transforming lives Teensavers offers residential and outpatient programs for adolescents with substance abuse, emotional and behavioral issues. For more than 30 years, we have provided a safe, therapeutic and educational home environment that combines a unique, five-phased approach with personalized treatment plans to transform the lives of teens and their families. 3 Our mission is to empower teens and transform lives. Teensavers has had great success over the past three decades in transforming the lives of teens with substance abuse, emotional and behavioral issues. Our mission is to develop healthy, positive, emotionally stable and self-sufficient teens who are able to reintegrate into the family unit and fulfill their true potential in society. Our residential and outpatient programs combine a proven, five-phased approach with personalized treatment plans, and deliver the most comprehensive, effective therapy available. Our In-Residence Program provides teens with a safe home environment and 24/7 care administered by licensed and certified counseling professionals, as well as psychiatrists and psychologists who are on call around the clock. Regardless of the severity of the problem, our experienced staff knows how to work with teenagers and their families to achieve the best results. Every child is unique, so his or her treatment plan should be, also. At Teensavers, we begin by assessing the problem and determining the underlying causes. Then we create a personalized roadmap that guides the child through treatment and down the path to self-sufficiency. We also work with those close to the teen to establish what issues within the family unit must be addressed to facilitate successful treatment. Parents and guardians are encouraged to take an active role in the recovery process and are updated on their child s progress on a weekly basis. Even after the teen has completed in-residence treatment, we provide continuing care to help minimize the chance of relapse. We perform a follow-up assessment to identify any lingering issues and then determine which method of continuing care should be used, whether it be one-on-one counseling, family or group therapy. Throughout treatment and into the continuing care stage, our exclusive Lifespark Process helps teens recapture the dreams they once had so that when they leave our program, they have a clear understanding of their life s passion. What makes us different? Quality of care ranked in the top 1 percent in the U.S. by CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities), a non-profit organization providing quality of care oversight based on a stringent set of standards Teensavers averages an percent success rate when the parent and child follow through with our treatment plan Over 30 years of experience in successfully treating adolescent substance abuse, emotional and behavioral issues A variety of treatment alternatives used to create personalized treatment plans that focus on the root cause of the problem An In-Residence Program that provides a safe, home environment A personalized behavior roadmap for every child A staff-to-child ratio that results in a high degree of personalized attention for every child Individual and group therapy sessions to provide needed insight and support A follow-up assessment to determine what type of continuing care is needed Several continuing care options that help minimize the chance of relapse Teen_Brochure_v11.indd 1 teensavers.com 1 8/26/09 9:51:42 AM

A unique, five-phased treatment program At Teensavers, we agree with the position of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) that the best treatment programs for substance abuse, emotional and behavioral issues provide a combination of various therapies and other services to meet the unique needs of every teen. We utilize a five-phased approach that has been proven to greatly increase success rates and lessen the chance of relapse. 1 Assessment, Intake 2 In-Residence 3 and Intervention Detoxification and Stabilization In-Residence or Day Treatment Program The purpose of this phase is to determine the type and severity of the problem your child is facing. Once the assessment is complete, we prescribe a personalized treatment plan for your teen that includes the methods of therapy needed. If your teen is resistant to the idea of being treated, Teensavers provides a non-threatening intervention process led by a team of experts who can bring your child to the self-realization that help is needed. In our experience, intervention results in the teen voluntarily entering the program 96 percent of the time. If needed, Teensavers can provide transportation services to our facilities. If your teen has a serious addiction problem, he or she will enter Phase Two of treatment, during which Teensavers will provide detoxification under the supervision of medical personnel. To ease the process, we utilize medications that were developed to eliminate cravings for certain substances, which dramatically shortens the detoxification period, making it, on average, a threeto five-day process. Once your teen completes this phase, he or she will enter Phase Three of the personalized treatment plan. During this phase, our emphasis is on utilizing the necessary psychological treatment alternatives that resolve the problem troubling your teen. Treatment is provided in both individual and group therapy sessions. In addition, community, exercise and academic activities reinforce group involvement and supplement therapy. You will receive a weekly report on the progress of your child and will be encouraged to attend a family group therapy session once a week. This phase of treatment typically lasts days. 2 teensavers.com Teen_Brochure_v11.indd 2 8/26/09 9:51:44 AM

The five-phased treatment approach is unique to Teensavers. We understand that every child is different and that more than one form of therapy is needed to address your teen s specific issues. 4 Outpatient 5 Continuing Care The Lifespark Process Phase Four begins once your teen is released from the Teensavers In-Residence Program. It is highly recommended that treatment continue for another 30 to 90 days on an outpatient basis to reinforce the tools acquired during the previous phases of treatment. This outpatient treatment may combine individual, group and family therapy sessions held one to five days per week, depending on the situation. Your teen may also attend family, peer and community support groups to gain a strong network of people who will encourage continuous improvement. The Lifespark Process begins the first day a teen enters our In-Residence Program and extends throughout treatment and into the continuing care stage. Teensavers founder Tim Chapman developed the process to assist teens in recapturing the dreams they once had. From the time he or she is admitted into Teensavers, your child will be guided by a personal counselor to determine what dreams and goals may have been forgotten or postponed by life events, behavioral issues or substance abuse. Through the Lifespark Process, we help identify a potential career path and what roadblocks stand in the way of achieving life goals. From day one teens are engaged in identifying and recapturing their Lifespark. Our knowledgeable, compassionate staff encourages and reinforces the process throughout treatment, so that when teens leave our program, they have a clear understanding of their life s passion. Teen_Brochure_v11.indd 3 8/26/09 9:51:47 AM

