoming more and more important,arnetminer has been in operation on internet since 2006,they provide information services such as expertise search, citation tracing analysis, topical graph search, and topic browser,that helps people to find and share information in academic community[18], this platform does a lot for professional and technical personnel owning to their focus on academic network mining. In order to encourage communication between scholars and facilitate management of academic information and academic relations, Li[19] built Scholar-Oriented Social Network Cloud (SOSN) ontology, which is an academic information centric social network ontology,however,in practice,scholars have great demand to create a personal home page to show his/her academic achievements,to store their mass resources in virtual storage space.there are needs to have tools to collaborate research work,share research document among research team members.there are also have great demands to construct information system,such as advisor recommend system used to help candidate to learn more about advisor in some Journal of Convergence Information Technology(JCIT) Volume7, Number5, March 2012 doi: /jcit.vol7.issue

2 institute, scientific performance evaluation system used to calculate research result annually et al for academic institute.although there are exciting development needs in scholar information system and lot of energy and financial resources have being put in force,scholar information service is still on the way due to lack of special platform or lack of technical support. From advantages provided by cloud computing, there are great needs for us to implement scholar information service platform(www.scholat.com),which is named ScholarCloud.This platform aims to take away development and maintenance burden from scholar,academic research team,academic institute in building their own scholar information platform.like other cloud platform,scholarcould provides global platforms which can be new tools and applications to improve scholar information service features.the ScholarCloud project s main research direction is to use ScholarCloud to develop web-based scholar information services for individual,research commuty and institutes,to provide academic information service spaces and collaboration tools,and to find academic relations and mine potential academic community in ScholarCloud. This paper will present our service-oriented cloud computing platform SchoarCloud.It is intended to demonstrate idea of ScholarCloud s flexible design,implementation and services.this paper is organized as follows.section 1 presents related work of cloud computing, section 2 describe the infracture and webservices provided by ScholarCloud.section 3 illustarte our service-oriented application on SchoarCloud platform.finally section 4 will conclude this paper. 2. Infrastructure of of ScholarCloud 2.1 Overview of scholar information service Scholar information services are a very complex system, On the one side,it can be seen from the static aspect,service platform should provide spaces not only for scholar s basic information,such as job,position,degree;but also for scholar s academic information,such as paper,project,publication et al,those information construct scholar s individual academic space.it can also be seen from the dynamic aspect,service platform should provide scholars with collaboration tools to make academic research easy and provide research team space to carry out project et al, those information construct scholar s collaboration space.on the other side,service platform should support both individual scholars,research team and academic institute to meet their own services needs.as for scholar, one needs to build academic information space, to create personal home page to show academic achievement,further may need to create research team to better organize exchange of academic work; for accademic institutes or schools, there are needs to use scholars academic space to customize service-oriented information system convinently and exlasly,such as advisor information system,and scientific performance appraisal system.figure 1 shows overview of needs for scholar information service. Figure 1 Overview of Needs for Scholar Information Services As we know,such information systems have different implementation method by mordent technology,due to most of scholars have no knowledge of,expertise in,or control over IT technology to support their needs,academic institution developers are always required to make large capital outlays in hardware and software infrastructures to deploy their services or human expense to operate it,so it has some difficulty in carrying out scholar information service by their own.to solve these problems, we use the cloud platform to study the achievement of scholar information services. 334

3 2.2 Instracture of scholar information service Cloud Could computing gives us a new direction to implement scholar information services,next,we will show the high level overview of service-oriented ScholarCloud(see figure 2),according to cloud computing protocol stack,scholarcloud divides scholar information services cloud platform into three layer. High Level Service-oriented ScholarCloud Platform Architecture At IaaS layer,we provide scholar/academic institute cloud resources,such as storage device,physical hosts or virtual machines.the main goal is to provide a stable and reliable storage space for scholar academic information.the fundamental issues such as provisioning of hosts to virtual machines based on user requests, managing application execution, and dynamic monitoring are handled by this layer.in server virtulization layer, we use KVM(Kernel-based Virtual Machine) technology to implement virtual host servers such that different scholar information service platform and dynamic resource pool(such as CPU,memory) can be centrally managed and allocated according to different scholar information services resources and operating system needs to maintain continuous optimization and high availability status for scholar information services.at storage virtualization layer,we integrate different storage devices as a whole,and meet each application needs accordingly.for construct scholar information data center,hbase can help us to implement HDFS[20] (Hadoop Distributed File System,HDFS) to support mass scholar information storage and access. At PaaS layer,scholar information services cloud provide several cloud services,scholarcloud is implemented at next level by programmatically extending the core functionalities needed by scholar information service,scholarcloud provides novel support for modeling and simulation of virtualized cloud-based academic data center environments,such as web service for individual scholar space,research community space,scholar search engine,schoar relation mining,academic research collaboration,function for academic storage et al.scholarcloud provides an general webservice interface to implement above functions for scholar information services,in the next section,we will elaborate it. The top-most layer in ScholarCloud stack is for scholar and academic institute to expose configuration related their special functionalities for hosts (number of machines, their specification and so on),applications (number of tasks and their requirements),and broker scheduling policies.for ScholarCloud users,they can generate a mix of scholar information service request 335