A personalized approach to treatment Teensavers understands that every teen s situation is different and every teen should, therefore, receive personalized treatment for whatever problem he or she is facing. Unlike some programs that subscribe to a single treatment approach or believe that a substance abuse, emotional or behavioral problem can be solved by therapies more akin to a spa than a treatment facility, Teensavers offers a five-phased approach that uses a variety of treatment options specifically tailored to your teen s unique needs. We understand the consequences created by unresolved childhood issues and the effect they can have on your teen reaching selfactualization. The goal of our program is to make a lasting, positive difference in a child s behavior, emotional stability and attitude. We accomplish this by combining our 30- to 90-day In-Residence Program, personalized for your teen, with at least 90 days of continuing care. Teen_Brochure_v11.indd 4 8/26/09 9:51:51 AM

A safe, comfortable home environment When you entrust your child to the Teensavers In-Residence Program, you will have the peace of mind of knowing that your child is residing in a safe, residential setting where he or she is receiving personalized, compassionate support. Each Teensavers residence is safe, secure and beautiful, and parents have the option of placing their child in a private or semi-private room. Room placement is based on the teen s compatibility with other teens in the residence, which is determined by the initial assessment and the level of care required. Community activities, exercise programs and academic studies will complement your child s comprehensive, personalized treatment plan. All academic credits your child earns can be transferred back to any academic institution with no reference to treatment or rehab. Teensavers is a California State Licensed Residential Treatment Program and is rated in the top 1 percent in the U.S. in terms of quality of care by CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Residential Facilities). Teensavers is ranked in the top 1 percent in the nation for quality of care and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Residential Treatment Facilities (CARF). teensavers.com 5 Teen_Brochure_v11.indd 5 8/26/09 9:52:00 AM

The focus in the continuing care phase is on helping teens develop the self-discipline and coping skills they need to make the right decisions and resist falling back into their old pattern. Teen_Brochure_v11.indd 6 8/26/09 9:52:03 AM

The need for continuing care Although in-residence treatment is effective and critical to absolving teen substance abuse, emotional and behavioral issues, continuing care is essential to minimizing the chance of relapse after treatment. Continuing care therapies focus on teaching teens how to cope when they are thrust back into the same social environment that initially contributed to their need for treatment. The focus is on helping teens develop the coping and leadership skills and self-discipline they need to make the right decisions and resist falling back into their old pattern, while building character and learning to be self-sufficient. Teensavers believes that the most effective treatment approach consists of a 30- to 90-day in-residence program combined with outpatient continuing care for at least another 90 days. Continuing care will help your teen reintegrate into society and the family unit by: Enabling open, respectful communication Developing a healthy mental attitude, trust and cooperation Increasing self-esteem and coping skills Teaching the skills needed to make healthy choices and develop healthy relationships Establishing a clear vision of future goals Developing a self-motivated teen After your child completes in-residence treatment, we will perform a follow-up assessment to identify any lingering emotional, behavioral or psychological issues and determine which methods of continuing care will be effective for your teen. Teensavers continuing care options include: Effective Support Systems encourage reintegration into a different social environment than the one that initially contributed to your teen s substance abuse problem Family support groups Peer support groups Community support groups Individual, Group and Family Therapy Sessions focus on resolving lingering emotional and behavioral issues The Lifespark Process We consider this program to be part of the continuing care stage because it extends past residential treatment. The insight teens gain from this process beginning on the first day of treatment helps them establish goals for the future and provides the hope needed to achieve them. teensavers.com 7 Teen_Brochure_v11.indd 7 8/26/09 9:52:04 AM

Questions to ask treatment facilities If you are thinking of placing your teen in an in-residence treatment program, we suggest contacting at least three facilities and asking the following questions to determine whether your teen will receive the personalized care he or she needs: Do you perform assessments to identify my child s problems and their severity? Who performs these assessments? Besides substance abuse, do you treat co-occurring emotional and behavioral issues? Do you perform interventions if my child is resistant to the idea of being treated? Do you provide transportation services if my child is resistant to treatment? Do you develop a personalized treatment plan for each child? How many psychological treatment alternatives do you utilize? Does the treatment program meet or exceed the standards set by NIDA? If my teen is severely addicted, do you have in-residence detox facilities that are under medical supervision? What medications do you use to reduce withdrawal and physical discomfort? What is your success rate in resolving teenage substance abuse, emotional and behavioral issues? Are you CARF accredited? What type of continuing care programs do you offer? How long do they last? What is the maximum number of teens housed in your facility at one time? What is your staff-to-child ratio? Will I participate in the treatment of my child through group sessions? What expenses are involved in the treatment of my child? Are treatment expenses covered by insurance? Over the course of 30 years, Teensavers has developed some of the most successful programs and therapies in the nation and has earned the trust of families, the juvenile justice system, schools, community organizations and insurance companies. We firmly believe that no single therapeutic approach will cure every adolescent problem because every child is different and each problem is compounded by other medical, emotional and behavioral issues that must be addressed with various forms of therapy. Our five-phased approach is one of the most comprehensive in the country. Its success rate and quality of care are among the highest in the nation. When you place your child in the care of the compassionate staff at Teensavers, you can rest assured that he or she is receiving the best treatment available.