4 distributions,academic special application configurations within our ScholarCloud using webservices provided by ScholarCloud or use directly the software within ScholarCloud to complete their tack.. It is worth mention,like other cloud computing platform,we also need to consider the QoS negotiation, admission control,monitoring and execution management, and so on.but we will not consider those here. 2.3 Webservice-oriented architure of scholar information service (1) Needs for scholar information service cloud Figure 3. Scholar information service provided by ScholarCloud 3.1 Development process for use ScholarCloud Here we will give some examples to show how to use ScholarCloud platform to develop an scholar information service.first of all,we illustrate develop process to implement scholar information service. (1) In the web services world, Representational State Transfer (REST) is a key design idiom that embraces a stateless client-server architecture in which the web services are viewed as resources and can be identified by their URLs.web service clients that want to use these resources access a particular 336

5 representation by transferring application content using a small globally defined set of remote methods that describe the action to be performed on the resource. Within ScholarCloud,we use REST to provide webservices for individual scholar service,reasearch team information service,and academic institute information service(see figure 4).We use webservices privided by PaaS of ScholarCloud to get scholar personal infomation and academic inforrmtion.we develop webservice using REST technology,in which all the webservice are privide by a URL.Give an schoar account,scholarcloud webservice platform provides all information from ScholarCloud. (2) Could computing programmers use webservice compostion method or construct a work flow to fulfill special task. Developers can use technologies such as Asynchronous JavaScript with XML (AJAX) and toolkits such as Direct Web Remoting (DWR) to consume the services which can be exposed with XML and consumed by ASP,JSP pages without significantly refactoring the existing web site architecture in web applications. 3.2 Examples of scholar information service cloud application Example 1(ScholarCloud as IaaS and PaaS).Due to technical, financial and management issues, information about advisor recommend system is often tend to lag behind,here we will show how to use ScholarCloud to overcome those difficultity,we provide an infracture and platform for a university to build their advisor recommend system.first,all advisors register on ScholarCould platform,and then invoke individual scholar information services to establish their basic personal information space(see figure 5a);Second,academic institute manager will call institute scholar information services to construct their advisor recommending system by service composition(see figure 5b),the advisor s name,position,degree,picture in figure 5b is get by calling webservice provided by ScholarCloud,the function loaduserinfo and showuserinfo is listed in client program to implement advisors recommending system for school of computer in South China Normal university. function loaduserinfo(account){ var url = "http://www.scholat.com/rest/juserprofile/"+account+"/test"; $.ajax({ url: url, async:false, datatype: 'jsonp', data: '', jsonp: 'callback', success: showuserinfo, error: function(){ alert("delay of webservice!"); }, timeout: 3000 }); } function showuserinfo(data){ var img=data.userpictureurl; if(img==null img=="") img="pics/nopicture.gif"; var straccount= new Array(); straccount=img.split("/"); $("#divpic"+straccount[1]).html('<img src="http://www.scholat.com/'+img+'" alt="the photo is provided by ScholarCloud">'); } Figure 5a. Scholar relationship is very complex and important for academic research work,in platform of ScholarCloud,we can use webservices software to find all possible relationship about each scholar,figure 6 shows the author s scholar relationship by using mining scholar relationship software. 4. Scholar Relationship Graph Provided by ScholarCloud s Webservices In this paper,we introduce ScholarCloud s architecture and applications in scholar information service project.scholarcould can not only help people who what to build scholar information space for individual scholar,but also can help to construct academic team space for research community,furthermore it can provide academic institute an significantly easy way to build service-oriented application in cloud computing environment. Our future work consists of providing the evaluation of ScholarCloud system designs and going on theory research on scholar relationship. 5.
